    Politicians answer to voters. When voters are fat and lazy, politicians listen to fat and lazy people. When voters are scared of LSD, of don't like geeky stuff, or certain types of music etc, then expect stupid laws and lack of funding to the good stuff.

    Drunk people fighting, and blaming the English. Soon Scotland will be separate and they'll have to find someone else to blame too (although I'm sure it won't make much of a difference to the number of Scottish drunks who come down to London to beg (or does excessive alcohol consumption just make you sound Scottish?)).

    2.3 is fine. Google Play Services still gets updated. Security risk? What security risk? Just don't download stuff from outside the Play Store, and don't root your phone if you're paranoid, and you'll be safe in the sandbox. All that other stuff is lost on most people (where most people = people who'll surf, email, phone, text, facebook etc).

    Exactly. And if you're getting one of these to play with, you've probably already got another one. And if you dont...well, these are going to seriously suck, just like all the other cheap Android tablets/phones have always sucked, with in the area of screen size, resolution, old version of android, insufficient ram to ensure speedy (even for the price) operation, crap build quality so you have to go through 2 or 3 to get a working one, etc. So you're going to regret it.

    Sure. There are many people working to ensure that people in developing countries have access to education, water, immunisation etc. And now, uh..mobile phone? I mean, let's be honest - that's usually done for profit, so that the guys in suits get money, and so that the company sticks around long enough to fix the inevitable bugs, release a second version etc.

    I predict they'll never be available in the US/UK for anything like that little money. There'll be taxes and import duty and this and that and....and it'll end up being 3 times that, and for the money you'd be able to buy something which less horrific performance. There's no profit in this for anyone - why bother in the first place?

    Only because that write-up above is so poor. There's no reason it couldn't have been explained properly, is there? I know we don't have proper writers working at Slashdot but surely there's is some sort of a functioning brain between "first-time submitter #239402394032" and the "publish this story" button, otherwise we might as well just be reading whatever pops on on twitter with a #0-day-news tag.

    That's an amusing comment, given that one of these competitors is Microsoft!

    People don't have memories. Nobody cares about Sony's past, or Microsoft's, etc. There's a console out...they want a console...they're going to buy a console from somebody...they're not going to rule out Steam because it was late a few or so ago, are they? I mean...why would they? It doesn't make any sense.

    I'd imagine if the only evidence was a photo then it would be thrown out as circumstantial. People look a lot more alike than fingerprints.

    I don't. Not that I rate those other artists, but because - like the Simpsons post series 7 - he'd have done some great, great work. I don't think less of someone because they peaked and went downhill; it detracts nothing from the best stuff.

    1984 is to Brave New World like the Beatles are to the Monkees. Brave New World always struck me as a little too "earnest", for want of a better word. If you're going to say something, say it. Don't create a symbol/metaphor for something. That's lame. I like the honesty of commercials from the 50's and 60's where they show you the product and describe it, rather than current ads which show you a lifestyle the advertisers think you'd like and associate that with the product (hence jet planes zooming around your bathroom in razor ads etc).

    Before she started down this route of getting a PHD and all that follows, did she investigate subsequent employment, or did she just assume that people would offer her great jobs/throw money at her? (Don't take this sarcastically, I'm just curious about some of the things people study and their expectations. It's seems like a variation on the Cargo Cult).

    Isn't `bring the game into disrepute` a reason? It's their rules...they can have any clause they like. He might not mind not caring what people think of his outdated mentality, but the sport suffers if people boycott it, or if it's embarrassing to have to admit you are involved with it, if for no other reason.

    Why do you get charged more when you are abroad, roaming, than a native would get charged? It's the same data, and I can't imagine it's complicated for networks to log usage and bill accordingly. Often you're on the same companies network in both countries!

    It's one of the many reasons i'm on a pay-as-you-go tariff; at least that way I just get cut off when I run out of allowance, and not return home to a comedy £2000 bill for a few minutes usage spread over a few days.
