  1. Re:At last a Civil Article! on Hydrodemolition Robot Crushes With Water · · Score: 1

Indeed, its good to get a Civil Eng article, as I myself am one. I'm suprised to find another Civ Eng here. I was also suprised that concrete roads are so commonplace in the states. I work for the State roads corporation (ie, we run the network) and we avoid concrete roads like the plague, prefering asphalt or similar flexible pavements. How long do these concrete roads last? We use concrete in bridges only, really. Oh, with the exception of tight turning lanes for multi-wheeled trucks so they don't destroy our pavement.

  2. Re:How is this not bad for the foundation? on Hydrodemolition Robot Crushes With Water · · Score: 1

IAACE (I am a civil eng., at least thats what that printout off the 'net tells me) and the vibrations are exactly what causes Concrete to fracture and weaken. Concrete is strong in compression but weak in tension (so much so that in good design, concrete should never be relied on to act in tension, hence steel reinforcing). So, the vibrations cause an oscillating force that creates tension (albeit quick and not strong) that over the length of the bridge and sustained periods of time would literally shake the bridge to pieces.

A few Westwood games were like that though, notably Tiberian Sun (with James Earl Jones having no idea what the interviewer is talking about, quite amusing). Yeah, the article was quite interesting, also how Stan Lee is interested in getting faithful AND fun movies to the cinema. And hes honest with his knowledge of games, but the cool thing is he treats them like a comic book with more flexiblity in the storytelling. I like the Sgt Fury tale of Lees, where the entire series was a dare. Also very amusing is where the interviewer thinks that he has to state that Ang Lee is no relation to Stan Lee.

  17. What The? on Half-Life 2 Coverage Appearing · · Score: 1

Alright, I'll bite, as in I disagree. Back in the day, Half-life had an amazing and intelligent story line, especially when compared to most games. I mean, the whole problem was more or less caused by yourself (Freeman) and his nutty scientist co-workers meddling with stuff they didn't understand and Freeman shoving in that unusual material that he was testing in too far. For computer games, the story was intelligent. Or are you comparing it with Shakespeare, Twain and other authors of note? But, I digress. You've got the Army, coming in to wipe out the aliens, and scientists alike. You had goofy security guards, who helped/hindered you. You were captured and lost everything... you had the large monster that could hear sound and where ever you walked it would split you in two... then you had the whole g-man x-file"ish" conspiracy. I loved the story, and I thought it was well thought through. Hell, the whole situation was the Freemans fault, and I find that an amusing irony. Which brings this ramble/rant to humour (proper spelling, UK/AU!) which was superb in HL, with the scientists trying to escape into the air duct and then the next thing you see is a couple of bones fly back out, and Barney and his wise-cracks... Half-life was many things, and smart was one of them.
Actually if you want to get pseudo-intellectual, the whole scientific dilemma of playing around with things in an unprofessional manner, and the results, as well as the military response to the crisis were intelligent comments relevant in todays society.
Man, I feel like I'm writing my honours project again... If I wasn't at work, I'd spend more time. But really.

I sort of fear that the same will happen to DNF (Did Not Finish?) where despite being good without hype, results in being crap with the hype.
Strangely enough, last year I went back to C&C:TS and its not too bad a game, I quite enjoyed it. One thing Westwood always did well was the FMV (Full motion video). The only things these have in common with Melb Uni is that Uni provides the net access and special access to Uni networks (ECR/Webraft/its etc.) I sincerely doubt that Uni could be liable for this. And how could Melb Uni be liable for something students do that they have signed a contract that they won't do? (before you get an account/login at Uni you have to sign an agreement that you won't look up pr0n/mp3z etc, or participate in illegal file sharing) The students responsible should be punished, not Uni. While this statement is a little coarse, Australia does have one of the most stable positions in the world, politically and security wise.
I doubt that the builders of such a facility would want as small a risk as possible of the Elevator being fought over. The subcontinent with all the fun between Pakistan and India and problems with the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka would be causes for concern.
