    Didn't Apple die?

Not only is Apple alive, they should have some interesting new stuff coming out the beginning of the New Year. The MacWorld keynote is January 6. Rumors are circulating of new, smaller iPods with 2gb and 4gb capacities and a lower price. There are some mockups and pictures here.

While I think you make a valuable point, one that many people would do well to seriously consider, I think it also worth mentioning that most creatures we are aware of do not build supercolliders. Our understanding of the Universe is perhaps minimal at best, and while physicists may believe the possibility of creating a universe-destroying effect as a result of supercollider experimentation to be small, there are of course numerous examples throughout history of scientists being surprised and astounded at experiment results that they considered 'unlikely'. I'm not necessarily suggesting stopping all supercollider experimentation. But perhaps it is just as naive to believe that we _cannot_ affect the entire universe, as it is to believe it's likely that we can do so.

    > When it comes to kinetic energy relative velocity plays a far greater part than mass.

See that is what I am saying. I'm not questioning whether there was mismanagement, as unfortunately that much seems pretty much obvious. I'm wondering why it is that after observing the foam impact, studying, and running computer simulations, these same scientists are so surprised at the damage from a real world test. They expected to see some tile damage, not a complete hole in the wing. I realize simulations are only as good as the data you feed it, but it almost seems to indicate that either someone's math (and NASA simulation models as a result) are completely in error, or that perhaps some people knew the possible implications and were basically ignored. I guess that is essentially why this investigation is taking place, but it seems as if the scope of the damage should have been much more obvious from simulations.

  8. computer modeling on NASA Test Shows Foam Could Be Culprit · · Score: 1
Aside from the issues of using telescopes to look at Columbia in orbit, possibly altered reentry paths, or other methods of mitigating disaster, why do these people actually need to get out a piece of foam and shoot it at a wing? Is it honestly that surprising to rocket scientists that anything, even foam, is going to cause some serious damage at 500mph? The Star Wars/SDI initiative was based around this premise -- the small plastic 'warheads' had no explosives, taking out ICBMs via pure kinetic energy.

Regardless of SDI and the size of the NASA budget, they do have numerous super computers, as well as access to other computing systems. I seem to recall they even did run some tests. How can the computer models be so far off?

Of course, none of this addresses the issue that if NASAs budget hadn't been crippled for decades there would likely already be repair infrastructure in space, rather than a single space station so hobbled by budget cuts they are now considering abandoning it (further excellent use of a small budget). I'm sorry, I know people lost friends and heros during this tragedy, but unfortunately there are also a number of issues surrounding these events that are almost rather incredulous.

A stirling engine has no moving parts? That's news to me. I followed your link to the sterling engine page and cliped the specs...... I just don't get the 150 RPM and ball bearing portions of the specification if there are no moving parts. ;-)

that's because that particular application of the stirling engine is trying to get mechanical energy out of it. (IANAME (mechanical engineer)) but as I understand it a pure stirling engine, essentially an external combustion engine, has no moving parts. Only the expansion and contraction of a gas medium inside the engine causes its motion. I'm not sure they would be any kind of solution because I think you would have to get the 'hot' end of the engine hotter than the cpu you are trying to cool, but then that may be an easier place to work with the thermal energy dissipation issues than the CPU itself. But if you are trying to use the engine for the purpose of thermal energy control, as this would be, the engine itself would have no moving parts.

the engines available at the link provided in the parent are pretty small, intended primarily for educational and entertainment purposes as opposed to real work, I just figured there are some links there to real information on how the stirling engine actually works. they are kind of intersting..taking a bit of time to get up to speed (perhaps another issue in their use for this particular application) but as I was saying they are supposed to be fairly efficient. I'm not sure how this is different than a peltier unit, though.

Still I would imagine you might need more space to accomplish this sort of solution. Has anyone looked into stirling engines as a method of heat transferal? They have no moving parts and are reportedly fairly effecient. I have been looking into using them to harness solar power.
