I'm "running them all"? No, Slashdot's servers are. Were I running servers, it might be a different story. Then again, which of Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl, and SLASH can be called "bleeding edge"? All of them are very mature products, having gone through several release cycles. It's no wonder then, that they're being used, instead of the bleeding edge. Pointing out that they're being used doesn't show how I'm using Open Source, only that a website I'm on does. Not that it matters, because we're talking about bleeding-edge adoption, not open-source usage.

I recommend you read what the context of my post is before pointing out what's wrong about it.

It only fails because most free software projects are in a constant state of development, thus my model has no initial stable release for which to base it upon. Then again, I meant to imply that I was only talking about major pieces of software, and sadly, free software occupies very little of that space for me.

Really? Irrelevant? I didn't know that. I thought it made all the difference. But I'll play by your rules for a moment.

given the massive functional improvements to OSes compared to hardware

Your own figures 'showed' that Vista and 3.1 are the "same cost" essentially. But apparently there's been no improvements to hardware, nothing like 386->core 2 duo, no no. We're using the same hardware essentially, and it certainly isn't any cheaper by comparison.

Finally, comparing a Vista Home Premium Upgrade to OS X gives basically the same price

Amazon has Vista Upgrade for ~$200, whereas the Apple Store has Leopard for $130, unless you're smart and get the 4 serial family pack, which is $40 per license. Not basically the same cost. At all.

The technical issue is often due to Journalists having to dumb down technical subjects for the public to understand - or, in some cases, to have technical issues dumed down for them.

As for the "Total fabrication, right?" line, remember that journalists have an obligation to report on only the facts and what's told to them by credible sources. Chances are very good that, despite you thinking you most absolutely know what happened, chances are you haven't a clue. It's the same affect as witnesses to crimes. That's why the press "fabricates" (read: uses the credible sources for) their stories.

I'll probably get modded down for saying this, but lately on Slashdot it seems that bashing the press without justifiation is the best way to get modded up, besides being xenophobic and elitist.
