I'm "running them all"? No, Slashdot's servers are. Were I running servers, it might be a different story. Then again, which of Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl, and SLASH can be called "bleeding edge"? All of them are very mature products, having gone through several release cycles. It's no wonder then, that they're being used, instead of the bleeding edge. Pointing out that they're being used doesn't show how I'm using Open Source, only that a website I'm on does. Not that it matters, because we're talking about bleeding-edge adoption, not open-source usage.
I recommend you read what the context of my post is before pointing out what's wrong about it.
It only fails because most free software projects are in a constant state of development, thus my model has no initial stable release for which to base it upon. Then again, I meant to imply that I was only talking about major pieces of software, and sadly, free software occupies very little of that space for me.
There's a reason we call it the bleeding edge - because it cuts you. And you bleed. It's much like new software - I won't touch a new OS or game until it's had at least one patch or service pack.
You're going to get modded down. One, because of referencing the rather odious practice of "saging" in the *chan imageboards, and for also referencing those imageboards at all. Also, it wasn't funny. Sorry buddy; try again next time.
I find that maturity, while it trends with age, is not truly dependent on it. I know plenty of 21-year-old people who aren't emotionally mature enough to consent to a sexual act. But, that's really neither here nor there.
Huh? Why should they be punished, exactly? Smoking cigarettes shows a bad sense of judgment, too, but we don't punish people for it. People do stupid things all the time; why is "having sex with a fully developed woman (even if she's 13)" any worse?
Really? Irrelevant? I didn't know that. I thought it made all the difference. But I'll play by your rules for a moment.
given the massive functional improvements to OSes compared to hardware
Your own figures 'showed' that Vista and 3.1 are the "same cost" essentially. But apparently there's been no improvements to hardware, nothing like 386->core 2 duo, no no. We're using the same hardware essentially, and it certainly isn't any cheaper by comparison.
Finally, comparing a Vista Home Premium Upgrade to OS X gives basically the same price
Amazon has Vista Upgrade for ~$200, whereas the Apple Store has Leopard for $130, unless you're smart and get the 4 serial family pack, which is $40 per license. Not basically the same cost. At all.
"But I guess when you actually pay for your key instead of generating it and actually have modern hardware then things Just Work®."
Nice to see you think everyone who has WGA problems has an outdated computer and is a thief. Let me tell you, not only are you wrong, you need to open your eyes to things that people have said in even this very news story.
Then again, if productivity isn't "your thing", you're probably too young to care.
In a vacuum, you might be right. Unless you compare it to, say, the total cost of the computer + os, or the cost of Mac OS X today, or any other things. But those factors would undermine your argument, so it's alright not to include them.
It's not just that. Arcade ports have been coming out for years. The Dreamcast was dubbed the "arcade at home", but what few arcades were still left didn't complain at all.
Yes, it does really matter. Knowing how life evolved gives us insights into how life works here and now. Answering these questions most certainly WILL change issues of today. And, even if they don't, who cares? It's knowledge. Humans have this insatiable urge to know everything they can, leading to today's technologically and medically advanced world. However, occasionally we get people who decry the process without understanding it.
Shut the hell up and go back to Philosophy 100. It's not intolerant to be intolerant of intolerance. If we don't draw the line somewhere, it's impossible to create any kind of structure at all.
Now, I don't condone piracy, as this is the only way (outside being an MS partner) to get this, but you should really look at "Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs". It's meant to be an XP thin client for 98-era boxes, but it runs incredibly on newer hardware, and takes drivers just fine.
I played Sonic the Hedgehog when I was 3 years old. I thought he was the coolest thing in the universe. But I recognised him as completely fictional and existing only in the video game. So, am I just an outlier, or are you wrong?
No, people around here are against unnecessary paternalism. While it may be true that violence begats violence, we have a problem with that being used as an excuse for governments to tell us how to live our lives.
See this. I'll repost it here, too:
"To cry Wolf! To give a false alarm. The allusion is to the well-known fable of the shepherd lad who used to cry Wolf! merely to make fun of the neighbours, but when at last the wolf came no one would believe him.
So, in essence, it means "to be alarmist", as "later warnings may fall on deaf ears".
The technical issue is often due to Journalists having to dumb down technical subjects for the public to understand - or, in some cases, to have technical issues dumed down for them.
As for the "Total fabrication, right?" line, remember that journalists have an obligation to report on only the facts and what's told to them by credible sources. Chances are very good that, despite you thinking you most absolutely know what happened, chances are you haven't a clue. It's the same affect as witnesses to crimes. That's why the press "fabricates" (read: uses the credible sources for) their stories.
I'll probably get modded down for saying this, but lately on Slashdot it seems that bashing the press without justifiation is the best way to get modded up, besides being xenophobic and elitist.
No parallel to Blue Ray and bleeding edge, thus irrelevant to this discussion.

No, but that doesn't stop Scientology from spreading baseless claims in an effort to make their opponents appear less credible.
Google knows. Click the first link.

How many times do you think a US citizen saw the inside of a Japanese internment camp in WWII?
I know my example is to the extreme, but please think about it.
It's only comparable if NoScript really came up with boxes telling you not to go to torrent websites.

(and, sadly, some of the people that work for them fall for it and even think it's "macho" to trade their entire waking life for a paycheck).
Meh. If they're happy, why bother?

M-W defines it as "to give alarm unnecessarily".

Nanaca crash is far superior, actually interactive, and waaay more fun than this!
Companion Cube much?
