Blame either the makers of PockerPC or the makers of Outlook for that. You'd almost think they're conspiring to prevent people from being able to switch.

But, you can't conspire with yourself! See, e.g., COPPERWELD CORP. v. INDEPENDENCE TUBE CORP., 467 U.S. 752 (1984) ("We hold that Copperweld and its wholly owned subsidiary Regal are incapable of conspiring with each other for purposes of 1 of the Sherman Act.") http://www.justia.us/us/467/752/case.html

"Offshore to a democratic, (relatively) moral nation like Germany, though, and they'll prosecute an IP thief."

But of course there's no point to offshoring to Germany, as their labor costs are just as high as ours in the United States are. Perhaps India, with its Western traditions from its time as a British colony, is a more realistic choice that would somewhat address these political concerns?

The Intel Inside campaign dates to 1991... but the Pentium brand dates to 1993 [see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium], and has been used to label multiple generations of processors now. When will Intel stop labelling its processors Pentium and come up with a new brand name?

The Six Flags offer is actually very generous and very sensible. The hurricane refugees are being relocated to the Houston Astrodome. (See http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/08/31/national /main808603.shtml) Six Flags Astroworld is across the parking lot from the Astrodome. Rather than having a bunch of bored kiddies sitting in an empty old football stadium for the fifth day in a row, they can enjoy the theme park and take their minds off things for a spell.

Assuming than one person in a million is a terrorist (ridiculously high, I know)

I disagree. www.census.gov says there are now just over 293 million people in the United States now. Do you really believe that only 293 of them are terrorists? I think one person in a million is a very low estimate.

  8. Re:Not such a bad idea.... on LOTR The Musical! · · Score: 1

    Lindsayt,

I didn't notice the date, but I'd heard that story before, and it is confirmed elsewhere online.

"It is not the first time film makers have tried to bring the Lord of the Rings to the screen. The Beatles were desperate to do a movie of the book, with Paul playing Frodo, Ringo as Sam, John as Gollum and George as Gandalf, but the rights were bought up for what became Ralph Bakshi's disastrous 70s cartoon version, which ended halfway through the story when the producers ran out of money." -- http://film.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/Guardian/0,4 029,333863,00.html

    and
" The Fellowship of the Fab Four? According to an interview given by director Peter Jackson to the Wellington, New Zealand "Evening Post", the Beatles wanted to film "The Lord of the Rings." "It was something John Lennon was driving and JRR Tolkien still had the film rights at that stage, but he didn't like the idea of the Beatles doing it, so he killed it," Jackson told the "Evening Post". In the Beatles version, John would have played Gollum, with George Harrison as Gandalf, Paul McCartney as Frodo, and Ringo Starr as Frodo's best friend, Sam." -- http://www.zap2it.com/movies/details/1,1295,28574, 00.html

    Among other sources.

    I think it's legit.

  9. Not such a bad idea.... on LOTR The Musical! · · Score: 5, Informative

This is not such a bad idea -- it might actually work out. The Beatles considered doing a musical adaptation of the LOTR many years ago.

As conceived, John Lennon would have played Gollum, Paul McCartney would have played Frodo, George Harrison would have played Gandalf, and Ringo Starr would have played Sam.

http://www.hellomagazine.com/2002/03/29/beatles/ has more information (and proves that I'm no troll...)

If well executed, a LOTR musical *could* be quite enjoyable.

"somewhat technical dialog that takes place in the movie"

I had no trouble with this personally.

BUT... my friend, who is a non-native English speaker, was totally lost at the end of the movie, as an important character (who won't be named to avoid spoilers) speaks in so much jargon and so quickly that he is virtually incomprehensible.

  12. MATRIX RELOADED -- opening night on Review: Matrix: Reloaded · · Score: 3, Informative

Just saw MATRIX RELOADED on opening night. The theater was packed, despite multiple showings -- 10, 10:10, 10:30... The audience seemed to greatly enjoy the movie.

The action was as good as advertised. The actors acquited themselves well. As expected, CGI was greatly improved from the original, particularly for the "real world" shots.

BUT... the movie didn't make much sense -- it was kind of like USUAL SUSPECTS, but without the basis in reality on which to grab hold.

Go see it... but don't expect to understand it until you see the third one, too.
