Yep, replying to myself. I forgot that there's a new(ish) miniatures/board game that "does the hard math for you". If you want a nice representation of orbital mechanics, try Ad Astra's "Attack Vector": http://www.adastragames.com/products/adastra/av.ht ml> Myself, I am looking forward to their game based on Weber's Harrington series: http://www.adastragames.com/products/adastra/sits. html> (And no, I don't work for the company. I just enjoy blowing up starships.)

The author is also the author of all the articles listed on the site as being in this "magazine". The article about lessons NASA can learn from MIR--I'm almost certain I've run across those quotes from Norm Thagard and David Harland in other sources. How legit is this "magazine"?

  5. Re:Do you exercise? on Computers and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Studied · · Score: 1

Greetings: When I developed CTS in 1985 I was in top physical condition. I was in the Army National Guard, just back from basic and advanced individual training. I ran, did pushups, situps, etc. While working at a crappy work station (actually a misnomer, we had a card table) for my employer, also working taking notes, transcribing, much other keyboard work, I developed problems in both hands. It took a year for a variety of doctors to determine what the problem was (I loved being on the "bleeding edge"). The eventual "cure" was surgery in both hands. It has helped--a bit--but I've developed arthritis in both hands, arms, and my neck. I continued exercising as long as possible--and that did include stretching--but eventually had to give up things like pushups and situps due to the pain in the hands. Computer use may not be the sole cause. Exercise may not be the sole cure/preventative. The answer is likely to be very complicated--involving nature and nurture, genetics, the design of your workstation, etc. (Oh by the way, here's the kicker...it took three years to collect disability for the time I was out post surgery. The amount of money I collected barely covered ONE week of salary for the time, not the three months I was out, plus legal fees...) 6. Re:Uhhh... on Palm to Buy Handspring · · Score: 1

Springboard is dead...and that's why I bought a Sony Clie when my Handspring Pro died rather than a Treo. I had invested in some modules (personally), as well as flash memory and the like. I thought the Springboard idea was a good one. By eliminating it, Handspring eliminated me as a customer when it came time to buy a new unit. Given the good service I've had with many Sony units over the years, I feel I can trust them **not** to eliminate the Memory Stick format in a year or so!

Yep, I agree. Baen has the right idea. I use my Sony Clie during my 3.0+ hours a day commuting. Heck, during the work day I sometimes use the Clie more than my PeeCee, it's where I keep my calendar, phone numbers, etc. ...And I'm not a Type A corporate type, either! Since upgrading to the Clie from the Handspring Pro, I also listen to music during my commute. I use Music Maker Juke Box and transfer .mp3 files to the plain Memory Stick (sorry Sony, I'm not falling for your digital rights management crap again). 128MB gets me two or more albums per stick, two sticks gets me through the commute, lunch and any walks I take during the day. Great stuff.

  9. Re:Good Read on A Good Summer Read? · · Score: 1

Greetings: IIRC, he has admitted to the typos and even set about correcting them for subsequent editions of the book. Maybe the paperback is more error-free than the hardcover (which I read when it came out). I have to admit that "Crypt" is the first Stephenson book other than "In the Beginning..." that I've been able to get through. Many of my friends pushed "Snowcrash" and "Diamond Age" on me, I've never been able to get through either despite repeated attempts. And here's a query: According to an interview I read with Stephenson, he stated that there would not be a electronic book edition of "Crypt" because of the playing card cryptography system that forms part of the text (and one of the appendixes). He stated that this would make it the equivalent of software, and you could not sell the book outside the US as the government would consider this about the same as trying to sell atomic weapons... So now that the electronic book edition is out, is it "crippled"? Is the playing card cryptography system still in there? Or has all that stuff been excised? FPK3

Greetings: You hit it on the head. I was hoping for a show with "retro-future-tech" (backwards from TOS), going out to the stars for the first time, etc. Instead with "Temporal Cold Wars" (gag), keep running into aliens from other Trek series that we supposedly ran into the **first time** in those series, etc., etc., etc. Oh well, got Season One of B5 on DVD, season two is waiting for me, got UFO on DVD, Space: 1999 on DVD, half of Outer Limits...you get the picture. And heck, I'm not even including all those unread books and that there telescope is waiting for me to use it as well... Who needs Trek?
