Ehhh... they did fix some fairly serious design errors in Vista (mostly the GDI concurrency and network latency bullshit). I still hate the DRM and the fact that Microsoft thinks it's more their computer than mine, but for a gaming machine, Win7 ain't half bad and since XP will never get DX10 or 11, I'm gonna go with 7 over Vista.

You know why people don't follow the published API's? Because they're woefully inadequate, and even if you do follow the API, half the time the fucking documentation is wrong. Seriously... talk to someone who's written anything to Win32, which you pretty much have to do if you want anything more advanced that "place form X here"

You don't have kids, do you? Disney has a TON of value in their old films. Kids will watch the same movie hundreds of times, until they can quote and follow every single line. And then they'll watch it again. Hell, my wife still has Aladdin pretty much memorized. They want these laws because they realize that they can rake in the cash and not have to do any work other than bitching to Congress about the evil citizens wanting copyright to not be forfuckingever and a day, and copying things like they're part of the culture instead of Disney's sole property.

Turn the key off, and then back into the on (but not starting) position on his Chrysler. Many (almost all that I'm aware of) modern ignitions have a column interlock that prevents steering. Your brakes still had pressure for one or two pushes if they aren't completely mechanical due to leftover pressure in the lines, but that line isn't re-pressurized when the engine isn't running. With power steering, it only gets important when you're at low speeds. When you're traveling fairly fast, power steering does almost nothing.

...yes, it does. If the engine dies, the accessories stop turning. Have you never driven a car where the engine has gone? Hell, just turn your key off when you're on an empty road, see how much power steering you have. Absolutely none. You have brake pressure for one good stop, and that's about it.

From what I understand, NVIDIA's driver architecture is significantly different. The NVIDIA driver replaces most of the X graphics stack, whereas fglrx and ATI's open-source projects have always tried to work mostly with the X11 system. Personally, I prefer ATI's approach, and spend all my GPU and CPU money with them any more.

Why does nobody think of the cooling? It doesn't matter how small the boxes are, if you cram too many of them into one room without adequate cooling, you're in for a world of hurt. A bigger, faster machine is often more economically sound than a smaller one like this, unless you have a dedicated, seriously cooled server room, and in that case, the non-server form factor would be more of a pain in the ass than the space savings would win you, IMHO.

Rolling release isn't really great for stable systems, though. There's a reason that there are LTS releases of Ubuntu and RHEL is supported for so long... making major changes as rolling-release distros are wont to do can break a working system. And if you're mostly trying to get work done and not dick with your computer, you want predictability, not bleeding-edge everything. You only want major upgrades on certain software, such as your web browser and office suite, and then only when they enable new functionality.

Same with the markets, terrorism, and thinking of the children with all our various "war on X" movements.
