  1. Re:How can we change this? on The Problems with Broadband in America · · Score: 1

It's not the download speed, it's the upload speed. I have 2mbps download here - it's plenty for browsing, and it'll work for .iso's if you have a little patience. But I only have 256kbps up, which is pretty limiting. I have a static IP, but I can't really run a webserver that'll get a lot of hits unless its mostly text. I can't host large files. I can't run a online radio station at a decent bitrate at all. 4mbps down would be nice, but it really wouldn't change much. 2mbps both ways would really be a significant upgrade though.

  3. Re:Thank you Apple! on ABC Affiliates Grapple With TV-Show Downloads · · Score: 1

It's the downloadable TV shows that you can purchase from the iTMS that's the big hit. The ability of the iPod to play them on the go may still turn out to be a gimmick - it's hard to say right now if people really are interested in watching video on a portable device with a 2" screen. So far, the limited success of video players by companies like iRiver seems to indicate that people aren't.

If I can't do what I want with the file, then it's not really mine - regardless of what Steve Jobs says.

Its usually BUSINESSES that buy these cards, thats why they can afford them at such a cost.

I'm sure the gaming companies buy lots of the high end gaming cards, so their developers, designers, and testers can play around with tomorrow's mainstream level cards today.

Nope, its fair use to copy VHS tapes to DVD. Same for copying CDs to tapes or ripping to MP3. VHS tapes are analog, so you can't run afoul of the DMCA either. You just can't do things like make copies of your VHS tapes to give them away to your friends.

Did everyone forget what initiated the attack on Iraq? It was because Saddam was in direct violation of a treaty. Remember after the first Gulf War he signed a treaty to allow UN inspectors to make sure he didn't have any WMD's and then remember how often Saddam would prevent the inspectors from doing their jobs or outright kick them out. We even gave him almost a month to allow the inspectors back in but he refused so we attacked.

It seems many people have forgotten, as it is now a couple of years later, we now know that Saddam did not have those WMD either. But that doesn't matter, because the Iraqis have been "liberated".

Most people are going to install it, play around a while, then revert back to their previous OS (legal or not).

Now, what would be cool would be an iPod like remote for your component MP3 player. It would have a screen and the wheel, along with a wireless connection to talk to the box. The box would contain harddrive(s), as well as all the decoding chips and the brains of the MP3 player. It would preferably have digital out, and an ethernet jack and/or wifi to hook up to your home network. That way you would have the best of both worlds - the familiar iPod interface, but the storage and sound quality you would expect from a stereo component.

I think if the US can support three cars per four people then saturation of the iPod market won't happen until we get 3 iPods per 4 people; with almost 300 million people, that means over 200 million iPods sold; since Apple is sold 6.5 million in the 4th quarter, and something like 6 million the quarter before, that means we have another 8 years at this rate, less if the sale rate increases.

Well, there is probably something like 10 ballpoint pens for every person in the US. What does that mean for iPods and automobiles? Nothing! You're reasoning makes no sense whatsoever.
