I might be a bit behind now, but the messenger in question says the following on their front main page:
Overview Star Messenger is a multi protocol instant messenger client, based on Miranda IM client, designed to be efficient and easy to use.
Then, JUST below the download link, theres another that says Source files available here.
Now, there may be other things wrong with it, but at initial glance, that looks just like any other legitimate derivative works, and if they are complaining about something being a rip-off, then perhaps they shouldn't have used the GPL.
Only in one instance however. I always use "a" "f" "idx" type variables when its entire definition/use is private and on the same page. Short loops etc.
Wherever the scope is larger than a page or so, or its on a public interface I use full names.
DocumentArea, PageTemplateStyle etc
Makes sense, and doesn't confuse any of the other devs. I tend to keep functions compact and to the point.
I used to think the same, now though, the Mac Mini is a lot closer to my budget range. There will be at least one in this household before the end of the year.
Theres a problem with your reasoning about owning the DVD in question.
Whilst it may be possible to argue that you do infact own the DVD, and you are making your fair use rights, how exactly do you explain allowing the DVD to be uploaded to 50 or so other users who DON'T have the required rights.
Remember, the MPAA/RIAA are more interested in sharing than obtaining dodgy individual copies.
Your right, the header to this article states this is an evolution of phishing.
There is a way to attack the router rather than the local machine, hence when all local machines inside the network request DNS records, they get the poisoned results instead.
With these poisoned results, you are led to some dodgy hacker site made to look like paypal etc. It *is* still phishing in that you click something and expect a legit site to appear, and it looks like the legit site, except you are giving your details to someone dodgy.
Inside the article are all the magical details you need to answer your other queries:)
I sincerely hope NOBODY follows closely the advice given by an anonymous coward. The information may be correct, but can you trust the source? Verify the facts before proceeding with any changes. Speak to a trusted security advisor about the details brought up here.

Saying that these sites are legal or illegal is like opening a legal knife shop.
The torrent protocol isn't illegal, the sites running them aren't illegal, the content distributed from different places however can be illegal in most countries.
Now I look like a plonker! I went and relooked at the problem, and apparantly theres a fix (put in place well after I initially made my assertions about it..)
Its not a simple one click thing, but it may work.
Windows search is BAD. Its absolutely terrible. Inside the registry, every defined filetype must be associated with a scanning routine. There is no way to setup a default text scanner without overbloating your registry for every used filetype. Around the time when sp1 came out, MS released a patch for the search that fixes *some* of your filetypes - hence your ability to index.c or.h files.
How does it handle files of other types -.htm, or.asp or.py?
Older windows searches might have been slow, but you KNEW it was doing something, and scanning through the disc methodically looking inside each file. XP screwed with this.
No, you got it all wrong.

USPTO Patent number 23894237894298734

I think I just filled in the missing bits
I should patent that!
But geeks have had the stigma from the very start?
How the hell can they say they were attracted to the job in the first place.
We have people like gay lord Gates, and monkey boy balmer, women have (mostly) never aspired to be geeks.
Hell, why do you think that ugly BSD chick is a poster girl, being a geek is not glamerous, or even an attractive career for women.
That may be changing now, but its still not great.
Ahhhhhhh, but if you broke the song down into notes and melodies, then the musician will also have only created a small amount.
:)
Audio tracks as we hear is afterall just an inefficient rendering of the sheet music
Don't be worried about the quantity of code, but focus on the quality.
Hang on, NASAs budget gets cut whilst you spend millions of dollars per day to kill people?
Sure, there are problems in the world, but I would rather spend a small amount of money on a peaceful mission than on bombs and bullets.
Why fake it?

Do not look into the sun with your remaining $4.2 million.
And every day until then, we will hear about Chicago considering a city-wide wireless network ;)
Hang on, I followed your link.

Single letter/short variable names.
I use them A LOT.

Stand still, close your eyes, shoot, winner everytime.
Sounds like me playing Counter Strike.
erm well except for the winning part anyway.
want to buy a mac just for the OS

Thank you for putting words into my mouth.
My statement of "The sites running them aren't illegal" is absolutely correct.
Sites running bittorrent file downloads are not illegal.
Downloading copyright material without consent is illegal no matter what the protocol.
I think you slashdotted the government.
Heres something a little quicker at loading.

Thats the whole point of the article.
By poisoning the DNS cache, typing the CORRECT address will lead you to a fake site.
Additional features in the slashdot edition:
Increase penis size by at least 20%
Makes you irresistable to the opposite sex*
Automatic emailing to RIAA/MPAA/CIA and FBI when illegal content seeded.
Dynamic updating of your DNS, making your banking and ebay experience better.
Full software testing
Dupe removal
*No guarantee they will be the same species however.

Heres a link
I can't actually confirm if this works as expected yet (very unclean bloated registry), but if it does, then it will be easier.

How does it handle files of other types -
Older windows searches might have been slow, but you KNEW it was doing something
I would rather sacrifice speed for accuracy.
Windows also needs a plugin.
I thought at the very least, the search tools would have an automatic list of files to EXCLUDE.
Get rid of avi files and iso images (by default) and large archives, and I might actually find whats in front of me.
I hate NOT knowing whats missing, and its worse knowing there is a file right in front of me, but the search tool refuses to index it.
I made my own in the end, and it handles everything I can throw at it.
In soviet russia, the news finds YOU.
I bet every single Library developed by Microsoft started out life as a tiny, well crafted specific interface.
Just perfect for developing what was needed.
Then one customer/developer needed X addition, and another required Y addtion, and so on...
MS have tried to be accomodating to everyone, and have made their stack of cards incredibly tall.
I have tremendous respect for the developers stuck underneath that mess, and wish them the best of luck finding a clean path out of it.
