I agree with the parent. I work as a gameplay programmer because I love games, computers, science, etc. My love and passion for these subjects doesn't get reflected in the work I do. I code someone else's crappy idea, I track server side crashes and comment functions in case someone else looks at them and wonders what I'm doing. I'm certainly not picasso behind a canvas. Not an artist, not a scientist, and barely an engineer. I prefer this work over databases or web scripting, but life is a set for which work should only be a small subset of. I didn't go to school so I could work so I could pay bills so I could go into debt and repeat until health problems occur or my youth fades away.
Working to pay the bills, to feed my family, to be able to travel and enjoy time, that's a purpose. But not only do you need money, you need time to accomplish anything. Working 80 hours a week is sacrificing your life for your work or making your work your life. How sad is it that the best life one could come up with is sitting in front of a monitor for 12 hours a day while you gain weight and your wrists go to waste.
Better to work 45 hours, make them count and still have time to exercise, have fun, spend time with family...
That's because the original Japanese game didn't have an Orchestral soundtrack and not every song has been re-recorded. Some Synth has creeped in and it is noticeable at times.
You seem a little confused yourself. If you played the japanese versions you would know that DQ1 also featured a confusing password system. That was one of the elements that were made more accesible for our palates.
"As much as I'd like to see an English version of Dragon Quest V for the PS2 (or IV for PSX, for that matter), I'm kinda hoping DQVIII continues to bomb in North America and Europe. So long as it stays a Japan-only kitsch thing, there's hope that it will stick with the fundamentals, making those rare DQ expeditions across the Pacific that much more valuable."
How can you say this? Dragon Quest 8 is a far better game than any game Square-Enix has published in the PS2 era. Saying that you want it to fail is as counter productive to RPG's in general as saying you want Square-Enix to be purchased by EA (you would want that, wouldn't you?)
I Would say the majority of FF fans started with FF7 because it was the first PS FF, it had 3D graphics and it had a compelling storyline. It is one of the best entries in the series but I wouldn't recommend it for the "shiny" factor, not even by yesterday's standards.
There is only one way to win the average Japanese Gamer's heart and that is through an RPG. Sure, games like Dead or Alive 4 will have good sales and will motivate the average gamer to purchase a console, but it is through RPG's alone that console sales will flourish. Lacking a mascot flagship character is another fault since possibly the second biggest genre (adventure) is being represented only through Kameo.
It seems to me that a company like Square-Enix will play a very large role in deciding the 360's success oversees. If they release all of their major franchises for the 360 I can see the Xbox being a success in Japan and overall finishing with a close second place.
If however, the only title being "developed" is Final Fantasy 11, I can expect only the adventurous Japanese gamer biting the bait and another generation of Sony dominating.
I bet the super-ultra secret is that the DS can be used as a controller. The touch-screen so far seems to work as a gaming gig so why not tie in the DS with the revolution?
I'm not a huge Star Trek fan but it seems to be a universe that is not strictly combat dependant and where diplomacy might play a larger role. I would like to play as a merchant for instance, and run a lucrative trade while exploring the galaxy.
Also, I am tired of Elves and Orcs so a good Sci-Fi MMO game would be appealing.
I just hope it is not too geek heavy where I must speak fluent Klingon in order to make an impression on people.
Clearly, the solution is to do what Professor Nash would do and ignore the Ps3 then go straight for the Wii.
"As an American IT worker who spent the last 8 years with fewer than 10 days off a week, I find it hard having any sympathy for you."
Hmm, I don't know about anyone else, but I have never gotten more than 7 days off a week.

"Burglars couldn't get into your house if you had no doors or windows."
Um, if your house doesn't have windows or doors the burglars can just walk in.

Hopefully with these tools we can get what we really want, bi-yearly editions of our favorite sports titles! Madden 2007: Summer Edition. Sweet!

The only Firmware update I am interested in is the one that lets me play Snes games.

Using both hands or is one holding the flashlight?
