    Why was this modded down? In order for a public figure to sue for libel, they have to prove that the actions we of actual malice. This differs from non-public figures. This modding is ridiculous.

    Even if his statement was only partially correct, give someone a chance to correct it.

    Ok, slashdotters complain all the time about ridiculous patens being accepted because the people in the patent office appear to be mentally incompetent. So, I ask, how can hiring better engineers be a step in any direction but the right one?

    This is a recurring problem. Society seems to think we have to solve a problem with a one dimensional attack. Why not use a socio-technical or legal-technical solution? I'm not saying I have the answers; but we should take more than one angle.

    As for the guy who thinks banning targeted ads is a bad thing. I'm sure a lot of people disagree with you. I know I do. I would much rather get ads from slashdot telling me about 6.0Mbps/768kbps DSL from Speakeasy than tampon ads from OB or someone. Besides, if you can drive down the cost of advertising, it should theoretically drive down the cost of consumer goods... if that pans out, we have yet to see for sure.

    The post puts a negative spin on the issue, and I CAN CLEARLY see why.

    However, the system might be good for finding repeat suers, which could bring down the cost of malpractice insurance and possibly lower the cost of insurance, therefore helping a great many people. That's not to say that would necessarily happen. But if insurance market (which I know little about) was competitive (price driven), it might work out for the better.

    still, I'd hate so see someone get hurt because their doctor wouldn't help them because a previous doctor took the wrong leg off.

    My highschool was all about word processing on WordPerfect (I think it was 6.x) from '94 to '99. I remember how cool all the stoners thought you were when you were able to change screen settings. Then again, they freaked out when you wrote little batch files than told them the virus they installed was deleting the hard drive and their names were being reported to the principal and inserted them into autoexec.bat.

    Ok, besides this being stupid, I distinctly remember being on the internet prior to 1999 and using URLs to access web sites and email addresses to send email.

    According to that patent page the patent was filed on November 23, 1999. As the Spanish say: Que? Seriously, who in patent office granted this patent?

    God damn it, I'm going to sleep now and hope I wake up somewhere else...

    We don't here 'aboot' YOU SAY 'aboot'. It's basic linguistics man. Take a course or something. There is not right or wrong way because a dialect is a dialect is a dialect. Besides, the differences in various phonemes between Canadian English and American English are very small. Unless you're talking to some drunk guy without a tongue (or some other strange outliers), I think you're the one with the [hearing] problem.

    I don't know if I like *this* particular use of embedded computing, but it's nice to see the technology moving along. Just wait until the technology is more useful. You know, something like a book car you can take around with you swipe by a book's tag or ISBN number that remembers to order the book for you later.
