Good point. I'd mod you up if I wasn't replying to you.
I have never bought a brand new car and never intend to. It seems much wiser to have someone else pay the biggest part of the depreciation, which occurs at the start of the vehicle's life (in fact the greatest depreciation occurs in the 2 minutes while you drive it off the lot).
I buy cars which have just come off their first lease period (typically 3-4 years because of the tax structures here in.AU favouring salary sacrifice for the car's expenses). A well made, well maintained car is barely worn in after 3 years.
Like you I perfer German performance cars (Audi S4 FTW!).
And as you point out, this strategy is very "green" without even trying.
> It is probably one of the larger reasons the U.S. is presently disliked in the world.
You sir have hit the nail on the head.
I'm in Australia, and, as part of a free trade agreement between ourselves and the USA, we were required to enact some of the provisions of the DMCA.
I think that it's a given that if you hit someone at speed, you will break their legs. That usually isn't fatal though.
What they are trying to prevent is the pedestrian's upper body and especially their head slamming down onto a solid bonnet/hood then sliding up and striking the bottom of the windshield.
Don't let the RIAA hear about this ruling, or they'll be able to sue anyone with MP3s on their computer, since it might be possible for them to be illegally distributed!
I wonder if any of these sell themselves as a "family oriented" ISP - That is they embrace the blocking because it is a point of differentiation and thus a marketing tool for them (Webshield in particular sounds suspicious)? If so, and this misguided project comes to fruition, they will lose their advantage.
Hello, I don't live in the USA so I'm wondering what sort of education campaign the FCC has run about this.
I would have thought that there would be ads every hour or two saying "This station is going away soon - Do something!", but it seems that is not the case.
Christianity is doing wonders in Africa at changing the hearts of millions and bringing them to a point where they can build peaceful, stable societies.
You say "Christianity" I would say "Good people working together under the banner of Christanity."
The problem I have with such missionary work is the expectation (if not explicit requirement) that the recipients convert to Christianity.
Well, look at airbags. They used to deploy too forcefully, and we learned via a few tragedies that kids can't be in the front seat.
Wasn't this problem related to airbags being used as the primary restraint (since people couldn't be convinced to wear their seatbelts)? It wasn't practical to have an airbag capable of stopping a large adult also work successfully for a small child.
Here's a clue... You encounter idiots everywhere in life. Sometimes they are just caught off guard, sometimes they are having a bad day, sometimes they are outside their domain of expertise, and sometimes they are simply a waste of space.
You have to find the patience within yourself to get on with your life, accepting that there are some things you can't change.
But getting angry or depressed about it certainly won't help.
I don't know enough about the problem to know what the solution is
The politically unsavory reality is that in a reasonably free society, terrorism cannot be entirely eliminated. It becomes a question of how much risk, versus how much is paid in money and liberty.
Sadly, governments around the world seem to be happy to use terrorism as a tool to reduce freedom, and thus encourage scare-mongering.
If they instead reassured you that the chances of being caught in a terrorist incident were 10 times less than dying of septicemia (in 2001, much less in most other years), which no-one worries about, then everyone could probably go about their lives much happier, and government money could be spent more productively. Like, perhaps in investigating and reducing the causes of terrorism?

Perhaps the machines will start leaving thoughtful and intelligent posts.

Also, no matter how pious they got, and how hard they prayed, they still died. So it would seem that _for these people_ prayer had a 0% success rate.
I thought the expression was "Spank the monkey."
Yes, it is apparently already being done on a large scale:

Can someone provide some details?

So Bush himself is classified Top Secret?

I shake my head in sad disbelief.

Add to that the possibility of taking some drugs (prescription, alcohol, whatever) to reduce anxiety and thus affect the readings such that they pass.
how could we tell? I don't know enough to prove him wrong, so whatever.
This theory is thoroughly explained here: http://www.venganza.org/ and here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster
So that explains all the canonical postings on slashdot!
This would be great if your leg had been bitten by a shark!
That's because you're in the metric section of the thread, LoCs are an imperial measurement!
I think it's because they start their arrays at 1 instead of zero ...
Couldn't MS just source a quieter DVD drive?
But doesn't the DRM prevent piracy?
If not, why are they using it?
Or as another example, if you're having sex, and you or your partner is about to orgasm, and you just stop.
This is Slashdot. Please confine yourself to car analogies.
