  3. Absolutely not ready for prime-time on Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark Released · · Score: 1

Installed it yesterday, and it's a total mess! Mouse hangs (constantly!) and most of my apps no longer worked. Spent about half a day with it and ended up having to do a complete re-install of 17.04 Gnome. Beware!! I advise against upgrading to this on a machine that gets used for real work...

  4. The Ads make this a non-starter for me. on Hulu Lowers Prices After Netflix Raises Theirs (variety.com) · · Score: 1

The whole point of moving to streaming is to get away from the 10-15 minutes of commercials. It's way past the point of ridiculous. I can't even watch regular TV anymore. Netflix+Prime has allowed me to ditch the ads, and I ain't never going back!

If Hulu is ADDING to the number of ads, I don't really expect them to be around much longer...

  6. "See if you're affected" on Equifax Breach is Very Possibly the Worst Leak of Personal Info Ever (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 1

To make matters worse, all of these links to their "see if you're affected" site directs you to their credit monitoring site. You plug in your name and the last 6 digits of your SSN thinking that it's going to do what it says, and instead it begins the process of enrolling you into their credit monitoring program and, consequently, giving up your right to sue.

When I first visited this site I was connected to our campus VPN and the VPN service blocked the site, labeling it as "dangerous." At first, I thought this was a mistake but, as it turns out, I think the VPN was correct!

IMO, Congress should start an investigation into this. It's just WRONG!

  7. Re:"Redistribution Policy" on Endless OS Now Ships With Steam And Slack FlatPak Applications (endlessos.com) · · Score: 1

Yes, I did point out about the trademarks that they have and I understand that. What I don't understand is what they're saying here: "Physical Redistribution:You may redistribute pristine, unmodified copies of Endless OS on physical media."

From the sound if this, they're implicitly saying that you CAN'T distribute modified versions of the OS. It sounds to me like what they're saying is that forking the distro (they can call it "Whatever OS" if they want to but, if it's using the Linux kernel as its core, it's a Linux distro!) a la CentOS or one of the unofficial Ubuntu derivatives such as Bodhi Linux. I'm pretty sure you can't take GPL code, build upon it, then say "you can ONLY distribute unmodified copies of it." This was the point that I was trying to make...

  8. "Redistribution Policy" on Endless OS Now Ships With Steam And Slack FlatPak Applications (endlessos.com) · · Score: 2

Also, IANAL, but I don't think I like this clause from their "Redistribution Policy":

"Physical Redistribution:You may redistribute pristine, unmodified copies of Endless OS on physical media such as CD/DVD, USB disk or SD/MMC card."

Since it's based on the Linux kernel, I'm pretty sure we can modify and redistribute it pretty much however the f#ck we want! They can restrict logos, graphics, any commercial components, etc., but that's about it. Of course, just because a company puts something in their license agreement doesn't automatically make it legal, but this is VERY misleading. REF:

    https://support.endlessm.com/hc/en-us/articles/210527203-Am-I-allowed-to-redistribute-Endless-OS-

They make it sound like, just because they have included a bit of non-open-source software with their distro, this gives them complete control over redistribution policies. Again, IANAL, but I'm pretty sure that's not how the GPL works...

  9. This distro is a whole lot of nope! on Endless OS Now Ships With Steam And Slack FlatPak Applications (endlessos.com) · · Score: 5, Informative

Event Recorder Daemon — Saves recorded user metrics and transmits them in small batches when there’s an internet connection.

Metrics Instrumentation Daemon — Records information about the system, such as performance info.

Phone Home — Anonymous user counter.

A Linux distro that phones home. Well, now I think I've seen it all!

Well, I'm calling bullshit just because Edge only plays Netflix at 720p on my Win10 Pro box. That's with verified 50 Gbps down-speed, all software/drivers up-to-date, and with a GTX 580 card (and yes, it is HDCP-compliant). If there's some buried, undocumented setting that I have to enable in order to get it to work, that doesn't count IMO.

    So, bullshit...

  12. Stay away from Microsoft digital media purchases! This should absolutely send people running from the Microsoft Windows Store. Whoever thought that this was a good or even plausible idea must be brain-dead. It's the best advertisement for Google Play that I've seen yet!

It takes forever for the manufacturers (+ carriers sometimes) to release the update (if ever). If I had to guess, this is probably the number one complaint against Android and, from what I've seen, the Nexus devices are not immune!
