If it's an audio CD - No way in hell regardless of price. I bought my last CD about 2-3 years ago, when I discovered it had DRM on it I vowed never again. (I only kept it because I am a big fan of the artist.)
Physical products should not contain any DRM, but allow for a sales paradigm that a small'ish fee and a download allows for limited DRM or other revenue genterating ideas for the content provider.
$1.00 movie downloads, free TV show downloads with ads built-in.
DVD = $20 + ability to rip/store and view *for personal useage only*
Movie companies want you to goto the theater & buy a ticket and then buy the DVD. How many people here can attest to d'loading a crappy cam version of a film and then wanting the "extra-value" that the theater experience offers?
I know I do all the time. I use cam downloads as my person movie critic Roger & Fatbert.
It has also saved me from wasting my money. With the exception of bandwidth costs (And there are alternative methods that could be looked into) they have nothing to loose.
Too many times companies are stuck in the same mindset of: It has worked well for the last 100 years, why should we change now?
Anytime I have been presented with one of those agreements that I have to sign, I always print:
Signed under Duress: Name.
I don't code (Unless you count PHP, and I am as talented as a 50 year-old retarded ape), but I can't stand the lawyer'esq corporate view of "We own you now!"
It has never been brought back to me as a problem.
I log and keep all my traffic including IRC logs going back to '94.
My email isn't in quite the mess yours is, (I used Eudora for almost all of my emailing since I first got on the net, and have just imported from one version to another, and now into Thunderbird.)
I would simply start copying & pasting, or see if you can try importing into excel.
...regulators tried to ban a device which allowed TV shows to be pirated....
How about a little truth: "Regulators tried to ban a device that would allow for personal copying, and went against a previous Supreme Court ruling (Sony vs Betamax)."
There once was a time when I respected Slashdot for it's common-sense + Left'ish wing viewpoints. Now it looks like nothing more then an elementary school whine-fest. Poor spelling, grammer and an uncanny nack for re-posting stuff other peoples' work.
Just kind of "thinking-out-loud" but, why not have it setup so that each system in the cluster only worked on 25% (if there are say 5 systems + 1 traffic cop)
And add to the fact that Most TV's display less then 600x400 and 30fps is enough for video playback, it just might be beefy enough.
I don't like Mac's. I don't own a Mac. I can count on one hand the number of times I have used a Mac.
Yet I can't shake the feeling that Apple is the only company who stands a chance in hell of actually doing this right.
I find it funny, that consumers are just starting to get into the idea of using PC's as media centers just at the same time that **AA has taken away all our rights to do that.
Computer industry lawyers vs **AA lawyers (Now thats an episode of Survivor that'd want to watch.)
In the DOS days every game had their "own-way" of doing it. There were no API's, not Direct X, etc...
Games were possible, and usually fun. Why doesn't that happen now in the linux camps? I assume it's better* (tm) to build & use an API, then the work is easier for everybody else, but what about just doing your own thing and making what you need?
Disclaimer: I don't know anything about programming, and I can't understand why REM doesn't work anymore.

Yes I know it's an age-old problem, but holy fuck it's screwed up.
I'm not a programmer (basic doesn't count anymore does it =), I am admin + help desk + repair tech +...etc... one-stop-shop in our company. I do everything, and after spending 8 hours 'working' on PC's and various projects (MySQL, PHP, web) I go home and I spend 6 hours working on PC's.
About the only thing I can't stand to do is the 'helpdesk' role to my family.

For several years now (since NAFTA was created) there has been talk(hype) about building a "true" super highway.
It would run from the California/Mexico border to the Michigan/Canada border.
We are talking about autobahn-style no speed limit, limited # of on/off ramps per state, and dedicated lanes. IIRC it was also going to be an 'elevated-highway' in environmentally sensitive and urban areas.
I live right in the middle of the Canadian-part of this highway, southern-Ontario.
There have been many community meetings and petitions to avoid this kind of idea, (mostly NIMBY not-in-my-back-yard protests.)
I just hope they can do this in an environmentally neutral way.
Repeat after me: There is NEVER a nice mix of Vin & Porn...

Or have a quality/price ratio.
piss-poor = free
56k stream = $0.99 / video
128k stream = $1.50
T1 = $2.00
DVD = $20 + ability to rip/store and view *for personal useage only*

hehe, I really should hit that preview button. :-)
I am just trying to fit in.

No, I don't know anything about Mac's. Does the software exist (free like linny) that does everything linux can do?
While I love the size and versatile nature of Via's Mini-ITX line, I have found their systems to be very unreliable.
These AMD systems would be perfect for many linux applications;
firewall, file servers, dumb-terminals, HTPC boxes, hell make a cluster out of 100 of them and they still waste less energy then a P4!
It would be cool to see how a cluster like that could handle mpeg4 encoding/decoding.
You also have CarPC's and many other options.
I want some, can ya tell?
Intel meet bandwagon,
1,2,3 JUMP!

Ack, I got that backwards.... /me curses not using the preview button
Movie = stole from warden
Book = shoved $$ up his own ass
Yupp, mod parent up.
The book lacked any finesse what-so-ever. In the movie the 'Hero' got rich by shoving all his money upp his ass before he went to jail.
Movie: He stole it from the 'evil' warden.
Enraged? No, more like pity.
I'll let you pick who I feel the pity for.
Am I the only one who thought of a few laxitive jokes when they read this?

You have hit the nail on the head. Some of us are more carmudgen then others (I think I might be the king), but you-gotta-wanna change.
AND don't switch back untill you have gotten 3 of your 'primary' needs to work. Once you figure out all the new wierdness, you will love it.
I love IceWM on my crap-tastic laptop at work, I also love using it at home on my power-rig, I just wish I oculd make it more-KDE like.*
On my main rig, I have all the horsepower that I need to keep all the pretty eye-candy, and I do 'enjoy' the non-hassle that KDE offers.
How can I make Ice more like KDE, or KDE more like Ice.
Things I like:
Ice: run-bar, right-click = instant access to common apps, very-wasy to edit config files.
KDE: MIME types are remembered!, themes/fonts/screensavers/wallpaper (eyecandy) easy to install & use, more things just _work_.
Overall I like the DE over the WM, but I wish I could just prune it down a little.
I like core-features (that contradict each other) from both. what...to...do...
(No I can't roll-my-own, I'm an idiot)

Hey moron, your turn signal has been on for the last 3 km!
Hmm, The Aztec Solar calender is much more accurate then our current one, so why not just use it?
After all aliens taught them how to do it. Nah, why bother. The world will end December 2013.
I used to run this CPU in a mini-itx box that I built.
My box had 256MB of ram, and a DVD-rom drive.
DVD, Divx, Xvid, etc... playback was poor. Don't consider it do-able for most viewing.
The plus side is that it's running Linux, so you can 'prolly strip out most of the crap and get decent proformance.
The down side is that it's a laptop. Shared memory bus and all that other crap.
Ack I am an idiot....
Please replace every StarTrek reference with Star Wars.
It's easy to see why Star * is easily confused. 99% of all computer releases for both franchises sucked goat.
(Damn, i need to check preview more often)
Like I said, I am an idiot
