I don't know a step by step per se. But you easily select to install an SMTP server during the installation of Mandrake, or install one later. I use Postfix for SMTP server and Qpopper for POP3 server.

You can find guides to configure each on the web, get a free dynamic dns service (dyndns.org is my favorite ) to do DNS for the domain you can get for free from them or for a domain you own. Besides that, if you have a shared IP (NAT )for your home network, you will need to map port 25 SMTP and port 110 POP3 to your internal server.

Sorry this isn't step by step or complete, but it should get you started. Google, linuxquestions.org, and tldp.org are your friends. :)

How did you accomplish this? How about your IT staff, did they quickly get upto speed on Linux or did you have to rotate Windows people out and bring in employees with a 'nix background. Excuse me for so many questions, but I am sure there are more people out there who would like to get some ideas on how to migrate their company over to Linux from Windows.

Hmm, I was pretty hardcore in 2000-2001, after using Windows from version 1.0 up to 2000, getting my MCSE, and getting a job as a full-time Windows network administrator. But, in 2002 I started looking at other OS's, longing for something that gave me more control, more stability, wasn't so insecure, and didn't require so many patches to remain "current". Anyhow, played with FreeBSD first, loved everything except for the lack of hardware support, so I played with Linux( running it in VMWare for a few months ), and by September of 2002 I was ready to make the switch.

It does take time to get used to, but the stability, freedom, and the sheer number of applications out there hooked me big time. I have come to the conclusion that asking someone to spend at least as much time learning Linux as they did learning Windows before judging if it is the OS for them or not. I was dual-booting a lot for games until a few weeks ago, and now I even got that problem solved. So, put some effort into it, don't try making it your main box right away as you will probably get frustrated and give up. Instead, do dual boot, virtual machine, or a cheap separate computer to experiment and learn on. Need help? Web sites like linuxquestions.org and tldp.org have answers to most questions, I haven't been impressed with linux books, but the "man" command ( get it? "the man" ) command has gotten me quick help when I was in a bind.

I hope this helps put things into perspective a bit.

Most likely I will sign up with them again in the near future.

Oh, and not having to return movies by a certain date was a godsend for me. I have a busy schedule and would often be out of town on short notice business call when a movie was due, and pay out the yin-yang for past due fees. With Netflix I never had to worry about that. I switched to Linux after running it in a VMWare virtual machine for a few months. I still have my
workstation dual-boot with Windows XP just in case I need it. But then I haven't booted into Windows in a month and a half, and that was only while I was installing it ( for the 'just in case' scenario ).

Anyhow, geek inside of me is what brought me to try out Linux. The stability, freedom, and choice of Linux are what made me stay. Just remember how long it took you to learn Windows, and then give Linux at least that much time before you toss it aside.

For comparisons sake, I used Windows first back in 1990, and got very good with it by 1994. I have almost used Linux for a year and I already feel comforable with it.

Ok, two points. First, I don't think of Blizzard when I see a name ending with "craft". Instead, I think of the war as the "art of" or "way of" doing/working with something. Like "Stonecraft" would mean the way to work with stone (stonemasonry is the proper term, I think ), but I hope you see what I mean. Another way to interpret it would be "a
craft for traveling through a medium", with the medium specified in the first part of the word, such as "watercraft", "spacecraft", etc.

Second point, it looks fairly obvious why the project was named "freecraft". It was to denote that this was an opensource (free) version of WarCraft, but you can't just copy someone's idea verbatim without at least asking for permission or giving them credit. Well, I am talking about my personal criteria, anyhow. On the other hand, I think it's wrong to prevent people who want to make an improved version of an old (read "dead" ) project of yours on their own. Especially if they were courteous enough to ask. Like, "it looks like you arent' working on this anymore, can I pick up where you left off?".

Now, if they had called their program "FreeCraft" and the name made some kind of sense, like being about freeing people from captivity, for example, then I could see where Blizzard's argument wouldn't hold any water.

There are standards and then there are "de-facto" standards. An Internet standard is an open, well-documented set of criteria that coders can code
against create a standards compliant app. The reason for this is to ensure that any application that is compliant with the standard will give the same result as any other application coded to the same standard.

A "de-facto" standard is an implementation ( way of doing something ) that has become to be an expected feature of an application in a particular
market only because it is popular. The problem with this is that not everyone may implement it in the exact same way, cause unpredictable results, and in the end making the application user's experience "worse."

Anyhow, I stopped using Internet Exploder a year or so ago because Mozilla's way outclassed it as far as feature sets go ( popup blocker, tabbed browser interface, cookie management, and more ) that weren't standards at the time, but other browsers have caught on this is something we want more than features such as "mouse gestures"( which seems to be a dead idea at the moment ).

Hopefully that clears things up for you as far as standards go. As far as your other comments ( linux is irrelevant, XServer sucks, etc. First, you aren't talking about Linux as it includes only the kernel.
