    we finally have recompiled over 4 million lines of code

    yawn. 4 million lines of code my ass. I've ported gnome to about 4.5 billion punch cards. And it works greate on my Hollerith machine. Beat that Open Source movement.

    I hate to be a troll, but does anyone use yahoo anymore when google search is so much better? Yes I understand Yahoo has other services, but there are other sites that do those services better than yahoo. (e.g. Yahoo Auctions vs Ebay, etc )

    Ever heard of Solaris? Or Java? Sun is primarily a hardware company, but they do have much more to offer.

  10. Java finally works! on Netscape 6.0 Released · · Score: 2

    I've been using mozilla nightly builds for a while and java support has always caused the browser to crash. Finally, with netscape6 java support *seems* to work!

    Netscape6: Observations...

    • Debug Info is still spit to stdout by default. This clearly should not be the case with a non-devel release of a product.
    • It still *feels* bulky and slow, it doesn't minimize as quickly as netscape4.x, load pages, etc
    • Although it allows you to install pieces, The html composer was not a choice ( that i noticed )and seems to be forcefully installed.
    • Under tasks I get an option for 'Address Book', even though I chose not to install the mailer. Clicking it has not effect except a number of stderr error messages
    • The "about netscape" page is uhh... beautifully formatted, check that out when you get a chance

    Here is a list of every process it started on my machine:

    Seems a little excessive, but hey... maybe thats progress...

    On a side note does anyone know how to start konquerer w/o having it start any kde stuff? It seems like a much better choice than netscape/mozilla and uses less resources. I just wish it was a stand alone component. KDE gives me the willies.

    I went to my college career fair today looking for a summer internships

    The problem is sadly, that neither Microsoft or you it seems are familiar with a concept much of the world is quite comfortable with. We call them seasons. And if there were no unix vendors at your summer job fair it is because they know summer was 2 months ago.

    Why do I get this image of 1 guy and a table of microsoft weenies who have been locked in the gymnasium since the summer job fair.

    Disclaimer - the previous sections were meant to be funny, you may argue that probably this person simply lives in a different portion of the world then myself; and that America's borders do not comprise the entire globe. To you I would say, get bent.

    First Let me say that Debian is my absolute favorite distro, but I think it is unusual that slashdot reports on non-esential Debian goals/activities. Debian's installer, yes it was mentioned on the developer mailing list this week, but is it really slashdot worthy considering the next version of debian won't be released for at least another year unless we're really, really lucky? I don't think so.

    Nope, you're wrong. OpenSSH and Gnupg are open source and no one has managed to crack them. The reason is not that it isn't possible, but because both algorithms use keys significantly large to necessitate a fleet of machines years of churning to break the encryption.

    If you have the time, try cracking an encryption book, it's pretty cool stuff.

    BabelFish, though quite a interesting idea produces the most broken language I've ever read.

    For those of you with mozilla, look under edit->translate. It is a link (sortof) to Gist-In time which in my opinion provides much better translations.

    I think the author was referring more to the end-user experience than the kernel

    Even just by face value I hands down prefer WindowMaker and a few xterms to MacOS in any day.

    My experience with my wifes mac: click...click... click... the finder did what? Son of a $#@!!

    Did anyone else find the beginning of the artivle a little painful. Unix users and there system was painted in a rather less tha flattering light at first, then followed up with how good unix makes os x.

    The part about the MAC ( pre os x i assume ) being a sport roadster and unix box being the pug-ugly workhorse leaves a sour taste. I also find the analogy of 'sport roadster' to be little unprecise. I think a better description of the pre BSD blessed Macintosh is a garbage can, a toilet, and if you're sticking with the car analogy a broken down scooter that even the windows 2000 guys are laughing at.

    To be a little more precise: Unix is beautiful in its simplicity and power. It is not a ugly work horse, but a sleek muscle car.

    And you can stick that in your in your gui and smoke it you unoriginal, mac loving bastard.

    I don't because last time I tried I discovered my incredbile distaste for cvsup, which (correct me if I'm wrong) is an ugly gui application. With regular cvs I could write a little script and update my sources at a regular interval. With cvsup that functionality is gone.

    he did what I did and renamed the user with uid 0 to 'bob' and made a non-privledged user named 'root'. I just did this to confuse people at work.

    'apt-get install xyz' is somewhere better then 'pkg_add -r xyz' ?

    One major benefit is that apt-get install "xyz" works fine, but pkg_add "xyz" bombs unless I use pkg_add "xyz-1.tgz". In other words i need to know the entire file name. Which is something I don't care to remember. I just trust apt to keep everything up to date.

    I disagree. From my experience the Ports system seems a little clunky and inconvienient. Have you tried apt? apt-get and apt-cache truly are great.

    I object to fact that alot of extra software I'll never use is installed by default. For instance, I don't use rsh,rcp and it is just taking up space. What would be nice is if they broke everything into packages ( ala linux )
    and allowed me to finely costomize my machine at install time ( and later if I wished ), perhaps this new packaging format will allow me to do just that.

  24. Hooray! on Unified BSD packaging system? · · Score: 1

    I love openbsd, but the task of keeping it up to date seems a little more daunting then with my favorite linux distro (debian).

    BSDs could only benefit from a packaging tool the likes of apt. Yes the ports system is good, but nothing beats apt-get install xyz.

    What I'd really like to see in both debian and BSD is a way to snag source from a trusted server and have it built on your machine. Yes apt-get source install xyz tries to do this, but fails miserably if your machine doesn't include the necessary devel files. It would be great if apt (or another tool) would check your machine for necessary libraries/headers and if they were not available would download appropriate files and build them too, perhaps in a special directory so there not intersperced with the rest of your system, just set aside to build further packages.

    Why bother writing software when I can get some communist hippies to rewrite portions of the code at no cost to me. Life is sweet.

  25. Websphere != apache ?? on IBM WebSphere SE To Be Opened? · · Score: 1

    I was under the impression that websphere was little more then apache, jserv, and a few other well known software projects.

    I was also under the impression that websphere was regarded as one of ibm's worst software packages.
