Pshaw, google fanboy/stockholder. Google is the crook here. As a former journalist, I whole heartedly agree with ZDNet's message, and wish I had written it myself.
2) Google isn't banning news.com or anyone else from talking about Google, or using Google. They are just saying that they pissed them off, so they aren't going to talk to them. Why shouldn't they be allowed to decide some reporters piss off their chief executive, and they are going to ignore them? Does the press have some right to get all their questions answered by whoever they like?
But publicly decrying Cnet news they're setting a precedent. They're saying, write something we don't like, and we'll stop talking to you. For a company and a CEO, that's a *pretty* childish thing to say, and quite a stupid thing for a company to do. I love ZDnet's sarcastic take on this. Google should be ashamed.
You're right of course, but in my experience, a game sequel tend to be better than the original. However, it's as easy enough to list up absolute stinkers as it is to list up good sequels (think Star Control 3, that new U.F.O. game, that Civilization 2 spinoff (the one Activision made -- can't remember the name), Manhunter 2 (but then, Manhunter 1 was a pretty bad game, although novel for its time), Monkey Island 3-5 (ok, so they were all right, but nothing like their predecessors), the Tomb Raider series, the last Heroes of Might and Magic (man, I can't believe how they screwed up this one...) etc.
While OGG is a very nice format, I personally prefer the FLAC format, which incidentally also seems to be on the rise (no statistics to support this, but I've noticed more and more torrents where the music is encoded with FLAC).:)
Wrong. While this is true for most movie sequels, it's absolutely untrue for games. Most game sequels tend to improve on the original. Compare the original Lemmings to Lemmings 2, Popolous vs Popolous 2, GTA 3 vs. GTA Vice City, Max Payne vs. Max Payne 2, Doom 1 vs Doom 2 - the sequels were in all cases better than the original.

A few years ago, practically everyone I knew used Alta Vista for search. Now, I don't know anyone who uses it. You could have made the same argument vice verca Alta Vista a few years back, and as a business man, you'd be out of money today.
Third, I've seen a lot of mention about the whole HD-DVD thing in this thread. Now console players are usually not as tech savvy as say a PC gamer. They don't have to be. Out of idle curiosity I asked my friend who is a major console gamer what he thought of Microsoft decision to not include an HD-DVD drive with the 360. He just sort of looked at me blankly, he had no fucking clue what it was. So will this hurt Microsoft in the slightest? Possibly if the media screams about them not having HD-DVD, but more than likely, no. I personally feel that an HD-DVD isn't even needed for the next-gen consoles, but hey, everyone can have an opinion eh?
I think you're absolutely right.
Another factor to consider is the ability to mod the console and subsequently play game backups. Ok, I know this is frowned upon, to say the least, but what would you buy? A console you can use with copied DVDs (which are getting pretty cheap now), or a console you can't do that with. Look at the Gamecube vs. PS2 and Xbox. I'm sure a lot of the people owning PS2 and Xbox bought those instead of the Gamecube because it was easy to mod and copy games for, compared to the Gamecube with its proprietary minidisc format.
What an odd mentality. Are you even aware that Yahoo has arguably better (and popular) international services and websites than Google? It is no more American centric then Google.
Take a look at the norwegian Yahoo, and tell me if you think it's any good (www.yahoo.no).
You know, the people who prefer one Linux distro over another have reasons for having that opinion. The only reason that supports your 'principles' seems to be an uninformed idea that Yahoo is more American centric then Google.
You're giving Linux users too much credit.;)
My principle is simply to not use sites I do not care for. It's not uninformed, just biased to my particular point of view. Anyway, who cares if I like Yahoo or not? Certainly not Yahoo.
But if you really want a few good reasons, here they are:
* Yahoo had a nice localized portal in Norwegian. They shut it down, shoved all localised contents out the window, and ignored feedback from its users. Yes, I did use yahoo.no a few years back. No, I did not have any user content on its site, except for a home site I've long since shut down.
* Second rate search results. I rarely got good results when I used Yahoo. Maybe they're better now (I haven't used them since Google came along).
No particular reason, I just don't like Yahoo, much in the same way that many people don't like Mandrake/Mandriva and instead prefer Gentoo (or whatever). (I use Mandrake.)
I should add that I'm not American, so the american centric view of Yahoo doesn't really jive with me. I guess that's part of the reason why I neither use it or like it.:)
Ok. I see. It makes more sense now - I suppose Yahoo gets a cut for each song purchased from these sites.
But illegal download? I'm not doing anything illegal when I search for mp3's with Google. At best, the linked site might not have the rights to distribute the file, but that's a different thing altogether.
Google lets you use the following query: "springsteen filetype:mp3" to search for mp3 files with springsteen in the file name. I don't use Yahoo on principle, so I haven't seen how it works and whether it's better than Google in any way.
Why do I get the feeling Slashdot's main business now is funneling traffic to 5-10 sites, including that Roland guy, 1up.com, and John C. Dvorak?
Slashdot f**ing sucks nowadays. I'm gradually drifting towards sites like Kuro5hin and Ars Technica, but I'd like to see some even better alternatives than these.
Yes, King's Quest was a lot of fun (and the series kept improving until about KQ7, which was too cartoony and boring for most people, and KQ8, which was an FPS/adevnture hybrid that didn't really work). Most of the games Sierra produced were a lot of fun (with the exception of stuff like Manhunter and their action line). You obviously didn't like them, but that's really just you.
The teaser trailer seems to say that the discovery the of last 10 percent of the human genome is what makes the creatures into what they are. No mention of hell or portals at all. Hmmf.
So true, unfortunately. Every disaster movie the last few years has followed this formula (that one about the hurricane (I think the name was Twister), that one about the volcano with james bond in the lead, Independence Day... This is also why I don't think I'll bother with the new War of the Worlds movie (that, and Tom Cruise).
The real question is what was Rockstar doing wasting their time making a lame minigame depicting simulated sex between fully clothed people? I would've expected more from them, frankly.
They probably just made it to see how it would work, then decided they couldn't get away with it and removed game path that led to this event. In light of the recent debacle, maybe they should have removed it altogether, but who would have there would be so much fuss about it? To top it off, it's a pretty innocent thing. It's just a one minute segment with a guy with his pants still on having sex with a naked girl. It's pretty boring stuff.
Too bad you posted as an AC, because this was en excellent comment!
Because I would still write things about you, and all one would hear from your side of the story was "no comment".

I definitely agree with you there. Google may have something going on, but they're horribly over priced.

Yeah, and at times all that was shown was Slashdots inane "you have accessed the rss feed too often". ;)

Which is a crappy newspaper.

That's an odd way of describing a new server OS from Microsoft. ;)

Sierra also had a very distinct fat alien stereotype: Sludge Vohaul.
There's also Chuck Rock if you want to delve back into other forgotten characters.
In Scandinavia, you can buy HL2 for ~25$, retail. Apple. phft. They can do whatever they want, and everyone will think it's a fair deal... :(

Still, it doesn't look half bad.
The site seems broken, but this link worked for me: http://streamingmovies.ign.com/filmforce/article/

Well put. I can't believe how incredibly crappy Day After Tomorrow was. It was without a doubt the biggest turkey of 2004.
