    You are right that his education was paid for by taxes. However since not everyone in his country goes to college other people have subsidized his education through their taxes.

    Some podcasters might have their shows available on their website. But you shouldn't confuse podcasting with a website linking to mp3s.

    A podcast is a RSS feed with enclosures linking to the show. You use an aggregator to subscribe to the shows. The aggregator will automagically download the shows you subscribe to your harddrive. The aggregator will also automaticaly copy the shows over to your mp3 player (assuming you have one).

    I suppose this is due to the high cost and workload associated with making a modern game. Makes you wonder though? How long until the cost and workload of 'regular' apps strays outside the domain of open source?
    Which is more expensive to write:
    a) Prince of Persia 3D (Or whatever its name is)
    b) Microsoft Office

    I'd guess it's MS Office but I'm not sure.

    Writing a modern game with 3d models and a storyline is fundamentally different from writing a normal application. It's more like writing a novel.

    How many open source sci fi novels do you know about?

    Take the current 2.6.* kernel and create patches that remove XFS, JFS, SMP, etc. Call it the no-unicorns patchset.

    I'd imagine that most people who run linux have a uniprocessor machine and don't really care what filesystem they use.

    The administrators require more than two days traning to get up to speed on Linux.

    Mabey 4,000 is the tipping point. If you have more than 4,000 desktops you will still save money even if you have to retrain all administrators.

    I don't think the handheld would be running portage. Instead portage would be used to create "frozen" disk images for the embedded devices.

    Ok, I see your point. I find it comforting to know that we can switch kernel if we have to though.

    Besides SCO would probably sue the Hurd and BSD people anyway. :(

    If for some reason all copies of the Linux kernel source code was wiped of the face of the earth tomorrow people would still be able to run a Free/Open operating system.

    Sure there would probably be major setbacks. It might take another five years to get to the point were we are now but things would eventually get back to normal.

    So RMS's statement that the Linux kernel is no longer essential is true.

    I use Gentoo Linux and I love it. But if I _had_ to I could learn to live with a FreeBSD kernel. I know both Debian and Gentoo are working on getting there userland stuff working under a BSD kernel.

    If the Linux kernel went away tomorrow it would be a real shame (understatement of the year) but it would not be the end of the world.
