Just as an aside, I've taken several "political test", some very serious and professional, some jokingly and online. Almost universally, I'm a Liberal. But I abhor "nanny states" and the government restricting people to stop them from hurting themselves. Does this mean that our definition of "liberal" is wrong, or our definition of "liberal nanny state" is wrong?

So, your point was, since social networking is really important to users, we'll soon see replacement of other services? Sounds like you're missing the big picture. Social networking, by the very nature of it, requires an internet connection (or some other form of communications, but internet's the fastest). Something like Word doesn't, and is less vulnerable to downtime on my home computer, along with being faster and more secure.

You're right, users want the best. But, if you ever think web apps will give an equal experience to desktop apps, you're deluding yourself. Adding more overhead means it'll always be slower. Remember that web apps, for things that don't need an internet connection, do the same thing as having a slower version of the application combined with some kind of online storage. Unless they can provide some kind of service that desktop apps can't, then they'll never win out.

We want the best possible reliability within limits. This program provides the same (or less) functionality as existing software, with the additional vulnerability of the internet. While you may think it's "reliable enough", my own experience tells me that internet connections can and will go out far more often than RAM spontaneously going bad or overheating video cards. That's a straw man argument.

People are flocking to web applications? Where are you getting this? Can I get a source? Or are you just making this up? Or did you "get a feeling" for it from the number of friends you have using gmail? Because, my experiences tell me, beyond email and flash games, people still want their software to be desktop-based and not web-based.

Another point; before we do anything you said we "need" to do, we need to improve bandwidth to the world if we want web apps to work well. Honestly, I wouldn't know why you'd want to do that, seeing as they do the same thing as a non-web app but runs slower. Sure, they're more portable, but so is Java, and we all know how well Java caught on with the public.

Windows only "works" because it has a huge market share, and thus has vendor support. It really doesn't "just work" out of the box, and (Vista) runs horribly slow on anything but the best computers.

And about "ease of use", "no fiddling with config files" and lets you "develop art/applications/websites with some of the best tools in the world", well, you described Mac OS X to a Tee. It's a great OS, works exactly how it's supposed to out of the box, and has the best, most intuitive "ease of use" of anything on the market. And it's What You Use if you're in the arts.

I'm not even going to cover Linux, as I believe it truly has no place on my Grandmother's desktop computer, and probably enver will. Ubuntu has made it far better, but it still fails the Grandma test (at last check).

I bet this post will get me marked as a Mac fanboy. Guess what? I'm not. Probably won't ever own a Mac - I personally really don't like ease of use (I'm weird).

Also, as a second point, supposed physical superiority (aka e-Penis) really has nothing to do with this disucssion, so please leave it out. It only espouses your ignorance even more by spouting a (quite possibly wrong) stereotype.
