I mean, it was clear at that time that if someone really believe in creationism, his intelligence might not be enough to eat with a fork, so clearly not enough to use a computer and read slashdot.

It's frightenning to see how, in 4 years, the creationism vs evolution has become, in both parts, an accepted "debat".

I simply don't see anything common between the two (but it might be that the pictures are taken in very different situations). As "Jari" doesn't appear anywhere on PHP list or whatever, it could lead to confusion.

  11. Re:From IRC, the reason: on Lead PHP Developer Quits · · Score: 1

Hm, I'm highly in doubt about this.

The php developper is Jani Taskinen : http://photos.derickrethans.nl/album/album02/Jani. sized.jpg
The UN peace keeper, also computer scientist, seems to be Jari Taskinen :
    http://users.tkk.fi/~jtaskine/
    http://users.tkk.fi/~jtaskine/kosovo/2004_10_05/An other_day_in_Paradise/images/159-5964_IMG.JPG

It's Jani vs Jari. It seems that they are two different people so it's highly plausible that someone saw this on the web (when looking for "Jani Taskinen" on Google, "Jari Taskinen" is automatically proposed) and did a fake log or a steal the nickname on IRC.

Well, perhaps the real PHP dev Jani was also part of the army. But it seems too much of a coincidence to me.

So, unless more proof is showed, I consider this IRC log as a fake intended to bring the Israel/Lebanon troll on /. (sadly one of those trolls who is played with guns instead of puns) and under the spotlights of the web => digg and site like. This is a very common practice.

  14. interesting picture on World's Largest Pyramid Discovered in Bosnia? · · Score: 1

    http://www.bosnianpyramid.com/index_files/image490 1.jpg is interesting.

You can see that only two faces of the pyramid remain. But I must admit that by seeing this map, I would think "it looks like a pyramid with a collapsed part".

We also learn that the pyramid is 300m high ! This is huge !

Pictures of the stairs are also astonishing.
    http://www.bosnianpyramid.com/Archive_files/240420 06.html

Now, the strange things are :
    - not a lot of pictures. The most used picture is a 1950's postal card. Why ? (it could be simply bad communication but we always have to be careful with pictures, remember the martian face).
    - If the pictures are real, it must be really easy to have a proof. If the stair is a real stair, well, there is few doubt about it.

Both part being equals, the probable story is that we have a semi-natural pyramid. A natural hill with some human constructions to make it more "pyramid".

    But, in this case :

    - Why nobody ever saw it ? Why is there no legend ? No other trace of a civilization ? No artifact ?
    - How can the global form of the pyramid in a such good state after years of erosion ? This is very strange that the good sides are on the river side ! 10000 years ago, the river was probably higher. In fact, the pyramid itself was probably done by the river.

The weakest point is certainly this river. Without the river, I would have say "why not ?". But if you look at the map, you will immediatly understand that "I looks like but it's not possible".

  16. My theory : gaming on Do Kids Still Program? · · Score: 1

I agree with that and my theory is only about gaming.

When we was young, we were attracted a lot by computers because we knew we could play games on it.

But, at this time, games were not so easy to have (no internet) and were not always running on your system and, also, were less polished, less complex.

In order to play games, we had to understand the system, type commands (even without understanding them), wait patiently for the game to load itself, ...

Some of us had perhaps hundred games on floppy disk, but we were always looking for more. Eventually, we would found some BASIC manual with code of games as examples. And patiently copying all the code without understanding it in order to play the game. The game itself were not so different than commercial games.

My personnal experience is the following : in order to play quickly one of my hundred floppy disk, I programmed my first QuickBasic application to have a menu displayed on my DOS screen. I also discovered "Gorillaz", in DOS 5.0, and wanted to have bigger explosion. I tried (with success) to understand the code of the game. (but I didn't understand why I had to "compile & run" in order to play... Well, I did it without further question.

I also had a game that would not launch itself if you have less than 4 Mo of RAM. As I wanted to play it anyway, I read the whole DOS 5.0 book and discovered that you can fool the system by carefully editing some autoexec.bat, system.ini, etc.... Indeed, the system would be very unstable, Windows 3.1 would not start but at least I could play. It tooks me two or three major crashes (and computer back to store with my father not very happy) to find the suitable change.

In conclusion, I wanted to play game and I discovered that hacking the system in order to play the game was more amusing than the game itself !
A lot of my geek friends followed the same way.

In today's computer, you simply have to click on a button to play the game. More, games are so complex and so polished that a litle self-written game is nothing but crap. Try to show "gorillaz" or "nibbles" to a young WoW player ....

I don't think that they are dumber than us. They just have less opportunities to discover how hacking and programming is cool.
