  1. Known Space ripoff on 'Rendezvous With Rama' - The Movie · · Score: 2
I've seen the movie, but never played the game. I'm curious what you are seeing, sounds interesting, I did not notice it, but wasn't trying to find similarities either...

And why has the message I'm replying to been mod'ed as -1?? Seems relatively on-topic to me.

  2. What to do: on Intellectual Property And The AIDS Crisis · · Score: 2
These people are rotting in Africa because of a morass of elitish, selfish, wannabe dicktators.

They are too concerned with making themselves look like a big man with their miserable little 'country' than to actually see that a leader of a country is no better than the least man in that country and no matter what else the stupid punk leader guy says or does, if he doesn't focus on improving the quality of life for the average human the leader is responsible, then the rest of the world will still regard the leader as a punk wannabe, or just not even know about them.

These poor near-savages (Not because the are savages, but because the environment these little suck-dictators have created around them gives them nothing to build on or even realize that they should build on...) are stuck in stagnation do to the pointless greedyness of these weird-looking, bad-dressing, dumbshits.

If we (or another country, or the UN) are really concern with the humanitarian utopia/propaganda that they are always spouting off, then the solution is to go kill/imprison/render-irrelevant (remove from 'power' somehow) these pockmarked shithead horrible 'leader' guys and put in the basis for a real system where everyone has a chance to better themselves. Create the infrastructure - communication, education, production, etc. Don't hand out any welfare type things, except maybe some healthcare for the first 3 to 5 years. Simply make it so they have a chance. If someone doesn't want to make the effort, don't make the mistakes that the US has made of creating a class of lazy do-nothings. If the lazy ones don't want to do anything, kick them out in the jungle with the zebras and hippos and see if they then learn the lesson of 'make an effort or die'. Survival of the fittest - if you don't wanna survive, you don't. Evolution in action.

I feel sorry for the people locked into living nearly like animals because their leaders have sucked all the resources, money, knowledge, basic building blocks away from them and indirectly brainwashed them into being unable to realize that there is more to life than just eaking out an existence like an animal.

But how to influence the do-haves on our side of the fence to do huge, controversial things like this for the common good of all?? That's where I feel locked into a similar non-knowledge situation of how to be a good, persuasive, charismatic 'do-er of good things'...

  3. I got sent to the principals office within seconds on The Challenger · · Score: 2

I may have the dubious honor of making the first shuttle 'joke': I was in 12th grade, we were watching the launch in english class. About 10 seconds after it blew up, I said "I wonder how long till the jokes start", which busted up the whole class and sent the teacher into a kiniption (sp?) fit who made me go to the principals office. The principal didn't do much, he even smiled a bit. I thought it was funnuy as hell at the time, but now have mixed thoughts looking back.

  5. What about Ringworld on 'Rendezvous With Rama' - The Movie · · Score: 3
Rama was incredibly cool and mind-opening when I first read it. It could be a cool movie, but I think a lot of it was trying to imagine what it would look like. Moving to the screen means instead of my view I will see someone else's view. I hope it is good.

On the other hand why has no one yet made a movie of Ringworld? Rama was the most complicated thing I could imaging until my concepts and mind were blown by Ringworld (Actual I read book #2 first - Ringworld Engineers).

I heard once that there was a plan to make it into a movie back in the early 80's but it would require so much CGI (Like 2/3's of the movie) but at the time, the technology was not there, and the cost was too high.

But now, the CGI part could probably be done in someone's home. The main cost would now be the normal filming parts.

I just got back from a gruelling two day marathon of teaching our Operations Support Group in St Louis all about our new web architecture. 5:30 AM to 7:30 PM, five classes a day. I'm not usually out of bed until 8:30 AM. I'm still braindead, but it was fun! :)

Anyone know if Konqueror in 2.0.1 finally supports SSL via a proxy server? What about major fixes to Javascript?

With Konqueror 2.0.0, I have not been able to connect to my Internet banking site due to both the inability to do SSL through a proxy server and the fact that basically no Javascript works (On pretty much any site, even super-simple Hello World applets)

Also, can it finally do - So far, when I hit a site with links that use graphics instead of text, the graphics don't show if the graphics are .png format.

Konqueror 2.0.0 sure looks good, I hope that 2.0.1 take care of those problems. If not, I'll just have to wait until it gets there. Till then, Netscape 6 is good enough.

Netscape 4.7x, Konqueror 2.0 can't display half the stuff out there. NS4.7x is so slow and ugly it's depressing to look at (Form buttons are so amateur-looking it's pathetic)

Konqueror 2.0 can't even do HTTPS through a proxy or deal with an image inside of a form button.

Opera can't even stay running for two minutes (Sure, it's supposedly 'beta', but I wouldn't even count it as beta quality, something that crashes that quickly should be kept in the development area longer than "Wow, we got it to compile, lets release it as a beta")

With NS6 I can finally have a browser on Linux that I can use for pretty much anything.Maybe once Konqueror 2.0 is actually finished I'll actually use that, but for now I'm sticking with NS6, so what if it drinks memory, I've got enough to handle it.

C'mon, give me a break. This is such a lame outlook on life. The only people who have made a 'culture' out of games are total lamers who can't think of anything better to do. Wow, just what I want to be, part of an 'enlightened' culture of fat arthritic snotnosed boring morons.

Sure, I play videogames from time to time, even code my own games, but give me a break. If your ONLY pastime is playing videogames to the point where you consider it a 'culture', then you need to get out more. Rarely do you get laid or paid playing videogames, unless you are some kind of fat lazy fag-boy who gets paid for getting his ass greased while playing video games.

Videogames are great, but it's no more a dominant culture than people who play Monopoly.

If drugs are illegal because they cause harm to your body, then shouldn't videogames? I think a potsmoker does less long term body damage than a fat lazy slob that does nothing but sit on his fat ass and press buttons.
