The problem with some sort of VAT or GST is that local govts often use sales tax to fund local projects. Where I live, in the past few years sales tax has gone from 7.0% and will soon be at 7.5% because we need the money to build new water intake lines from the lake and more higways. If we couldn't adjust the local sales tax, we'd be screwed.

Its a degree of flexability our county most definately needs.

  5. Re:welcome to Nevada (perhaps, but NOT INDIA) on California Considering More Internet Taxes · · Score: 1

FYI, Nevada has in the worst fiscal shape in the whole of the US, even worse than California. And besides, jobs will never move too much to that state because its a hell hole. They would never be able to attract the talent they are looking for. Some REALLY want to eat at other restaurants besides casinos and Applebees.

Well, the restaurants arguement is right. I'll give you that. Fine dining outside of a casino is hard to find...

But NV does have no corporate or personal income taxes. Thats its strongest point. One of the things that made me proud was that Vegas was home to Westwood Studios. At least until a few weeks ago when EA decided to close down their center here in vegas.

Its weakest point is public education. Parents who treat schools like daycare centers, give teachers no respect, and then complain about their kid not learning.

  6. Re:So stop voting for higher taxes. on Giant Sucking Noise · · Score: 1

First, companies arent leaving. The average IT person's job is leaving. And its not that companies are getting taxed to death, its that they want profit. MORE profit than last year. Regardless of what it does to people or the economy. I'm glad I work for someone where profit isnt a motive (a nonprofit quasi-governmental organization). But hey, maybe IT salaries should go down a little. Maybe programming isnt an 70-80K/yr job. I'm happy w/ 60K.

On a smaller scale, we are seeing people leave California due to high taxes and the cost of living.

In California's case, they're all coming to Vegas. And they're pricing me out of the market for my first home. Home prices go up about 10%-15% a year here, thanks to So Cal people selling their 2000 sq ft house for 300K (and having a good amount of equity in it) and getting a 3000 sq house here for the same price (or pay for a 200K home in 75% cash). Their wage might be 30% less, but they have enough equity in their expensive Cali home to pay for a large part of their vegas home.

  7. Interactive ads vs Product placement on Advergames · · Score: 3, Insightful

This seems to be the key difference to me. If an advertisement uses a interactive means to get me interesting (keep me oocupied?) to learn about their product, then I dont expect to pay anything for it. Why? Because I'll be damned if I have to start paying twice to buy something (once to learn about it, and once to buy it).

Product placement in videogames has been around for a while, the most recent example I'm framiliar with is Tony Hawk 4. Ads dont dominate and they are just billboards. I dont get extra points for completing a 900 while drinking my mountain dew.

Then there is the middle ground. This is where game companies whore out themselves to advertisers, a la Sims Online, where eating at McDonalds increases your happiness (which is an absolutely horrible message to send to youth). I hope the gaming community doesnt support these titles.

My ISP does this, and it prevents me from using my own domain to send out mail. Since my ISP wants to fuck me in the ass to the tune of $10 *per month* for DNS/rDNS, I use register.com's DNS services (included in the domain reg price) to point to my static IP. But I cant change the rDNS. They refuse to change my rDNS unless I pay them. So if you rDNS my mailserver, it comes back to my ISP's name (foo.bar.cox.net) instead of mail.foo.bar. So a few ISPs wont accept mail from my mailserver.

Why not engineer your stuff to last only 5 years or less. And if units moved is your metric, then you do better to make the units with a shorter life. As long as its not obscenely short (ie less that two years), consumers arent going to care after about three years is something craps out on them (assuming it didnt cost a lot of money).

To me it comes down to this, Americans have an average of $5000+ in debt. They are willing to buy buy buy and deal with the consequences later. In this case, the consequences are the unit having a shorter lifespan for being so cheap.
