In fact, many programmers will probably "give away the razor and charge for the blades" by creating software frameworks then charging reasonable fees for custom enhancements as users desire them.

Examples: Fluendo, Canonical, and Imendio. They're all pretty new companies, so while we may not know how sound the business model is, we'll know soon.

You've paid for the DVD. You've paid for the DVD drive. Yet for some reason you have a desire to pay extra to use those two things together. Chances are you've probably already paid extra to use the two together, but you only have the Windows software to do so since most retail DVD drives and new computers come with a DVD decoder. Don't beg the MPAA to make you pay again.

One common "literacy test" was to require the black would-be voter to recite the entire U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence from memory."

Most Debian packages work in Ubuntu. For instance, many people have successfully used the Debian mplayer packages from an unofficial mirror on Ubuntu. The reason why they suggest not mixing Debian packages into an Ubuntu install is because the versioning may be different and apt can get confused. Most Debian packages are present in the universe section of the Ubuntu repository, so it's not that big of a deal.

They get it home, and then they realize that they have to jump through hoops to play this game or open this document from work.

If anything , they'd be surprised than they can open their work documents without having to install any extra software, as most Linux distros come with an office suite, unlike Windows. I'm sure that most people know that if they bought a Mac some of their old programs might not work. Why wouldn't they consider this with Linux? I never thought I'd ever say this, but I think you underestimate the knowledge of the general population.

Even if they didn't agree with the law (I didn't read the justices' opinions on the case so I'm not sure), it's constitutional. Legislators are supposed to be the ones writing laws that represent their constituents. That's the weak link in the chain you should be focusing on.
