But it does seem like a layer of obscurity to what should otherwise be a secure port. What if someone is sniffing your network? Unlike an encrypted password, they could easily replay this sequence and gain access to your "hidden" port.
You make a very good point. Many people can list off Larry Wall, ESR, RMS, and Linus off the top of their head, but don't know the first thing about the principles in the Apache project. Seems to be a nice counter-point to ESR's ego currency as a motivation for OSS. Apache is in my mind the most successful OSS project.
Guess its time to switch to a new search engine. I can't see how an IPO is good for the company. Good for the employees, but not good for the company.

It would be helpful if you posted a list of what you used your computer for. If it is surfing the 'net, writing simple word docs, etc, you can probably use Linux to accomplish the same tasks, and have it supported.
I don't think you could replicate this on OpenBSD. Ever tried running MySQL + PHP + Apache on it? Don't. Leave it as your firewall/NAT and let Linux or FreeBSD do the heavy lifting.

If I saw RMS using anything but EMACS I would be very surprised.
To have some actual technical discussion on a site that is supposed to be filled with nerds, instead of the same tired jokes about martians.

Kudos.
I think this is much more about bored scientists.
So do you burn it or sniff it?

XFree86 was the Cathedral, now it looks like they are recognizing that the Bazaar model of development may be more applicable to their software.
