  1. Re:Ethics on Mitchell Kapor Leaves Groove Over TIA · · Score: 1, Insightful
The physicists in the Hiroshima era didn't seem to have any choice but to make the bomb, because it was a race. If they didn't make the bomb, first, then a nation hostile to the United States might get it done first. That put a lot of pressure on the physicists.

In this case, though, there doesn't seem to be any race, so there shouldn't be as much pressure to just walk away.

  2. March 18th... Next Tuesday. on SETI@Home 2nd Look at Possible Hits · · Score: -1, Troll
The Arecibo Observatory will work for three and a half days, starting March 18, to revisit the candidate signals identified by SETI@home users.

There doesn't seem to be anything new in this article in comparison to the previous slashdot article. The only difference seems to be that SETI has decided when to actually do this analysis (which I've quoted above).

  3. Re:A cold day in... on New Windows Worm Inching Around Internet · · Score: -1, Redundant

In this case, the real problem is that people didn't see the 1995 movie: 'Hackers'. Doesn't everyone already know that the three most common passwords are: "god", "sex", and "love" ? It looks like those names are in the password list used by this virus ;-). That movie wasn't completely useless! (yes it was)

I was particularly interested in that use of Tcl, so I searched the web for more info, and all I could find was this document. Any more info would be appreciated!

  6. Record labels will be running Napster. on New Legit Napster Service Coming · · Score: 1, Interesting
She added that the company was in discussions with the five largest record labels -- Vivendi Universal's Universal Music Group; Sony Music; AOL Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Music Group; Bertelsmann AG; and EMI Group Plc -- to license their music.

The sad thing is, the only real way to make a Napster service legit is to make it be a thin front-end to the big record labels. Who will really be setting the prices for Napster? If the record companies allow Napster to run this service, then will they allow there to be competitors to Napster? I doubt it, unless they are forced to by the government.

  7. Non-digital actors get a lot of help, too. on Digital Movies, Analog Oscars · · Score: 4, Interesting
While we are debating whether Andy Serkis was an actor portraying Gollum, I thought I'd throw another question into the mix. What is acting? If an actor does the same scene 34 times, and the movie editor picks a different 2 seconds out of each of those takes to create a 68 second scene, should the actor get the credit, alone?

Back in the old days, there wasn't nearly as much editing done in the movies, so actors really had to "act". Now-a-days, good movie editors can make the worst child actors in the world look like geniuses. Just nip and tuck out all the legitimate bad acting, and you got yourself a "Best Actor" nomination.

The point is, in 2003, even the non-digital actors are getting a lot of help.

I wonder what Isaac Newton would have done if someone would have introduced him to slashdot while he was at college? Would he debated 'what a planet was' ? Or denied that someone was a woman because they used a certain kind of smiley? Maybe. He might have used it as a diversion just to get him through some tough times. Geniuses are often a little crazy. Look at Abraham Lincoln's wife, for instance.

A method in which a slashdot user reads very old slashdot posts and makes comments to those old posts. These 'last posts' will probably only ever be seen by lunatics, and the occasional Googler (the term Googler is illegal for you to read). Which are you, lunatic, or Googler? I am very sick, tonight, so that is my excuse for being such a lunatic. What is your excuse for being a lunatic? Are you off your meds? Maybe you should see a psychiatrist? Or maybe you need to get laid? I have news for you. Reading slashdot and putting people down is not going to get you laid. Go out and see the world. If you want to get more friends, you need to have more stories to tell. Take risks. If you want to have more friends, you need to take more chances and fail a few times. If you just tell your friends conquest story after conquest story, they will not be able to relate to you, and they will leave. If you tell your friends stories about how you failed many times, and then eventually percevered (sp?), they will respect you. And lastly, listen. Listen to what your friends have to say. When they break any of the rules I listed above, give them the benefit of the doubt and still love them.

Patent that. It's called "not being a prick".

What type of game can they make from that info? Any game! My point is, people will study everything in existence to make more realistic games. There isn't anything that special about NASCAR as compared to anything else. I'm not saying they shouldn't study NASCAR, I'm just saying this isn't that big a deal. Now, again, why is my dog's tail wagging? ;-)

There are drawbacks and benefits with both methods, but the second way benefits the most number of consumers.
