I agree with parent post, the Nokia N95 8GB should be great. You can hit up Nokia's website for the specs, or phonescoop of course. They are coming out with the N96 sometime this year too, it looks promising as well, but the Nokia N-series is definitely the leading edge of its category.

  2. the best comment on Mozilla to Develop Mobile Firefox · · Score: 1

The best comment I've heard yet isn't on slashdot (not surprisingly) but from a blog by Russell Beattie...

We've gone from almost no advanced mobile browsers just a few years ago, to a ton of choices. It makes you wonder if Mozilla could do something else to enhance the mobile web, rather than re-creating the wheel with yet another browser that works on the phone.

With that being said, the article also says "Mobile Firefox will arrive later (certainly not before 2008)." That's a lot of time for them to come up with a great product, but it's also enough time for the Mobile hardware industry to completely turn around. Mobile phones are the new laptops people, it's true. Well, ok not yet but real soon now. Minimo (Mozilla's *apparently* failed attempt at a mobile browser) ran like hell on my HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125) but I believe by the time Mobile Firefox is available, things like plugins will be usable. They sure aren't right now...

I'll sure never buy an iPhone, but I thank Apple for motivating everyone else.

They are aware of tactics like this, I'm sure they're used all the time.

  5. right idea, wrong direction on A Chip on DVDs Could Prevent Theft · · Score: 4, Informative

Well, there is a great idea in here somewhere. "A chip smaller than the head of a pin is placed onto a DVD along with a thin coating that blocks a DVD player from reading critical information on the disc. At the register, the chip is activated and sends an electrical pulse through the coating, turning it clear and making the disc playable." Wow.

How long do you think it will take for these "DVD Decryption" devices, as it were, to hit the black market and for plans to be readily available on the internet?

How about, a security device hidden on the DVD itself that will ALWAYS make the security device go off (electrical tape be damned) unless it's rung up at the register first? That would sound like a useful application to me. Come on... people will stop stealing just because they can't watch it? The basic principle of stealing/hacking/whatever is first and foremost "do it to see if you can" right? I can't imagine the inordinate amount of people who will laugh their asses off after stealing this worthless media content, if for no other reason just to piss off Wal*Mart or whoever. It's fun sticking it to the proverbial man.

Another point, how many of you have bought a DVD or other related product, and gotten the hidden security device on it deactivated at the register, just to have to door alarm beep at you and you have to pull out your receipt to verify your purchase? How many people are going to make it out the door and to their homes, to discover their DVD wasn't REALLY activated at the register, before they figure out it's a bad idea? You think Wal*Mart is going to believe you when you come back in and say "Yes I bought this, no it wasn't activated for some reason" ? NO NO NO NO NO.

There ARE some useful applications for this technology, oh yes, there are; however, I really think this one is quirky. Come on Corporate America.

  8. What about blocking numbers? on Polite Cell Phones · · Score: 1

A cell phone that has the option of shutting the ringer off at night is something useful, and the idea of a cell phone that can determine you're in a dark place and shut itself off is neat. I imagine it will be super expensive though--I mean, my cell phone gripes if I have more than 30 text messages saved, I can't imagine a phone doing all this costing near as much as the cells that don't.

I've always wanted a cell phone that could/would block a specific number somehow. Why not? I have annoying people call me that I sure didn't give my number to them (or I regret doing so...). How about a section of the contacts/address book for phone numbers we want to ignore? Where's the phone that only takes calls from people who are actually saved in your phone? Cell phones are obviously going to be around for a long, long time. We have the technology, it only makes sense to make them better and extremely useful to us in everyday life (if you choose to use these features, of course..)

Your logic is incredible. Have you actually done any research into this, other than naming off how 5 other companies are promoting their 5 different ways? Astounding, my friend.

I did some actual work (plugged in 'how to cancel secondlife' on Google) and the first link was the TOS, or Terms of Service. What an odd place to look to see how things work....but I risked it.

    Point 1:

3.7 Cancellation, Refunds, Reactivation. Accounts may be cancelled at any time, by going to the My Account page and clicking on "cancel". Upon clicking "cancel," your account will be cancelled immediately, but you will be allowed to use the remaining time according to these Terms of Service unless your account or this Agreement is suspended or terminated based on our belief that you have violated or acted inconsistently with Section 5.1 of this Agreement. THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS FOR ANY UNUSED TIME ON A SUBSCRIPTION. At the end of a subscription period, your cancelled account will become dormant for 60 days. If during that time you want to reopen your account, you will be able to return to your My Account page and click the "re-activate" button at which time you will be prompted to review billing details to confirm that the plan you want is selected and that your credit card is still valid. If, for any reason, your credit card cannot be charged or payment is withheld, your account will become dormant as if you had cancelled it.

Go to the My Accounts page and click Cancel. Difficulty rating: A JILLION!!!!!!!!!!! Looks like you can actually go sign up for a free trial, cancel the account IMMEDIATELY, and still be able to use the account for the remaining time period per states in the Terms of Service, which is a week. Also if you decide within that week that you actually Like the service, you have the opportunity after the week subscription is up to log back into the My Accounts page and click the re-activate link. Another difficult task? Ok...

    Another thing I noticed was:

3.4 Trial. After registering, you will be given a 7-day trial period beginning with your first login to Second Life. You may cancel your account at any time during the 7-day trial. If you want to change your account type you may do so at any time (either before or after the trial period - see Section 3.6 below). You are limited to one 7-day trial per credit card for any 3-month period. If you do not cancel your account during the 7-day trial, you will be charged based on the account type you selected during registration unless you have spent less than an hour in-world during the trial period.

If you don't even spend an hour in there, you aren't even billed even if you do forget. Smooth.

People who don't take the time to read the Terms of Service at places that might possibly be getting their money, intentionally or unintentionally, can't be helped. I know it happens too often, but this is just another point why people need to read their shit.

Also: "There have been plenty of horror stories from AOL and porn sites where once they've got your card it becomes a nightmare of phone calls to have it removed."

Just goes to show you how easy it is for any moron to have internet access.

    Good-bye! :)
