As with the true spirit of Open Source, Free as in speech here is the analogy you need to remember:
There are 3 knobs an a televisions set to allow the user control:
1) if you do not like what you here turn down the volume.
2) if you do not like what you see change the channel.
3) if you like neither 1 or 3 turn the damned thing off and get some fresh air outside.
So, if Slashdot irrates you that bad, and probably other sites too, turn your pc off and go read some real information about what is happening in the world so you can get a clue before returning and posting.........
not *flaimbait* but just a simple minded Bushite.

Just how do you think M$ got to where they are today?
hint, hint...it was not from playing nice.
So is rape ok since the sex was good [or is that you got sex]
Lets see if you can go rape everyone on your block and then *get off* the charges.
They have been found guilty as charged and now have not complied with the penality.
What happens if you get a DUI [drunk driving] along with killing someone in the accident?
Think you can tell the judge you just do not feel like going to jail

what FSCKING rock did you crawl out from under.
Nothing less than 10 minutes to install SimplyMEPIS on any machine that you can get 'dohze 98/2k to run on all the way up to my AMD64 3500+, 1gig, Radeon 700 PCIe, dual 200g SATA.
Jesus fscking Christ.....and running Quake and other things.....how about teaching kids 4-16 how to really "run" a computer instead.
talking about "zealots".....na, just a 'dohze idiot.

What I did with the kids at a local college several years ago were labs, not on the language but the concepts. Out of 3 semisters of 1-15 each time not one was a programmer, and why they were even in CS majors is a mystery to me.
Lab 1:
1-plastic table cloth
1-loaf of bread
1-jar peanut butter
1-jar grape jelly
knive, and lots of paper towels
I am a robot and they are to tell [program] me how to make a PBJ sandwich. After ripping the bread open [flying everwhere], getting jelly open, bread in one hand knife in other we got jelly on the bread [and everthing else] then they agreed for me to put the bread down.....turned hand over and right down to the table jelly first ---splat--- you should have seen their faces.
Lab 2
1) I am blind
2) have on laced shoes that are untied
3) tell me how to tie my shoes
If you can learn to do this one you need to sign up to be the next leader at the democratic convention........
Explain to them that they are already a programmer. They do it every day. Asked class what is the last thing they do at night. Pray, brush teeth, etc. Nope wrong answer......
If Today in [Sun,Mon,Tue,Wed,Thu] then
set AlarmClock OFF
else
set AlarmClock ON
[nothing worse than that *($#@ going of at 5:30am on Saturday morning]
Get my reasoning here.......
Kids today have no clue......
FYI began programming on a Sperry/Univac back in 1975, flip the data switches, flip the memory switches, press write, read next line of hand written/edited code, lather, rinse and repeat ad nausem. You can take that Jiva C-- crap and stuff it, there is nothing like hand optimized ASM.

A few weeks ago I visited a friend a one of the four area hospitals, I now know were I don't want to be sick at. Each room on his floor had some type of monitoring equipment outside the door in the hall and was running standard Win2K Pro.
Any OS that can run J2EE can run your app, but if you do it in DotNOT then your are fusked.
To the opening statement I prefer a specialized piece of equipment run a specialized OS and software.
BTW, I worked in the past with a company that produced a machine that stamped out metal sheets for parts moving 5 feet/second. The end user programers [engineers] often wrote bad that jammed the sheet clamps into the tool turret, requiring a 15 ton puller to remove it from the tool turret.
So yes, any OS/app can fail but I do not want any application that is mission critical [including privacy under HIPAA, which I now am involved with} monitoring/controloing anything mission critical or private running anything generic from Microsoft.
just 3 days after Merck anounced the recall of Vioxx 5 lawyers here in Corpus Christi, TX were on the 5:30am [drive time] news.
One has already been slapped by the others because he went and a telephone number 1-800-##V-IOXX. Really dumb they didn't sue him.
The only winners of any litigation are the lawyers...period.

4 years ago I had my -Firestone Disk-, 3-4 vertabrae disk blew up and created intense pain.
Anyway the best surgean here did the work.
When I left the office, after scheduling the surgery, I asked him about how much so I could prepare for my 20% co-payment from insurance.
His answer.....I don't know - what ever your insurance pays.
Well I lucked out.
Hospital including all materials and 1.5 day stay $15,000us.
Surgeans bill ----- $10,000us
Scheduled at 7:30am I asked at 7:35 talking to nurse where he was and when this gets going.
A voice on the otherside said I'm here and then the -sleepy doc- didn't even tell me to count, just you'll feel something cold and about halfway up to the elbow zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
At 8:55am the doc came out and told my parents he was done all well and good.
At 11:30 I was talking on the way back to the room and raady for lunch.
Moral to the story.....
about $4,000 of the $10k was for a Lloyd's of London insurance policy for this procedure on me.
So $4,000/hr is not bad considering his practice/office/employees/insurance/etc
[I know about LoL policies because I work for 911 administration and we get $1mil policies when needed]
Just my $0.075us and I don't want to start a rant on side topics of this -- just my last experience.
Try FABREEZE
also
goto grocery store and purchase
20 pound bag of charcoal
only the plain stuff, not hickory or anything else
pulverize it with a hammer to a fine powder
[you may need more bags]
remove the floppy and cd drives
put tape over any connector ps2, usb, etc
now bury the entire PC in it
inside the box and all _covered_
leave it for a week or 2
remove pc
blow out all powder and reassemble
spray with Fabreeze and let dry......lather, rinse, repeat as needed.....
Aida32 does not need to installed after the first install.
just copy the folder to a cd and run the exe.

Friday I got PCLinuxOS and tonight [speedy download] MandrakeMove.
BOTH ARE CRIPPLED......
System Soyo DragonLite, AMD 2600+, 512m PC2700, Maxtor 80g 133, Asus 56xx [MX-440 dual head].
PCLinuxOS leave main monitor [one Win2k boots to] with 8 blue lines at the bottom and nothing on 2nd monitor.
MandrakeMove booted but to the 2nd monitor.
Does not correctly see the VIA 82xx LAN [on board] and will not do DHCP to SMC 7004VBR.
Crashed out several times after tring to config network with KDE can not initialize DCOP [or some line like that] and no applications will run, not even MdkMove configure.
PCLinux worked at the office in a FIC-13, AMD 2700+, MX-400 video, 512 PC2700, Maxtor 80g 133. Had to monkey the net config and default gateway 192.168.10.1 [same as here].
Will see in the morning how MdkMove works there.
NT was given something like a "G5" security rating, BUT is was not attached to any network what so ever. Lot of good that certification did as Win2k and XPee were then built from this so called "secure base".
The "system" is the problem not the programmers.
Testing and certifing software for it designed and useful purpose, which EULAs negate, would be a starting point.
Also I am sitting here on a RoadRunner connection using a Motorola SurfBoard modem. Why did I have to spend $45 for a SMC 7004VBR to secure it when 1-2 chips in the modem would have taken care of a lot of issues [log is showing 4-6 denied attacks every 5-10 minutes].
I wrote the mapping application used by the combined city/county 911 here on the South Texas Gulf Coast.
In the rural areas out of the city some towers have a reach of 30 miles and is *omni-directional* so you should call you minister first and be prepared to KYAGB [kiss you ass good bye].
The 911 center receives about 1000 calls per day.
70% [700] are cell phones in the city.
Of these 100% have tower address and sector so you are within a 1-3 mile 1/3 of the pie area and that is mapped visibily with the other 2/3 lightly showing.
60% [420] of the 700 have valid longitude/latitude with an error factor and confidence.
If the error is 100 meters the application puts a cirlce with the radius of the error around the cell phone symbol, a if it is greater than 1000 meters it reverts to the "tower address" which is always the address contained in the call data.
How does GPS effect this for the newer and unsuprisingly more expensive cell phones work.
My Sprint phone has a scope crosshair [plus inside a circle] showing when the system is getting good location values.
GPS is used to validate the cellco's tower triangulation of the phone since GPS requires visibility of the birds.
All towers are being equiped with GPS, so this provides a "software" differential as the exact location of the tower is known and the current reading is adjusted so the triangulation is more accurate.
how does GPS not help.
If you are in the house, turn the phone on, put it in your pocket/purse, get in the car and ride around then take it out to report a wreck or your own problem, chances are there is not a lock from the birds for the first 20+ seconds [typical GPS receiver standards]. 911 [here in the US] only receives the lat/lon when the call is placed.
Your Privacy.
By law, this information is recorded [Automatic Location Identification - ALI] along with the voice conversation, and retained by law for at least 30 days and up to 3 years, depending on the various laws and policy/precedures of the agency receiving the call.
Many stupid people have received the "Darwin Awards" for calling 911 during an incident, like using an exhaust vent and getting stuck while trying to rob a business after hours.
I you want your privacy then NEVER CALL 911, only call the appropriate agency's 10 digit administrative line [the one in the phone book]. Your call will still probably be recorded [we record all lines except for the "private" one investigators use] and in some cases the regular phones might even have "Caller ID" as provided by the phone company in use which, so the number you called from is recorded in the the records management system. TCYA [to cover yours ass] a pay phone becomes some what anonymous but you might have been recorded on the security cameras in use around the business where the pay phone is located and associating you with the call.
In conclusion -- YOU HAVE NO PRIVACY..............
Tracking a phone is provided by some 3rd party providers.
It is not in place in the US as it is in the UK and else where.
A few years back I read about one company [UK] charging like $1 for initial location and $2 for each minute of tracking.
me thinks RIM should tell Vista, *similar technology* this ,,!,,
If the Dept of Justice accepts your PR crap [lies] then everyone should.
