TFA shows how this student created the helicopter and described some of his aspirations for the future - this results in racist statements, and ridiculous stereotypes about Africa and Africans in general, and several posters summarily shooting down the guy's ambitions. Granted - some posters discussed the story on the merits, but when I made my post, the response I saw was ridiculing the student... not for any particular reason, other than he's from Africa. If this is not antipathy or aversion, please tell me what you see it as. I simply call it as I see it... you are free to disagree.. if you make a valid argument for your point - I am more than willing to change my opinion.
By your post, you may have clicked the link next to my name and noticed that I am a _black_ doctoral student. If you did and you used those words to anger me - then fuck you. If you didn't - and were just using them to make a point, then Ill just say that I am fully aware of the racism that is in this country. I lived all over it and was born and spent 6 years growing up in Germany - and guess what, I saw racism there too - I find it funny that alot of the world likes to lecture the US on racism, when the problem isnt confined to our country. Does our hypocrisy in that regard bother me - yes it does, to my core... there are people who come on this site and use all matter of slurs, when my family has been in this country for over 300 years, and my relatives have fought in every war from WWII on. For that reason, it doesnt really matter what people with that mindset think.
The posts I saw bothered me because I remember a few years ago how excited people on this site got seeing some jackass hook up a E-450R server in his van to play Mp-3s (later turned out to be a hoax i think) - big accomplishment to use - a computer to play mp3s, vs. a young man who built a helicopter out of scrap leftovers and taught himself how to fly it even if it barely picks up altitude.
hate on this website is appalling. Yes the kid does have unrealistic expectations if he thinks the government will buy his helicopter. But, is it not impressive that he was able to fashion a working helicopter out of existing materials? And he is not an aeronautical engineer, he's just an undergrad college student, with (apparently) very limited resources and alot of motivation. For that, all he receives here are lame jokes about crashing into elephants and other stupid 3rd world Africa jokes and several people saying they wouldnt fly in it. I wouldnt fly in Orville and Wilbur's plane either. And who cares?
Forgive me if I am wrong, but isnt this referring to taxing internet access? Many states already collect sales tax on purchases. If they aren't collecting taxes, then Amazon definitely owes me some money.
If your users send large attachments this would be an immense waste of bandwidth... just because M$ doesn't like the RFC and chooses not to follow it. hmm.. where have we seen this before?
consumers only being given the 'out-of-the-box' option of installing Linux. It is therefore in Microsoft's absolute best interest to ensure that the Windows recovery media can be re-distributed and that the loading of Windows on the new PC is as fast and painless as possible....

Somehow I don't see this happening.. call me a skeptic
I agree... this news is not really shocking.. if your album is crap and people find out before they spend their hard earned money on it... guess what? they're reluctant to buy it.
Iff the recording industry had a clue, they would take the poplarity of P2P filesharing AND the change in their sales numbers as proof that people are sick of paying inflated prices for music of decreasing quality. Just yet another example of people with money trying to use people with less money to keep their broken business model floating...
I would like to see more studies on this subject though. It would be nice if the entertainment industry would get over themselves and began to value their customers' wants and needs.
Maybe I missed it, but I thought the idea was to have.mail on tyhe mail server. One of you is abracadabra.mail the other one is whateverelse.mail.... you know MX records do not have to be from the same domain as the mail server sits in.... I have my mail for domain1.com, domain2.com, domain3.net, and domain4.us all routed through mail.domain2.com.
as an aside, I think forcing all email addresses to be.mail is ridiculous, but I dont think this is what the proposal is suggesting.
after doing those things if you dont get de-listed, I would buy another domain (coupla bucks), if possible get another IP (I dont know how ur server is connected to the i-net), and reconfigure the mail box for the new ip/hostname and update my MX records.... which should be good unless they are blocking ur whole subnet, in which case... i dont have any advice
Well, there is something to be said about learning and the social experiences that college provides, as well as the opportunity to network with other people who may (or may not) be successful.... but I do get your point
So... as they eliminate tech jobs in the US, who is going to by products made by HP, Dell, or . I do not doubt the technical acuity of Indian workers, and obviously the problem isn't our schools, I am a Ph. D. student in Computer Science at a school in North Carolina where more than 60% of the other students are immigrants from China or India, or other Asian countries. The problem is the greedy CEOs. Maybe there needs to be legislation capping the compensation of executives. How many engineers could HP pay for Carly's salary?
See I am as pro-open source as they come, and I am not anti microsoft (its actually a coincidence that I disagree with approximatley 90% of the bs they put out) how ever, to be fair, I have to agree with your sarcasm here. Why on slashdot is it news that MS is phasing out old versions of its software (and 3rd party stuff that uses the same protocols)... must be a slow day
Yet another example of a SlashDot post...
find unreliable information (when did Nielsen become the authority on File Sharing Traffic.. this is a joke right? Im not even sure i trust some of their TV rating output)
make sure it has the right keywords (Microsoft,
Linux, GNU, DRM, RIAA, MPAA, SCO for example)
Post it and wait for 500+ responses
I too am boycotting ALL major label releases, not just because of the crippled disks, but also because of the whole RIAA/Napster/Kazaa/Verizon/Grokster/etc issue...
Just curious though, am I the only one who thinks it is sad that the only place where the labels are invincible in court is the US? I think it will be damn near impossible to beat then in court. The best thing that could happen is more people just quit buying from them.
Eventually they will get the message. Its funny though, because the crippled CD's do not even prevent copying.. just makes them less useful.
I love gaming as much as the next guy, and this is a good way to show off the hardware, could someone please tell me how they picked the mecca of Louisville, Kentucky as the location for this event???
I agree.. but I am starting to question the point of every person under the sun making statements about the validity of the lawsuit, before the case actually begins. I guess some people need to be constantly reminded about how non-sensical (is that a word?) the whole thing is. I think for all intents and purposes, at least in the Slashdot community, most people realize what is really going on... Hopefully the stream of people exposing the deception in SCO's case, and SCO's history (particularly Mr. McBride) being involved in things like this will prevent further damage to Linux's reputation in the enterprise environment... personally I think that the fact that they won't identify the code that infringes to the public or more importantly the kernel list, AND the fact that they were a part of the Linux community up-to and briefly after beginning this nonsense is evidence that their case is at least somewhat shaky (to put it mildly).
its funny that you post as anonymous coward, because that shows that you already know how ignorant that comment was... i am not mad at you because generations of idiots such as yourself have created the circumstances that allow people to actually believe ignorant shit like that by attempting to dehumanize blacks and other non-white people as being less than human, or in some other way less than themselves. I would try to give you some knowledge, but I have already wasted more than enough time on this lost cause already... tip... pick up a book and read/...if you did you would know that among other things, genetic diversity _BETWEEN_ people of different "races" is less than the genetic diversity _WITHIN_ people of different "races" (read further and you might learn more about why the notion of race is even more ignorant).. take a second and think about the fact that skin tone is one of millions of characteristics that humans possess, I would love to hear you explain scientifically how skin tone is _THE_ indicator that a person is "better" than others, although I actually wish that you were right (you aren't), because as a human being i am ashamed that we are in the same species.
but in past cases where domain had to be transferred, was it not because the domain name itself violate someone's IP rights, i.e. registering VinceCarter.com or WarrenSapp.com and trying to make the individual/company/entity/whatever pay exhorbitant fees for the domain. I know the federal government can and does do this (force domain transfers in certain cases), but since when did owning the rights to a product give a company the same rights as law enforcement... yeah yeah yeah, I know, RIAA.. blah blah blah..
also.. Im looking at this [cira.ca rules for registering.ca domain names] and fail to see how Directnic can legally take over the domain anyway.... I could see how they could have a case for having the site shut down, but not much more... but then again I A N A L

needs to stop if there is "infringing" content i guess they have a right to sue... but perhaps that means the whole system of how intellectual property... particularly with respect to software.. need to change... what is going to happen if 2-3 yrs from now Amazon sells off part of its business including its 50 zillion patents... will we have to pay a royalty to use any interactive content on pages? This is just out of control.
Their Linux distribution sucks anyway... so I wonder what they think harassing end users will do.. I would run just about any alternative OS before I bought anything from SCO at this point.
If it werent for Amazon's patent, Verisign would probably like to add buy it now pages on the non-resolving dns names....

The only thing that will convinve legislators to choose the common man over the recording industry is an equally funded lobbying group... not likely
