I think you completely missed out on everything that actually happened with the antitrust Microsoft lost(But really won when you look at the "Penalty")... It sum it up.. You are partly right... By version 4.0 They were comparable products.. As to which is better.. Thats moot in my view.. Its like arguing If Ford/Chev/Dodge is better.. Its a moot point. What it really comes down to is preference...

Microsoft won for a few factors... #1 is convince (Their product was "Free" and Netscape wasn't). Microsoft used their predatory licensing to Prevent computer manufacturers from pre installing Netscape at all.. (Threats of Yanking their licensing to pre install windows was used therefore putting them at a huge disadvantage compared to PC manufacturers that can pre install windows).. Still on this topic of convince.. when you have a product sitting on your desktop that is "Free" to you and there is a competing product that may or may not be "Better" your at least going to give your freebie a try...

People can argue and argue but it boils down to IE had a unequal footing to Netscape for it to achieve market saturation it did in the time frame it did.. if IE had to stand on the same ground Netscape did the story would be alot different...

Microsoft also was making patches to the windows OS that caused Netscape to become unstable and crash alot... This is a point thats been highly debated and I am not sure of the actual outcome of this point... I can seem to find the document that listed all of MS's actions that the DOJ found MS guilty of... so I am not sure if that was one that made it through...

But your sadly misinformed if you think IE won out over Netscape solely on the fact it was a better browser... There are a vast number of elements that contributed IE's domination in the browser wars...

I am not trying to start a flame war but your comment completely skirted Issues without any mention of factors that lead to IE's domination in the browser wars (Setting Side personal opinions of what browser is better).

    "gained some experience... less hackability.."

Experience in the console market doesn't seem to lead to less hackable consoles... I don't see a console on the market that hasn't been hacked to shreds... So looking at Sony/Sega/Nintendo with their wealth of experience on the console market (Heck between all 2 they owned the Console markets almost as long as Microsoft has had a strangle hold on the desktop market) yet their consoles have been hacked to shreds...

Sony on the other hand seems to foster this behavior and sega seems to have dropped from the market.. Leaving Nintendo with the "Least Hackable" Console out there...

Basically for the most part when you have a Company "Fostering" the console hacking arena making a console less hackable might not be the best Marketing strategy... Its all a numbers game... When they produce figures on the number of consoles sold the more the better as it gives game developers their potential market for their game when they sign a Exclusive deal with the console maker and in general bolster support for the console itself by the customer base.

Mostly tech schools fail to Properly teach students proper skills... instead they drown them in technical procedure and text books and think they will learn something... When ever i see a tech school grad I allways ask them for a difficult problem and their solution to it.. 99.99999+ of them are Stumped when I ask them how their solution relates to the theory of the actual problem. 90%+ Tech school grads don't have any idea at all on proper troubleshooting techniques the vast Majority use what I call the "Pin The Tail on the Donkey" approach to troubleshooting.. and I can't half blame them ... as the come out of a tech school armed with enough knowledge and confidence to be blind and dangerous in their abilities to admin anything but their home PC. That or they only use half of the Cause and Effect aproach.. The see The Cause and its effects but think nothing of the effects of their solution once its implemented Causing problems again that are usually worse..

Its usually a horrible situation with tech grads that do not have a firm background in computers... You usually have to break them and completely retrain them and show them how to utilize their knowledge they obtained in school...

But there are many many different shades of bad techs out there.. and as of late more of them are becoming fluent in linux and can get by alot of questions in that area and still be dangerous... But the "Pin the Tail on the Donkey" approach is allways a sure sign of a tech you shouldn't hire unless you have time and resources to retrain them if their personality isn't resistant to it.

Taxes should be based on Performance of Communications capable networks... I use the word Performance in a broader term here... Performance meaning how well your share your current infrastructure.. How many services are offered over that service.. Customer satisfaction of services on that network.. So that the fewer services offered will bump your taxes up.. The less competition you have on your infrastructure the higher the taxes are.. And I am not talking about end user tax aswell.. Hit em hard on Profits... Force them to open their infrastructure to competition and new services that are reliable and useable to the end user.. This will ultimately end up bringing fiber nearer to your house.. Currently Fiber to the house is not needed.. Copper can easily do the trick and once you have reduced your copper down to less than 100-200 Feet reliability of it will go through the roof. Having fiber just running down your "Alley" and not to your house can easily cut 2/3's of the cost of the infrastructure roll out.. Which is a huge chunk of change and increases financial viability..

We are just starting to push the envelope of what copper can do for us for short runs... Look at DSL.. It demonstrates what copper can do over fairly long distances.. Cut your distance down to 100-200 feet and I am sure they can hit near Gigabit speeds with current infrastructure thats inplace.. There only needs to be motive to produce a product to meet the demand... But honestly... 100Mbit could easily serve Communication needs for the next 15-20 Years... (Ok.. Let this be my Understatement of my Life :) like "640K is all the memory anyone will ever need" or "We only see a market for 5-10 computers in the whole world")... By that time the current last few feet should need to be replaced (if not done so all ready) with fiber that virtually has no limit...

But who knows how business could dement this type of Structure to promote business.. Maybe another good approach would be to institute Draconian type laws that would get both cable and telco's to build a single infrastructure owned and operated by the state or county to support their service so that they maybe opened up on a realistic competitive basis and lower the barrier of entry to these markets significantly enough that we can start to see "Service" Once again in these areas... Right now Customer Service in these areas is lacking due to the monopoly on infrastructure even though the Tout "Customer Service is our #1 focus" yet they don't seem to care when you receive poor service.. you only get their attention when you have no-service then its about the least ammount of money they can spend to get you service instead of fixing everything they should be.

In the long run... The citizens should own the infrastructure that delivers the services they consume so the market of available services stays competitive and abundant maintaining quality. on that note Property tax would best suit that type of model...
