  1. QuickTime + Flip4Mac + Perian = no need for VLC on Month of Apple Fixes · · Score: 1

Many people forget that they have to add codecs to WMP on Windows to get it to run videos encoded with alternate video codcs (DivX, XviD, etc.).

QuickTime for Mac OS X can be similarly augmented:

Simply download Flip4Mac (free) for WMV support and Perian (free) for support for just about everything else.

    No need for VLC.

Yes, I can order a USB cable (and did). Yes, I can find a tarball out there that will allow me to hack my phone to re-enable bluetooth. But in the end, I'm a consumer who just wants his damn phone to work without having to hack yet another item.

When my friend's Cingular Bluetooth phone immediately was able to mount on his Mac and drag & drop files to/from the phone, I looked at my Verizon phone and just wanted to throw it in the trash.

When my Verizon plan is up this spring, I plan on switching to Cingular.

Bonus that any upcoming Apple iPhone will likely be Cingular-friendly.

This is a win-win for everyone, really:

    1. Such a delayed release would be the ultimate proof of monopoly. Stifling an entire continent. Courts will churn. MS heads will roll.

    2. Delayed EU Vista means at least part of the world's computer infrastructure will work when Vista's new DNS scheme allegely will break teh Interweb everywhere else. (I don't have the link... google it)

Far nicer than the political ads that are swamping televisions this election year.

It makes the PC look productive and serious, instead of the slacker Mac OS X.

Actually, it points out what people already know: Corporations and businesses use Windows PCs. Windows for many is Word and Excel. And almost everyone who has used a Windows PC at work has hated it at some point. Showing you a desktop after logging in but not being able to do anything for an additional 30-120 seconds. Programs with odd names performing illegal operations and offering them the change to debug, only to do nothing useful. And so on.

The Mac is being shown in the light of being a computer for your home life, far away from spreadsheets and Active Directory, where your photos, home movies, and music play a much stronger role, and showing ease-of-use for doing nice things with that media.

Windows runs fine out of the box, there's virtually no advanced configuration after you've installed it.

Remember that the majority of new Windows PC owners buy an OEM machine and can barely plug in all the color-coded cables. They turn it on and the Windows setup wizard starts as you said. Fine. Now your OEM machine is detecting the 3-in-one inkjet-scanner-fax printer that came bundled free with the computer. Windows is now pompting them to install three items it has detected. Each one throwing up the New hardware wizard. Not to mention the computer's system image was from 4 months ago, so they need to download 55MB of patches on their dial-up connection in order to be "safe".

Now, the only support calls I get are about simple things like how to make a photo-slideshow into a DVD or what camcorder they should buy.

    Missing Software:
    • No iLife. That alone is worth $79, and no consumer-level app available for Windows comes close.
    • No true Speech Recognition. Gonna have to buy a third party application for that.
    • No Save anything as PDF option. Time to buy Acrobat or a a free OSS program with a horrible UI.
    • No native DVD burning application. Gonna have to buy Easy Media Creator or Nero just to burn a Data DVD (or a free OSS program with a horrible UI).

    Maintenance:
    • The Dell will require A/V software & DAT subscription. Even if you use a free A/V client, you'll still have the resultant performance drag.
    • The Dell will be preloaded with Trials and Spyware that will never fully uninstall. However much you feel your free time is worth per hour, multiply that hourly rate by the amount of time it will take you to remove the preloaded crap and spyware and running frequent anti-spyware scans.
    • The Dell will need to be patched religiously. Another $$$ for personal time lost.

I'm sure many traditionally-raised folks might see this as immature or selfish, but it all depends on the point of view.

I guess this means I should hire a lawyer and demand that Sony send me a re-engineered Cassette-based Walkman to replace the one I used in 1985 so that I can have one with a volume limiter. Perhaps I can say that it has already caused two decades of hearing loss...

Maybe I can sue TicketMaster for not giving me earplugs and a warning letter when buying concert tickets for indoor/front row/near-the-speakers seats...
