You obviously don't have a lot of experience using a version of office that is more than one behind. If you had, you would realize that this is a very common strategy for M$. OpenOffice is a lot more compatible opening office XP documents than Office 2000 is. I have no statistics to prove this, but I speak from experience as some one who frequently has to try and open Instructors documents that were made in Office XP. -> Fritz

  2. Re:I live in Kansas... on Proof Is In: Kansas Is Flatter Than A Pancake · · Score: 3, Interesting

Ok, I'll be honest and say I haven't seen a lot of Kansas. I've only been in it for short bursts because Nebraska's main airport is right on the state borderline. However, if the "hills" in Nebraska are similar to the "hills" in Kansas, and I'll bet they are, they are very gradual. The average slope on the hills can't be more than 7 degrees, the real steep hills having a 10 degree slope.

Now this doesn't mean the hills or valleys don't have an impact on the landscape. On the contrary, they stand out because there are so few of them. However, they are only noticable because that slope continues for a quarter mile so while looking across the vast open spaces you see a break in the nothingness.

Back to my point, flatness is affected more by extreme changes in altitude than it is gradual ones, so these hills hardly affect the scale of flatness. Pancakes, have heavy drops at their edges which drastically reduce flatness and several deep (relatively) pits produced by bubbles popped near they end of their cooking. Each one of these pits probably effects flatness more than a Kansas hill.

I spent way too much time on this post.

This is an article on IGN. It can't be taken seriously. While I'll probably be trolled for saying this, IGN is the world's biggest fanboy site. They don't give bad reviews because they are so excited to be playing the new game or using the new system they can't help but shout with glee.

IGN's one redeeming quality, and it's failing, is that it covers everything. There is no other site out there that I'm aware of that covers as many games as IGN. There is a reason nobody else covers so many games, and that's because you cannot give quality coverage of that much material.

I don't believe I ever made it past the 3rd Chapter or so because only about half of the Code Examples were working correctly. It was so bad, I dropped Java and went back to C and have only recently tried another attempt at Java. I even tried the CD that came with the book and several (although not as many) of the examples on that did not even work. I ended up throwing it all away and I haven't bought a Dummies book since.

As for whether or not OpenGL is the language for you, that really depends on your ultimate goals. You may at some point find it doesn't have enough raw power for you. Personally I think that before you ever get to that level, you will have benefitted tremendously from the practice of using ANY 3D API because it takes repetition to be get your brain into the right mode.
