There at the end..."So, I have seen the problem." You described a virtually computer illiterate person who doesn't know how to enter a web address into an address bar, and in say that I have the same problem she has.
Well fine, next time I won't include funny anecdotes. I found the way she described it to be humorous. Apparently, you like to take things personally, so it was insulting. My intent was not to be a douchebag, but yours was in all your responses.
And yes, my advice actually IS helpful and relevant. I've seen many things happen to other people, the least of which is AJAX-heavy sites not loading, due to Firefox Profile corruption. Happened a lot during 2.0, and can carry over to 3.0 if the profile isn't fixed properly. But apparently it's just half-assed advice and I don't know anything. Just because you don't like the sound of advice doesn't mean it's worthless. And didn't have anything to do with your post? It had EVERYTHING to do with your post. I offered advice and a possible solution to a problem that didn't involve switching browsers. But no, you've already gotten it through your head, "It can't be my fault, it can't be malware (ooh, there's another thing it could be, but I guess I'm a douchebag for suggesting it!), it can't be any kind of corruption on my box, it MUST be MOZILLA's fault. Maybe Opera will be better. Better ask Slashdot instead of spending 10 seconds downloading it and trying myself! I couldn't be more lazy!"
You sound like a cripple just fallen out of his chair. I offer my hand, and you snarl and say "I DON'T NEED HELP FROM PEOPLE WHO CAN WALK." In the end, you're the douchebag who can't walk, had to suffer to get back into the chair, and I'm confused as to why you'd feel that way.
Wow, did you bookmark my response and decide to check up on it later, just in case I'd actually said something? What a tool.
But sure, I'll admit that yes, Science is "unit agnostic" (interesting term). But that doesn't stop SI from being the most widely used system in the world, as well as the system used almost exclusively in scientific matters. I don't really see what you're arguing here. There's nothing stopping you from using Imperial units in science (except perhaps getting into a reputable journal), but nobody else does, and you'll certainly get a lot of strange looks and questions from anyone reading your paper.
What does language standardization have to do with weights and measures standardization and science? You're just bringing that up to try and draw an analogy between the two, completely ignoring the differences so you can make your point.
And, are you a troll? Funny how you take something subjective with a fuzzy definition as part of "the bet". Sounds real serious and professional.
tl;dr, fsck off. You're arguing from a huge place of weakness, if you're even arguing at all. It sure looks like you're just rambling on about badly formed analogies and irrelevant knowledge, hoping it all falls together into something coherent.
Fuck you, buddy. My post was intended to be helpful. I was never an asshole at all. You're just projecting your own values onto my post, because you're frustrated. Being on Slashdot I (incorrectly) assumed you wanted more ideas to help troubleshoot the problem. I let you know that it's been working fine for me in firefox. That should be a pretty clear indicator it's on your end. Yes, many people may have this problem, and as I said in my post, my own mother has it when she uses GMail. But no, instead of thanking someone who offers help (and let me tell you this, since you insist on it - it loads IDENTICALLY WELL in Opera and Firefox - in other words, it loads just fine) you decide to go on a hissy-fit because you THOUGHT I was being an asshole. Grow up, take a deep breath, and try to imagine that people just might be trying to genuinely help you instead of going "HA HA, GMAIL SUCKS FOR YOU. GET A NEW COMPUTER, FAGGOT". Seriously. If you don't like people with this supposed "know-it-all attitude" (read: projection), you'd better get the hell off of Slashdot.
Am I the only one who thinks of this picture every time I hear "Awesome Bar"? It just seems like one of those things that was a placeholder name that never got changed.
Dev 1: Man, what should we call the new multifunction search-address bar?
Dev 2: I dunno, I've been calling it the "awesome bar" in the code.
Dev 1: Damn that's stupid.
Dev 2: Yeah I know, but I can't think of anything better.
Dev 1: Me either, just leave it for now.
And then, over time, everyone just got used to calling it that, and it ended up released that way.
Frankly, with as many features Firefox has copied from Opera, it'd better be good. Don't get me wrong here, I love FF, but there's no denying that some of their "latest greatest" features are ripped straight from Opera.
If Opera was FOSS, the Firefox team wouldn't have had to write nearly as much code. (insert smiley for people who will inevitably think this is completely serious)
You know, I have a feeling it's "on your end". I can't offer a solution, but I can offer my own anecdotal evidence. I've been using GMail daily (and often several times daily) since the early betas of the service. I have never once had to delete cookies or cache to make GMail load - it's loaded every time for me, just fine.
Now, my mother (50+ computer luddite) uses GMail as well, and gets the problem "You know, it doesn't come up, and I have to go back and click it again, but usually I have to type in 'gmail' to make it work." So, I have seen the problem.
So, again, I can't offer you a solution. Perhaps it's profile corruption in firefox? That was something that used to happen to people. You could try a "fresh" profile to see if that helps. Either that, or it could be your internet connection is a bit shaky.
I think I'd call it a minority. It's supposed to be an international system of measures. At this point, I'd call said country rather backwards. Especially considering you can't even walk into a science classroom in any university in the US and use the imperial system. SI is the way of science, and the way of the world, except for the US - a paltry 300 million people who are falling behind the rest of the world.
Latest System? Are you daft? Celsius has been the standard for science and, well, everywhere except the US, for a long time. Just because the US has been staunchly ignoring the rest of the world's units and measures doesn't mean that it's this newfangled temperature scale only commies and Jews use.
-No virtualization seems to be in shape to provide a good quality hardware 3d acceleration functionality. Among the most desired software, games are high on the list. Wine can play many of them accelerated, Virtualization can not.
Check out the betas of VMWare Fusion, if you have a mac. They're getting pretty close to native speed.
Sure we did, but there were people on both sides of the fence, and the other side always had at least some reasons to switch. All I ever hear about Vista is "it's not as bad as people say", never "it's good because of X Y Z". Maybe I'm just getting old, but I remember people talking about 2k and saying how it never bluescreened and drivers were more compatible, but others said 98se was faster and better. Today, I hear that XP is faster, better, more usable, and easier, while vista is "not that bad". Seems a little different to me.
And just for the record, I use Vista on a daily basis on my computer, and have no problems. It is "not that bad", but it certainly is "not that good" either.
So I just accidentally went to a, um, NSFW website and now I can't erase it!
Shift-Delete when you bring it up. Generally, however, these things end up everywhere (cookies, search history, etc), so your friend Ctrl+Shift+Del (Clear Private Data) works just as well as FF2.
And besides, FF3 isn't a ram guzzling whore like 2 was. The upgrade is at least worth that.
I really don't understand the hate for the "Awesomebar". You do know that if you start typing a URL, it WILL look up that url? For me, the functionality is identical. To get to gmail, I type "g" hit down, hit enter. Facebook, f, down, enter. Slashdot happens to be s or sl. As far as I can tell, it has all the old functionality and a bunch of the new. How is this a problem?
I think it took 4 hours to decompress 9GB off of the DVD. I'm not sure, I ended up falling asleep before it completed.
It took me all of 5 minutes to install the cracked version, onto my 5400 RPM laptop drive. This version came with no DRM, and blacklists no processes. I've already finished the game once through, while people (like you) who bought the game can't even start it.
I'd love to pay for games like this, but when companies treat us this way, and the underground has the red carpet, you can't help but not support this kind of nonsense.
You should have followed the Mass Effect crack, then. There were a huge number of people who said "If it's not cracked by Friday, I'll go out and buy it."
Mind you, these were the people who couldn't actually legally buy it at the time (Europe release was later than the US release), but the fact of the matter is, it did take several days for the game to be completely cracked, and I know of more than a handful of people who "just bought it" because of that.
And when, exactly, would that be? I'd bet you'd be off by years, but no matter what I say I doubt it'll change your mind.
I also rather enjoy how, instead of actually, you know, commenting on the discussion (or admitting you were wrong, something that seems stupid hard for most geeks), you just Foe me, insult me, and add nothing to the conversation. It's too bad no moderator will see your post to send you down into the oblivion it deserves. And don't forget calling me part of the "unwashed [masses]", when you display a keen ability to not only be unable to quote people properly (see your original post), something you decry me on, but you then lack the (rather basic) cognitive ability to connect DX to DirectX as the same thing. Maybe the "unwashed" anger you because you got left behind.
You must have awful memory, as you can't even remember what you typed. Either that or your pattern recognition skills are very low.
You said:
And I've yet to see one that handles DX or GL at all, yet Wine handles it in stride.
And so, I responded to tell you about a VM that handles DirectX. Unless "DX or GL" means something other than the ubiquitous graphics APIs.
Isn't that funny? There were only two points to your post, and I replied to one of them. Yet, you had to be a dick instead of actually using your brain to figure out which half of your post I was talking about.
And I've been on Slashdot for years. Quoting is a relatively new trend, chief.
I suggest you google "VMWare Fusion". It's a Mac VM designed to run Windows, fully, seamlessly, and (in the latest beta versions, which you can download for free (for the time being)), full support of DirectX.
Three days a year there's a problem? I kinda doubt it's that high. Maybe one day every three years, which, knowing how Microsoft products have worked for me in the past, is pretty damn good.
For some reason, people love to decry OSS because of lack of compatibility, and then turn around and ignore Microsoft's own problems.
You mind posting which sites caused the DEP violations? I'm a regular Firefox user, and I've been using 3.0 since the first public betas. I never once have seen anything like that (in fact, I've never seen it DEP on anything, ever.
And yes, my advice actually IS helpful and relevant. I've seen many things happen to other people, the least of which is AJAX-heavy sites not loading, due to Firefox Profile corruption. Cue mountains of posts pointing out, yet again that oldbar doesn't make it exactly like it used to be, just close.

Tsch, posting as an AC, because you know that, not only are you a troll, you can't back up your statements. Enjoy being wrong.

Yessss +10 Karma for fucking up a post. I love slashdot.

Unless you like ram guzzling whores.

Great game, unfortunate DRM scheme. Blame EA.

Nah, Slackware, Vista, Hackintosh tri-boot, since you asked. Gentoo's boring, and if I really wanted that much performance I'd load up Puppy or DSL.
I also rather enjoy how, instead of actually, you know, commenting on the discussion (or admitting you were wrong, something that seems stupid hard for most geeks), you just Foe me, insult me, and add nothing to the conversation.
