I thought it was cancelled a year ago!!

I'm admit, I'm a Trekker, from way back when the scary guys with the big heads burned a hole in a rock face with their minds, and have watched every incarnation since. But when Enterprise came out I flipped - easily as enjoyable as the first series.

Then, a few weeks into the first season, the network here in Seattle changed the show date and time. I took this in my stride and continued watching the show.

A few weeks later it changed again, but this time I was out of town and missed the pre and post show announcements, and missed a few weeks. Finally I got it together to track it down and watched a few shows, then the season ended, and I never quite figured out when it came back on after that. I think the second season premiered on a Monday and then it switched to another night a week later.

And I haven't seen it since, which really bums me out because I used to really like it.

This Enterprise situation reminds me of those almost extinct basic red Lego bricks. It's not that the product sucks, it's just so difficult to find that you find yourself giving up on it after a while!

Sure, if you take out all those PC's that do menial tasks like handling bar code info for retailers, process orders at Burger King or even crunch numbers at your accountants office, the ratio of Macs to PC's would be way higher.

But for some reason every single PC in existence is added to the equation, which doesn't really reflect the ratio of computers that are actually being used by people doing worthwhile things.

  10. Re:Already dieing on MIDI Keyboard/Computer: Neko64 · · Score: 5, Insightful

Tying a keyboard to the computer isn't such a good idea for a number of reasons, the most obvious being the inability to move up to a bigger, or better, keyboard.

In the days of the Prophet V, Emulator, Juno 106 Etc. the keyboard was a part of the whole instrument, tied in via several cables. So if you really wanted the Prophet V sound, but didn't like the keyboard, you were screwed.

Today there are few compelling reason to having the all in one thing going on, unless you really must have an all in one unit. Just stick a couple of modules into a rack and control them using a keyboard that has the feature set, and the type of key action, that really suits you.

Better still, just run all those synths and samplers in soft mode within a G4 PowerBook.

"People who really want to hear good stereo sound should spend their effort on the two things that will make a lot of difference: (1) getting good speakers, and (2) working on the acoustics of the room"

You forgot (3) an amp with more power than you need.

I got bored with my home stereo system a year ago and decided to put together more of a studio monitor system instead. I now have a pair of Tannoy Reveal studio monitors hooked up to a Hafler TA 1100 power amp, all for less than $1,000, and I'm really enjoying being able to hear things I've never heard before, with a clarity that gives that "being there" feeling.

In my past life I spent quite a while in recording studios and always marvelled at how awesome the music sounded. Then I'd hear it on a regular hi-fi and it would turn into everything else out there, a watered down version. I used to blame this on the many and varied processes the master had to go through to end up on a retail CD, but since setting up more of a studio monitor type enviroment in my home I'm realizing a lot has to do with having a big fat amp powering a set of big fat speakers.

I also decided to use a Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro mixer to route the audio here and there, instead of the usual hi-fi type amp.

The whole things is mounted in a rack mount cabinet.

It's my understanding that if you export an audio file from a CD using AAC, then burn it to a CD using MP3, that AAC file is reencoded with a different algorithm which makes for more loss.

Then, if you were to export the MP3 from the CD as an AAC file you'll be losing even more.

It's best just to get that AAC from the Apple store and play it from your PC or stick it on an iPod. You can always backup to as many firewire drives and DVD's as you want, you just won't be able to authorize it for playback on more than three PC's.
