  1. Major oversight...... on AMI Introduces 'Trusted Computing' BIOS · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just thought about this a bit more and...
Say someone is running a certain email program
and a 12 year old writes a script to exploit this mail program
his exploit does nothing more than pad the kernel with garbage
The original hapless individual shuts his computer down
When he powers it up the next day, it refuses to boot as the kernel has been modified
since his hard disk is encrypted he can't retrieve any of his data from the system, nor can the tech he brought it to...
So he smiles, reinstalls and rebuilds all the work he just lost, as a backup isn't anything he ever thought of making.

Give this a year or two and we'll see IBM make a push to bring reliable, centrally maintained machines into workplaces.

These products need to be labeled as "Non User Serviceable Supplies" when they are displayed for sale. This would inform the potential customer that they must purchase all replacement and support goods for this item through the manufacturer.

I'm not saying I agree with them, just that if they wish to conduct business in an underhanded fashion, consumers should know about it upfront.

I think I may go back to a dot matrix printer for most of my junk printing, yeah they can be slow with graphics (I don't print graphics too often), but you don't need to worry about paper for sometime if you buy the big box. A reinker for the cartages is fairly cheap as well.

Eh, I haven't verified myself, but three people seem to have corrected me on the PA-RISC thing, my initial understanding back in the day was that the main processor on the next gen amiga was to be PA-RISC.
I also remember the AGA Amigas had that ATT dsp on the prototypes, that went vapor in production.
I wouldn't think the 'business' side would ever let Haynie drive the cost of the machine up that far by having a PA-RISC chip as a coprocessor is laughable. Commodore cut anything that would be cutting edge, or even anything that would cost a few more cents period, the quality of the AGA amigas sucked balls.

I am aware of the phase5 thing, and it's stupid and was expensive, a power-pc co-processor?? I read about it before I abandoned my Amiga and it seemed like a big hack. If the entire OS could have been ported to the PowerPC and divorced from the custom chips, I would have stayed with it, but the custom chips were showing their age a year after they were released, granted you had to spend more money on the PC and Mac side, but it was no longer as big of a deal as it was in the '80s.

In any case, the new Amiga has something to do with Java, I have no clue why you would run it, it doesn't seem to offer anything my PC doesn't do now, it solves a problem no one has. Yes I know the classic one is still around, but where are you going to get the hardware to run it on and for what price, and who's left willing to pay?

As far as Gateway goes, I thought the Amiga had a chance with them, but then I realized I've never recommended a Gateway, or liked any I have worked on.

It takes more money than Amiga, Inc. has to make their plan work, the original Amiga nearly went bankrupt before making it, if it wasn't for some clever dealing it would've been an Atari.

I just wish they would bury the F@#$%$# company so all of us ex users could have a proper funeral for the machine that rocked in the 80's.

With all the dot coms that have folded someone is bound to have a cheap hand scanner.
But on second thought, a better solution would be to keep it simple.
A certain amount of supervision will be required no matter your solution, so this is what I suggest.
I'd use a burgular alarm with the doors always armed and a keypad with a shroud around it (to prevent looking) and a big siren, this way if the door is opened, you'd know, there would be no incentive to play with the keypad if he could get out. My guess is that he can learn over time if he can watch numbers entered in a keypad and repeat the action, with a loud siren and big commotion I'd think it would eventually provide a deterrant, which is what I'd want, volentary cooperation would be a good thing.
The other thing would be a dog collar thing as another reader suggested, but your child would carry the transmitter around and when he left the perimeter it would set a siren off since the dog collar that normally would shock the dog would be on the kitchen counter with a siren or something else rigged up that would alert you, this would be a failsafe, in the event he did get outside.
You have a really tough problem, and a handicap of anyone in the family will always affect everyone else. Your other kids may not understand at the moment, but when they do they will be proactive about keeping him safe.

So in order to beat the DMCA you need to give up your right to ownership of the code. Hehe, extract stream sucks as do all the other free tools anyhow, recreating them in a haiku would be fun. The other thing is the difficulty involved, it keeps those not inclined to extract from extracting, unlike napster, which my mom used, I stopped by with it and installed it, she figured it out!
One more thing, military grade encryption on the tivo??? The stream is encrypted and decrypted on the same box, everything you need to decrypt the stream is on the box, not to mention disabling the encryption on the series 1 tivo involves the command dd (on the DirecTiVo). Tough encryption!
Laws like the DMCA protect everyone, not just the mega-corporations with the cash to enforce it!
