Assuming that the sources of bootleg mp3s are average end users then you can assume that the initial copy would still have the watermark.
Assuming there is a cheap way to produce individualized songs for each buyer and building a Database connecting each song with a consumer... then it could well be, that music would be distributed watermarked (i.e.: too expensive for CDs). But how long until the savy would jump in, find a way to filter the watermarks and distribute the tools to the rest? Everyone would update their ripping tools and watermarks would be a one-time hit not worth the effort. People would get cautious not to rip and distribute mp3 with watermarks after 2 or 3 were convicted quilty.
but then that breaks the DMCA
If watermarking would be labeled a copy-prevention device...I guess they'd do this. This would mean that developing und using a de-watermarker would need to be done hidden... as most ripping is done right now anyways. So nothing new here.
Additionally don't forget, that DMCA only works in the USA.
and then we are in the same loopy mess we're in right now.
Agreed, but we are in a big loopy mess ever since Copyrights have been extended beyond the original aritists lifetime and re-extended and re-extended again.
But instead of searching for a viable sollution where everyone could win, RIAA is frenetically circling around their distriubtion channels, squeezing every dollar out of the system as they can.
why don't the labels digitally watermark these advances?
Ah, but this is an easy one.
Ed Felton showed that if an watermark is embeded on a file. It can be found no mater how good the watermark or how good the encryption of the content is. And as soon as the watermark is found, it can be removed or changed. Game Over. No more control over who was leaking it.
There are three types of people in the world: those who can count, and those who can't.
Ahhh, reminds me of the Monty Python sketch.
Ximinez: Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Our chief weapon is surprise... surprise and fear... fear and surprise... our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency. Our three weapons are fear and surprise and ruthless efficiency and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope... Jarring chord. They burst in Ximinez: Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms --
Well most people don't even know what a kernel is. My ex gf mixes up Windows and Word. Many People I know don't know what OS is for, and I don't know why they should.
Even though most projects are small, I guess there is still some psycological aspect when you programm and know this is going to be public and others might take a peek into it.
I guess the comment from the author of Dungeon Master Java was pretty interesting, where he released his code but warned the public "There is one big problem, though: it's UGLY.
I mean really really really really really really UGLY." So at least programmers with a conciousness might push themself a little harder writing good code, just because they feel the eventiual eyes of the public on their code.
Mozilla's main support still comes from Netscape... the Company Netscape. So even tho the Netscape Browser 6.xx is based on Mozilla, Mozilla itself is in major parts still Netscape, the company.
Star Office has been bought by Sun. Now Star Office has a price-tag on it. To give people a free version of it, they packaged Open Office. So Star Office isn't based Open Office it's the other way arround.
Computers crash all the time, granted steps can be taken to ensure redundancy, but this is nothing new.
Well for one, who said some computer crashed? From what I understood from the story. The system had a glitch after a software upgrade. So it seems the new software is at fault. That's not the same as some hardware failure. How do you fight a sysematic error in software with a redundancy? The trick with software upgrades is to do some testing in as-real-as-possible environment before going live.
This would be perfect for TCPA wouldn'it? Having a connection to the internet to update Keys and download/upload stuff before even a bootloader had a chance to do stuff on it, would be a nice thing to have to control a box, wouldn't it?
This is really a non-issue. You can packkage your java-classes with runtime environment into a nice setup.exe and then download and install all of it in one go.
This isn't about if 1Gbyte per day is alot or not. It's about an ISP who advertise flat-rate without any limits and then insert stuff in the contract like for "educational and recreational" use only, and not in excess of "normal bandwith" limits.
I mean either you sell a flat-rate without limits or you don't. It's that easy. Everything else is misleading advertising.
I'm with you there. Change is ahead. Changes make people affraid.
companies may soon get to the point where they -expect- software to be produced for free. [...]
There is a big difference between free software and to produce software for free. So for the most parts OSS is produce by people in their spare time. Still others get paid to produce OSS. Today companies sell software, tomorrow companies will give their software away and sell services.
Or if you look at it from the programmers point of view: If I would give everyone my software I produce at work, nothing would change. I'm created the stuff and know best how to put it work, how to maintain it, how to change it. If there would be someone who knows it better than me or someone who does it for less money, then its economie again.
Why would someone want a digital camera integrated in their PDA? Is there some aspect of Personal Digitial Assistance that involves photography?
Don't think of it as a PDA with a digi cam. Think of it as a cell phone with a digi cam. Here in europe phone companies made big bucks with SMS. Now they want to extend their success to MMS (Media Message System?) and cell phone producers are jumping on the bandwagon to deliver phones which are able to show and produce those MMS.
PDA's and cell phones were allready converging. Now this device seems to be more on the cell phone side, so better compare its features and uses to a cell phone.
Now, we can still argue why the heck a cell phone needs a camera. Market research has shown that pics are most often send by bluetooth instead of MMS. Seems people don't like the MMS fees and rather send their pics to friends on site.
Might be that the pr0n industry *IS* interested in the business.
Please, don't do this. English isn't my first language, but since this is an english forum I do my best and give it a try. I guess its not perfect but still ok.
But this sentence is just horrible! Never make fun of "All your base are belong to us" and then go on and write such french crap... well, unless of course you want to make ass of yourself for some foreign countries;)
It's just not reasonable to say, well, if you want to learn programming, then you must learn English first.
I don't agree on this one. English isn't my first language (it's my third) so I can't speak for Chinese people, but for europan-languages translating programming key-words doesn't make programming easier but lot harder. Same goes for naming computer parts btw.
A second thing I'd like to add is. Did you ever gave medical- or theologie-studies a look? If you do you'd know that those studies will involve learing (at least the basics) of foreign languages. For medecin it will be latin and for theologie it will be hebrew and maybe latin too. You will only learn some of the basics but you will none the less learn some of it. Why not english-basics for computer sience?
If people want to switch from Windows, they're not going to do it because it costs less.
Maybe you wouldn't. But many will. If people can do the same stuff for less money, then I know a bunch of people who would switch. But Linux is still not there, but it is going to be. I guess the real Killer application for Linux will be the OEM Sellers. A very cheap machine which will be able to do 99% of the stuff 99% of the peopel need to do. A machine where the MS-tax would be too much.
Thats not the point. The danger is they'll resort to LAWS that hand out outrageous sentences to stop you even thinking about it.
How about five years in prison for propsing/implementing a copying/p2p technology? Or the threat of a huge $100000 fine?
Americans got the death-sentence, right? UK Police-men don't even wear fire-arms. How does the crime-statistics compare between the US and UK? One would think that US would be better of. But they don't.
The Problem is, punishment doesn't matter for the real criminals. It might deviate those how aren't sure if they want to comit one or not. But most criminals either don't think about the punishmet involed or think they won't get caught on thus will be left unpunished.
I think, what is true for criminals will also be true for civil disobeyant people.
You know, my coworker knows a lot about the good old times. They used those brand new Mainfraims. Everything just worked. But nowadays everyone uses those strange PC's. Nothing works anymore. He wishes everthing was like in the old days.
I can understand, that people liked how it used to be. But time is allways moveing forward. Plus, people tend to forget bad stuff faster than the good things. This makes for a skewed memory of past things. That's why I'm a little skeptical about the good-old-time stories.

My OpenOffice 1.0.2 had no problem with the document. So my need of uproar did dimish :P

Just a thought

Does it mean that Linux docs are *literaly* going to be written in sanskrit?!?
Is this how a democracy is supposed to work?

I've never had to click "save" on my palm pilot. To undo a change you simply click "undo". 'Nuf said.
I guess, development teams producing software on time are rare.
Wait a minit...
...would we be able to save the poor server by slashdoting it and thus disabling the counter?
How do you know?
