  1. Re:nice, but... on Heroes III Coming to Linux · · Score: 1

Then, there's the fact that Linux remains rather rudimentary. At least compared to a highly polished GUI like Mac OS 9.0

Strange, I find MacOS to be annoying and generally a drain on my productivity. I really like WindowMaker and the command line.

Even the graphical assistants in Gnome are confusing, I clicked on /dev the other day and nothing even remotely resembling a drive appeared (dev1a?)

As an aside, would you expect /dev/hda1 to be represented as a HD Icon in gnome's gmc? I wouldn't as this seems more confusing. /dev/hda1 is a block device, not a drive. If for instance most distro's have /dev/hda[1-9] wouldn't a newbie find it more confusing to look in the /dev directory and panic that linux has detected phantom harddrives, rather than unused block devices.

I'm happily playing CivCTP right now. It's a pretty recent and interesting game. Also I can't wait to get Railroad Tycoon. Addtionally, when i first got CivCTP it crashed regularly after 1 hour of play. I emailed loki and they sent me a beta patch the next day. The finished patch came out a few days later. Never have I received such attention when I've had difficulty with a game for the windows/Mac/Console platform.

The beauty of linux is that due to the community standards/practices companies really need to embrace us (the community) or be ignored.

If you are against Linux, why read slashdot? This is not meant as an insult, but rather as an eye-opener. You are obviously here for a reason, I'd suggest picking up a cheap Linux cd from cheap bytes and see what you're missing.

It is very usable, but a little more behind then the other platforms package wise. feel free to email me if you have any questions: mcorde61@maine.edu

I'm wondering if anyone out there uses Java for something useful. Perhaps I sound naive, but I've never seen it deployed beyond annoying applets or slow as molasses games in COS246 (Java Programming) And java support in Netscape seems to be lacking to put it nicely.

Pardon? I'm running Linux silly, (psst. This is Slashdot)

I don't understand your argument. If i pre-ordered a machine, be it G4 or a Pentium, and I was treated the way that Apple is now treating people I would seriously think about jumping ship and joing the competitor. My computer AFAIK is not affected by any current Manufacturer defects, etc, but if it was I sure as hell would be wary of purchasing another machine from the same vendor.

Plus, Mac users are overwhelmingly happy with their computers. That counts for a lot.

Do you have any proof to back that one up? I'm guessing not. The statement is so vague as to be devoid of meaning. Mac users (who, all of them? ) are happier with their computers (than who? Toaster owners? Horseback riders?)

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to aggrivate you or start a holy war. I really think Macintosh is a good company and in the very least a competitor to MS. I just think that corporations in general need to realize that people will only stand for so much before they join the enemy's ranks.
