I'd be interested to know how widespread these sleeping disorders are.
Our next generation of software is being tested under Vista and we have a number of dedicated test machines and dual boot development machines of different vintages. None of them have any problems at all with suspend or hibernate.
Just because there is a cure it doesn't mean that the problem affects everybody... although I have had hypochondriac computers in the past;)
The bottom line is... well the bottom line in dollars.
Programming embedded CPUs and DSPs can do the same tasks cheaper than larger silicon when there is a large number of units produced, bugs can be fixed without recalls, and new features can be added.
It's better for everybody... if you can get the firmware running.
The obvious choice is ... well ... obvious, and I'm sure it would bring the sales pitch to a 'grinding' halt if you did start cranking ;)

I've been seeing this problem for years and been using Dial-A-Fix to fix it up.
This problem with repair reinstalls isn't new.
So basically Carmack & Newell agree but one is non-technical, biased and quite ill informed and the other isn't.
