That's about the quality I'm seeing. Yes, it's a story within itself to explain the future, but its being poorly written. The original series and NextGen had some good episodes. This one has poor episodes, and effects that are a little ahead of what they should be (A friend points out that nacelles light up when going into warp, and they didn't do that until a few ship classes before the Enterprise-D (Galaxy class).

And did I hear the pilot (I used to be a boomer) as the voice of the dilithium freighters in "Star Trek Armada 2" (PC game)? If you ask me, they're making too much of a deal with his whole background, not there is much of one there.

I just haven't tested the audio CD playing capability, which it also says it can do.

One thing I'm curious about is if these things will handle the screwy copy-protection audio CD's.

The one problem with your setup is that there's no remote control included... to navigate the main menu, skip chapters, etc, you'll need to be at the computer.

Now, that's not a problem for me, for regular movies. I start up a movie, then sit back and watch it. But, for things like Anime, where the include beginning credits and end credits for each episode, sometimes 5-6 per disc, you might want to have chapter forward capability.

But, I have the same setup at home as what you described, and it works excellent... minus the decoder card, but a PIII-600 or higher kinda negates the need of a decoder card. Only drawback is you have to buy a software decoder (I'm talking from a Windows standpoint, not Linux.)

A Software decoder, like Intervideo WinDVD, is $39.99. For that amount, go ahead and waste a PCI slot for $10 more. I don't understand why Microsoft didn't just go ahead and include a software decoder built into the OS (Windows XP), and put those guys out of business.... they've already screwed Winzip, PKzip, WinAMP (although I still use it), Roxio (EZ-CD Creator), and others. Once you have the software decoder installed, Windows Media Player (I know, many of you hate it) justs references the drivers and uses them as if they were codecs.

Power is only available over one carrier, Norwich Utilities. I can't change over to the statewide carrier, CL&P, or choose who my generator is (although those outside on CL&P tell me prices are identical on all generators).

Phone is only available via SNET. Period. I can choose loong-distance, but that's my only flexibility.

Cable is available over Adelphia. I can't choose to go over to Eastern Connecticut Cable (who does offer @Home). Also, Adelphia has a terrible lineup, so I decided to go Dish, and saved $5 a month while getting more channels of what I want. (Sure I can't watch When Millionaires Attack on the local Fox/ABC affiliate, but I never did)

Broadband: Sure, I have a choice. I've got Adelphia (cable modem) telling me they'll get to my area in a year and a half to two years (which is the same as they told me a year ago). I ask them to offer @Home, and they tell me they have their own service. I've got SNET (DSL) telling me that I'm 750 feet out of range, because I live on town border. Then I've got Starband (sure, I'll pay $800 hardware, $200 installation fee, and $80 monthly fee for a service with terrible lag!) Or, I can go with ISDN ($1000 installation, $70 monthly) or T1 ($2000 monthly).

All because back in the 70's, Connecticut had no public utilities, and they let the private companies set up their own networks, instead of the state putting the wiring in and licensing to run over it. Now, the utilites make their own contracts with the town to be a monopoly for that town, and the town has no choice, because the utilities sure won't let someone else run over their lines! I've written my State Rep, but what good has that done?

I know, I know. Quit bitching and move to Europe already!

Warp Nacelles folding up: Berman thought it looked cool. But yes, that explanation you gave pretty much covers it.

I didn't factor those events in because I was looking at it from Janeway's view in "Caretaker Part 2". She didn't know those things would pop up, so she was figuring the time out as best as she could, taking in the delays, and not accounting for any shortcuts.

That's not to say she wasn't looking for shortcuts. Most of the first season was about the ship looking for shortcuts, preferrably wormholes (for example: Eye of the Needle, Prime Factors, dialogue from multiple episodes). About the beginning of second season, the topic turned more to "Well, we can't find a shortcut, so let's try to make first contacts and explore while we're here", which understandably brought up arguments from crew members, especially Neelix, from time to time.

And yes, I have seen the whole series, from start to finish. I have quite a few arguments about where technology disappeared to (Warp Ten shuttle (Threshold), Coaxial Warp (Vis a Vis), Quantum Slipstream (Hope and Fear... Seven said at the end of the episode that she was working on it to adapt to Voyager's systems), Transwarp Conduit (Dark Frontier... that was adapting Transwarp Conduit for use on Voyager, not using an external Conduit Generator).

Understandably the creators couldn't use such easy ways out, because if Voyager had a quick way home, most of the series was gone. However, revisiting Slipstream or Coaxial Warp would have been a nice thing to see. (Remembering Coaxial Warp, it supposedly took them about 10% faster than their existing warp, and would have still meant a long travel.)
