My bigger fear is that now they're going to be like one of those tragic African nations that has tremendous mineral or oil riches. These seem to produce dictatorships where 0.5% of the population is tremendously rich and powerful, and the other 99.5% are left penniless.
Well, I'd assume if you were the parent of an underprivileged child then you wouldn't be able to afford to live in a wealthy MA school district.
I lived in Beverly for a while in the 90's. I wouldn't call it wealthy, it's kind of average. It's an ex-mill/factory town, with some slightly poor parts and some pretty rich parts. A lot of the houses are old row-houses, for example.
If something were really, really bad for you, the evidence would be overwhelming.
How "overwhelming" the evidence is depends on several factors, including the intelligence of the person making the judgment. The wasps building nests near my house will never see an overwhelming correlation between being a risk to my kids, and dying due to Black Flag exposure that same evening.
I would think what you want for an oil cleanup is a material that is oleophilic but hydrophobic,IOW, just the opposite.
It's probably the difference between having a mop (your proposal) and a strainer (his creation). Depending on a variety of factors either one might be preferable for cleanup.
I heard on NPR that some people looking to investigate beaches were turned away by policeman and when they asked the policemen who was paying them to do that the policeman said they were off duty police officers employed by BP.
What defines the scope of authority that BP has in a sitation like this? And are there any limitations on their power?
I'm starting to think that forcing the accused (in either civil or criminal proceedings) (and later found blameless) to pay for their defense and/or court appearance is a terrible injustice within our society.
This is the kind of thing where I would really want a jury trial for a speeding ticket. But I've heard that some legal gymnastics have been used to justify making traffic courts immune from the right to trial by jury.
Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, what the justification is?
It sounds like a very possible cause thing to investigate, but it would have been nice if there were more than just two hives involved in the experiment. I hope a follow-on experiment is done with more hives.
It will be very interesting if cell phones and bees come into conflict. Considering all the jack-assery that I've seen associated with cell phones, there's a part of me that would love to see then banned.
So to date this life-giving science has been encumbered by christian fundamentalists
I think you're wrong in several important ways:
The Christians of whom you're thinking are not specifically fundamentalists. They generally also include mainline Protestants, and the Roman Catholic church (as well as fundamentalist Christians).
The Christians of whom you're speaking have generally argued against the use of embryonic stem cells, and have no objection at all to using non-embryonic stem cells. Their problem has been with the killing of embryos (whom they consider persons deserving of protection) for the sake of harvesting their body parts. In their view, the moral issues are essentially the same as if two-year olds were being killed for their stem cells.
I've tried a variety of approaches, but overall I've been happiest with just buying a NAS box.
I have a Synology DS209, and I've been very satisfied. It's a relatively cheap way to get 2 TB RAID 1 storage with really simple backup to an external USB drive. If you need more storage, you can buy NAS devices with more than just two bays.
under a bus.

Is upholding the law the same as protecting people?

I think Michael Moore needs to mak a movie about this, to shame the U.S. about its softdrink innovation pace.
He swore an oath to defent the country and uphold its Constition. He did not swear to defend the government.
I was about to give you a sensible explanation for why I phrased it that way. But after more consideration: go fuck yourself.
How do momentary stress and momentary productivity correlate in software developers?
That last thing I need is something beeping at me whenever I get in the zone.

Don't worry. Their accountants will only allow them to acquire countably infinite amounts.
Correlation does not imply causality :)

Why should they believe NGEN will be any better?
When HP took over EDS, it got the contract for the NMCI, possibly the biggest cluster-fuck in DoD history according to my Navy friends.
I wouldn't trust HP to supply soldiers with a working Timex, let alone something with telecommunications abilities.
This assumes that those with vested interests in for-profit patent prosecution can't get the laws changed.
There are some great things about this planet, but I'm occasionally stunned by the filth and villainy of some of its residents.
Careful, you're talking me into supporting the Court's decision.
But my paper topic was, "Fruity bats: population clusters in San Francisco and Provincetown, Mass.?" Academic freedom my ass...

You refer to the prophecy of The One who will bring balance to the Copyright. You believe it's this girl?
I'm concerned about any university that uses classroom attendance as a means of estimating whether or not they're learning the presented material.
