  1. Bring back the adventures! on Concepts That Should Be Games? · · Score: 1

I read in the Time issue that featured the Xbox360 on the cover that the Xbox team was gearing up to produce experimental games that would have appeal beyond the current market of shooters and sports games, especially since they want to bring in the female buyers. Well, when Sierra still produced adventures, they brought in women players en masse, at least according to Sierra's then manager, Ken Williams. Why not bring them back? I'm sure if done right, they'd be a big success. Microsoft owns the rights to Tex Murphy, so that might be a start. :)

  4. Re:Moore's Law on Smoke and Mirrors from Sony and Microsoft · · Score: 1

It all depends on the will and ability of the manufacturers. Both PS3 and Xbox are relatively weak when it comes to hardware, and they were so at the time of release. Going by spec (as I've no idea how these consoles will actually be like when they finally arrive), they certainly seem a lot more powerful than the current gen. I'm positive Sony contemplated a lot less powerful PS3 before Microsofts Xbox became reality. Moores law doesn't really apply here, since a consoles spec has nothing to do with the premise of the law.

This is the first time in quite a while that *I* am excited about a new console. Ever since the Playstation arrived with its frankly unimpressive specs we've been stuck with a bunch of consoles that have been restricted by the consoles poor hardware. For the first time we'll get consoles that are more powerful than your average PC, and with enough RAM to boot. Yes, the games may not break new ground genre wise, but it's a huge step forward never the less.

But this is just Lucas bashing. The love scenes was, IMHO, done very well in the prequel movies. They felt awkward and realistic, rather than the usual Hollywood bliss you usually get.

Love this news if it's true. Some slashdotters may not have liked the prequel, but I certainly did :)

So? There has never been any movies that have been sold out in Oslo two days after the premiere, at least not in the last decade. You have to remember that there are so many cinemas in Oslo (including Sandvika, Asker and Drammen) that there won't be a shortage of tickets as long as most of them show the same movie. I bought a premiere ticket to Phantom Menace on Sandvika kino on the day of the premiere. I saw people lined up outside the cinema before I went to work that morning, but there were still tickets available when I got home after work that evening. And that was *before* everybody thought Phantom Menace stunk .

The thing is that you can stop the action any time to assign tasks to the lemmings (you could do that on the Amiga too, but with a mouse it's really no need).

I agree it would be fun to see it on the DS as well. If there ever was a game well suited for a stylus, this is it.

Hmf, this severely restricts the usefulness of MSN's desktop search. I do prefer this interface over Googles, but if you're not getting the location of the query, it's not all that great. I'll keep using Ultraedit's "search in files" a while yet, I guess...

Maybe I haven't played around with it enough yet, but unfortunately, the MS tool doesn't seem to be capable of showing me where in the file it found my search term! It shows me a list of files it thinks are relevant, with lovely little stars indicating the level of relevance, but it doesn't show me where in the (potentially large) file, the term I searched for appears. Dumb, dumb, dumb.
It's very easy to see where the file is located. You see, you can scroll the output window to the right and see all sorts of details, including the name of the file and its folder. I know the idea of scrolling the contents of a window may seem like an abstract concept, but I'm sure you'll get used to it quickly.

By the way, Microsoft's search is able to index network drives as well as local drives, which is a big bonus compared to Google's desktop search (which won't do this. You can edit the registry, but this doesn't really work all that well).

So is there a good reason for 90% of people to care about backward compatibility?
I rarely ever play PS1 games on my PS2, but that's because IMHO there are so few good PS1 games. The Xbox has quite a few good games that I could see myself playing some time down the road, so it's good if I don't have to keep both Xboxes plugged in (or at hand) at all times. 'Course, my xbox is modded and I use it for media playback all the time, so it's unlikely I'll part with it until the Xbox2 can be modded :).

Nintendo is another good example. The Nintendo DS and the Gameboy Advance can load just about every game cartridge produced for the Nintendo gameboy line, and I really like that. You get a better playing experience on the Gameboy Advance SP than on the non backlit Gameboy/Gameboy color and you don't need to keep the old handhelds around (though I still do it, for nostalgia's sake).

So, yeah, I think there are several good reasons for backwards compatibility. :)
