Don't know if it's where you read it, but Asimov's The Robots of Dawn and Robots and Empire deal with pretty much that exact situation.

  5. Re:Riddle on Your Favorite Math/Logic Riddles? · · Score: 1

Sorry, but it's your logic that's flawed. Let's work out the possibilities.

There are six (3!) ways the goats and cars could be placed behind the doors. They are:

    D1 D2 D3
    -------------------
    1 2 CAR
    1 CAR 2
    2 1 CAR
    2 CAR 1
    CAR 1 2
    CAR 2 1

I won't work through each possibility, but note that since we're switching, and one goat is removed after our initial pick, if we pick a goat first we'll switch to a car, and vice versa. Since there's a 2/3 chance of a goat being behind any particular door, we have a 2/3 chance of initially picking a goat. The other goat is then removed, and we then switch to the car. Hence, if we switch we have a 2/3 chance of winning.

What you're forgetting is that making a basketball shot is not just a matter of probability. When a player is feeling confident in their shot, as they will when they're on a roll, they worry less about things that could go wrong, and thus muscle memory plays a greater part in their shooting motion, leading to more consistant results and a continued streak. Obviously statistical clustering plays a part, but it's not entirely random.

Contrast this to events such as rolling dice, where (barring cheating) players don't have any predictable control over the results. Players will also feel like they're on a roll (no pun intended) when playing dice, but unlike basketball their mental confidence or lack thereof plays no part in the results of the next throw, and thus the streak is purely a statistical phenomenon.

That would have been a neat trick, since Live came out about a year after Halo was released. Bungie wanted to incorperate support, but Live wasn't sufficiently developed to allow them to do so, and since Halo was the star launch title there was no way Microsoft would let them push back the release date six months or more.

... in the linked thread. I can that going either way; it could be true, or it could just be CMA. I have a hard time thinking they'd put gungans in there, though. With the widespread hatred (or at least distaste) for episode 1 and Jar Jar in particular, it seems like a player who picked them would be asking for trouble. Then again, I don't actually play SWG, so take that as the expert thought that it is (not).

Simple. If you're running Safari, you must be running OS X. OS X isn't even supported on your pre-G3 machine, so you're lucky it runs at all. If you were actually using an OS that was meant to be run on that hardware (like os 9, or maybe even 8.x), your computer would be running fine. People who like the Mac tend to have machines that are designed to support their OS of choice, unlike yourself. I'd flame you for that, except it's probably not your computer, and thus not your fault. At least use a decent mac/OS combination next time before you start bashing them, Mkay?
