  1. Re:Developers need to do the math on Why Game Developers Should Shut Up About Used Games · · Score: 1

Uh, no. No doubt a scenario like that may exist, but that is just one tiny possible scenario. So 1 million by the game new, then a half million buy it used. If the used market wasn't there, then maybe 900k would by the game new of the initial million since they can't afford it since they won't be able to resell it. And of the 500k who bought it used, 200k buy it new...thus increasing sales by 100k.

But what I am really trying to say is making up bull shit math isn't going to prove your point (my example doesn't prove anything either). You will just be modded up by mods who lack critical thinking skills and mod based on what they agree with.

Ultimately, we don't really know. But probably more people would buy the game from the developer if they could cut out the used market. Your assumption that they think every used sale is a sale lost for them is probably not true as well. But I think it is reasonable to believe they are losing some money due to used sales. And they are losing more than they would gain from used sales existing.

I have played Eve, quit, and tried it again. I have played many other MMOs as well. So I figure my opinion is at least informed. Eve is a game that you really want to like, but is ruined by the interface and the community.

Thank you. I was going to say the same thing. As far as usability goes, Eve is probably the worst MMO out there. The GUI is overly complex and (for the most part) that is why the game has such a high learning curve. At least with WoW, you can alter your GUI in a billion ways so that it can fit even the most picky person's needs.

I think a lot of people are going to be in for a surprise when they die. If a soul even exists, it has to be separate from the brain. Your analogy doesn't work. If I smack my head, I can lose my memory. It has nothing to do with me whacking my soul too hard. Therefor, when we die, we probably won't have any memories of this life since that is all stored in the brain. If there is a soul, it is probably just an essence of us. Something completely inhuman. If you think after we die we all have our bodies and are hanging out with family and friends on clouds...I just can't see it happening. The brain has scientific, well documented the features. The soul is probably just a story or it is something beyond human comprehension.

If the soul was all that mattered, then if we smacked our head really hard and our brain was damaged, it would have no effect on our behavior. But we know that people with brain damage are severely impaired both physically and mentally. So if you can disrupt the impulses in the brain you could shut down a human. If you can control the impulses, you can control the human.

I am not saying people can't have souls, I am just saying the soul doesn't control our body.

  11. Re:More useless content? on Is Cataclysm the Next World of Warcraft Expansion? · · Score: 1

Interesting, but it strikes me as rubbish. WoW has around 11/12 million subscribers. Yeah, there is inflation which cuts in to profit, but when your profit is so ridiculously high, it doesn't really matter that you are making slightly less each year. This isn't a game that is near the breaking even point. The amount of content not being visited is not even a factor. Most people just skip the dungeons not even away of their existence. How does unused content detract from the player's experience? Those dungeons are't being tweaked or balanced still so they aren't using resources either.

If your "analysis" is telling you that World of Warcraft is in trouble in the short term, then I question the metrics you are using to analyze it. There is not a single company in the world that wouldn't want to be in Blizzard's position right now. You can talk about trends all you want, but there has never been an MMO as popular as WoW. So you can pretty much take your numbers and throw them out the window. WoW certainly has a few more years of very profitable life in it.

So what if they don't get to see the old dungeons. The new dungeons are generally better designed and more interesting. If you really want to see the old content, join a guild that occasionally runs that old content.

Your statement makes no sense. If a game doesn't have longevity, it doesn't make as much money. Yet you try to claim that expansion is good for money, but not for longevity. Expansions breath new life in to a game that has become a grind for a large number of players. The last expansion made just questing on your own really fun. That content is easily accessibly to everyone. So either you don't play or you just lack any deep insight on what is occurring.

No, not really. Unlike being gay or being born with a skin color, being fat is a choice. Most people don't want to be it, but then they don't want to take the steps to avoid it either. Not only is it less attractive, it is less healthy. So I don't think it is good as a society to encourage people to be fat (I am talking about the "big is beautiful" crowd).

Furthermore, it is as simple as burning more calories than you consume. People have trouble because they are lazy. Instead of buying healthy foods and cooking they go get fast food or go to restaurants. They pay no attention to what they eat and they get very little physical activity.

Now I am not saying you need to look like a super model, that isn't realistic. But only in rare cases is there an excuse to be overweight. Those small number of medical issues aside, people are way too fat. The number of medical issues have not gone up. The convenience of food that is bad for you has.

So stop making excuses. Find out how many calories a person of your sex/height should be consuming, eliminate fast food, exercise AT LEAST 3 days a week (the more the better), eat healthy foods (uncooked veggies, fruit, oatmeal, whole grain breads, etc). Don't diet, change your lifestyle. You will be happier and healthier because of it.

They grew up in the same environment, had the same opportunities, yet have vastly different lives. There were no bad conditions in his life to force him in to addiction. Games are fun. If you play a lot, you can get really good and people will look up to you. That feels good. But at the end of the day, it doesn't pay the bills. If you can get the kids away from the Internet, it might break the cycle. They might get over their social fears and realize that the real world is more interesting and has more meaningful rewards.

You like to pass these off as ineffective, but I bet you it actually does help a lot of people. They might enjoy the martial arts they learn and keep that up.
