What's with the "wait 6 months"? It's not as though hardware is ever doing anything but getting cheaper and faster. As long as you buy next-to-top-of-the-line, you'll get about the best bang for your buck. And next-to-top-of-the-line should run Doom3 admirably.
Secondly, if gaming is important to you, I don't think it really says "I need a life". Getting a new set of golf clubs costs more than a computer upgrade... do golfers also need a life?
And if kids spent more time reading rather than finding warez, they would be able to spell "illegally"
Yes, I realize that it's probably a typo. So sue me. It's the first thing that popped into my mind.
What you need to realize is that Macs are no panacea. I have to fight the Mac to get things done, and there is NO way to tweak it. It's either their way, which may or may not exist, or the highway.
Ever used XCode? Tried to remove extraneous files from a project? Had it randomly delete a target with no warning? And you can't roll the damn thing back? Undo doesn't work? Hooray for Apple's vaunted user interface thwarting you.
You don't want a compiler on most servers. Strike one against Gentoo, and it's a biggie.
And using swaret/slapt-get, updating is a no-brainer. Besides, why do you need a package manager on a server. Are you really installing/changing a whole lot? Maybe you need to rethink your concept of a server
Anything else?
To each his own. I choose Slack for my desktop because it's so simple. Patrick doesn't add any kernel hacks, any funny compilation flags, anything. It just works as it's advertised. And if it breaks, it tells you why.
I'd be all for using a generic format if it didn't tie me into one company's technology. Which is why most of/. inherently mistrusts MS, including D3D, DX, etc.
Actually, it's just a type of person. I'm a tinkerer. When plumbing, electrical, carpenting, vehicle, etc. work comes up, I'm usually able to figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.
What I think you're trying to say is that most people would prefer to have everything done for them and minimize the thinking required in all aspects of their lives, so they can dedicate more time to remembering that episode of Survivor.[/rant]
I just use a link to Mozilla/Firefox whatever and detect IE. Send them to a page that tells them to use a real browser. Not an option on business sites, but the more personal sites that do it, the more support alternative browsers will have.
Depends on who you are. I've used both quite a bit, and I prefer the Gimp. It just makes sense, and deals with multiple monitors. MDI is an abomination that should be taken out back and shot.
But what if it's a hardware feature? I LIKE my cinema aspect display. Will my software still behave the same on a non-cinema display? Even if we do web apps and such, I'm going to have to deal with [blank]'s virus-ridden machine, and expose my software, etc. to someone else's incompetence as well as my own. At least given current technologies. I don't think web apps are there yet, and that's the only way I'd access my machine from any other one of questionable integrity.
My father never threatened me like that, but my mother always reminded me that she brought me into this world, and she could damn well take me back out, too.
UL stands for "Underwriter's Labratories", as in insurance. I wouldn't want my product to be something that an insurance company wouldn't cover because of massive defects.
First off, you're a troll, I see that, but I have no mod points, so I'll just respond. With a rhetorical question.
Is Mozilla tied into the Operating System, and does it make itself available to run anything that the system can, rather than sandboxing things effectively?
Slashdot isn't the best place for tech support...
1) Firefox is smaller and faster and just a browser. Mozilla is a suite including browser, email, kitchen sink, etc.
2) Yes, they can set themselves as the default browser, so clicking links starts them. Not sure about the run box, though.
3) Yes, Mozilla does, but you can have it close when you're done IIRC. Firefox's download manager thingy is much nicer to use, a good hybrid between the two, and you can tell it to disappear when it's done downloading
Anecdote: Friends of mine broke their computer. I reinstalled Windows. They used to have MS Office on there, but it wasn't a legal version, so I told them to try out OpenOffice.org. They have 6 kids under 18, and they all like OO.o BETTER than they liked MS Office.
As for the GIMP, I have gotten to where I know what I'm doing with it, and I actually like it quite a bit. It does everything I've ever used Photoshop for (including some pretty heavy editing and compositing), so it's a quite capable replacement in my opinion.

So, when Windows doesn't work with sound or video out of the box, it's not newbie friendly?
Nice troll.
I had to configure how to access my WAP, but other than that, wireless worked out of the box for me.

Wow. Nice tone.
Too bad you can't read. Notice where I said swaret/slapt-get? Yeah, that takes care of security updates.
You may apologize now.

I hate to be pedantic, but the whole point of this is that it's air breathing ;) Rockets can go really freaking fast already.
Silly rabbit, 64bits aren't just for servers any more. But I'm guessing you knew that.

And by not using IE, I don't even have to worry about secondary programs like Ad-Aware eating up my resources. Who's smarter now?
If we really had to make it secure, the browser could return a dummy window handle, then feed all those function calls into a black hole.

Really? I've found that the Gimp makes more sense to me than Photoshop. But I may just be insane, too.

teet? You need to work on your 1337, sir.
