I guess you're right about BASIC being a flawed language, but that's not my main point. If you can teach higher level concepts with python or perl or php or something, that would work just as well, most likely better.

  3. A good idea on Learning Computer Science via Assembly Language · · Score: 2, Insightful

I agree that assembly language should be taught, but not necessarily as the first language. BASIC is a good tool for teaching higher level programming ideas like conditional statements, loops, etc... Once those concepts are understood, C should be taught. I was a fairly proficient C programmer before I learned assembly (68k), but even then assembly helped me understand much more about the inner workings of C and what lines of code do. Instead of just knowing that code I write works, I now know why it works and I am able to do much more advanced things with a low-level knowledge of programming.

Rather than criticize, maybe I ought to have said that it would have been admirable if Google had noted this and made some effort to avoid it.

I do agree with that. Since, as you said, there are people who continue to open attachments when repeatedly told not to, some sort of warning on Orkut would be nice. Although, I don't see how Google could get this warning to people unless they read the site before getting the spam. I guess we'll just have to let natural selection continue on its course :).

Maybe they're just going to analog video recordings for now, but one assumes the license plate images are easy to OCR and that can be done in real time soon enough.

Like the other post about England, this has been done in Rhode Island, to a lesser extent. There's a system down there that snaps a picture of anyone who runs a red light, OCRs the plate, and prepares a ticket. The only human intervention needed is a quick verification (1 click at headquarters) and the ticket's sent out. If the person tries to challenge it, the state has video of them going through the red light, not a single challenge has been successful.

I'm surprised how many people have unsecured wireless access points. I'm not talking about WEP, just basic access restricton based on MAC address. I have a Linksys wireless router, and I have it set to only allow certain wireless MAC addresses to connect. If a friend with a wireless laptop is visiting or for some reason I get a new wireless adapter, all I have to do is log into the router from a wired computer or one that already has access , find the denied MAC address in the access logs, and allow it access. Nothing has to be done on the client machines, and I don't have to worry about wardrivers.

I have an early Compaq portable, which, as stated in the article, is more correctly described as luggable for its size. I have a speech recognition card for it that actually works very well, although it can only recognize pretrained words. It may be old, but it still works great and would be good if someone wants a cheap computer to learn programming.

Show me someone who can write at 50wpm. No matter how fast you move your hand, it's just not physically possible to form letters using a pen as quickly as tapping the letters on a keyboard.
