Oh... I suppose I should back up what ive said... um ok.

First off, the GPU in the Xbox 360 would probrably cost about the same retail as the PS3 GPU would, infact probrably more due to that 12MB of static, highly expensive framebuffer memory and the silicon that goes into almost free post pixel effects ( like 4x AA ).

As to money losing business, read Microsofts latest quarterly earnings statement... they expect to be cash positive on the 360 business within a year or so. I cant imagine Sony is anywhere close to that number this generation.

As to a huge leap over the Xbox 360, then why is it gaming media is pretty much united in slaming the PS3 right now for not showing any great superiority. Infact, any game they have shown as playable as been pretty much acknowledged as being doable on the 360.

Point blank, Sony stumbled and fell at E3 this year ( like microsoft did last year ). The only people that dont seem to notice that are Microsoft, er Micro$oft bashers and Sony fanboys. Which of the two are you? Maybe both?

They need to convince people to buy the new product and thus keep their purse lined with gold, or their business model fails.

In the embeded market there is no such presure. For the most part, people dont "upgrade" devices like the do computers. Point blank Microsoft needs to convince millions of people with the mindset of "Xp is good enough" that XP isnt good enough, while at the same time convincing them that the alternatives arent any better. Not a place I would like to be personally... but then they did it with 2K users going to XP, so dont be shocked if they do it again.

You make it sound like one division at Microsoft gains because another division loses. This is just a silly way to view things. Its not like Microsoft is delaying Vista because they have over allocated resources to the CE group.

How about this for a reality check view of things. First of, Microsoft has 90%+ of the desktop OS market, but maybe 1/3 of the portable market, with 1/3 stretching things huge. Where would you allocate your resources to? Secondly, which do you think would be easier to make... a consumer OS for an unlimited variety of hardware and 20 years of legacy to support? Or, an embedded OS with very little legacy support and a much lower level of hardware requirements?

The thing im wondering is how much does CE 6 have to do with Microsofts push to having gaming across all platforms. Is CE6 purely CE5 with better gaming/.Net support?

As to Sony/Microsoft bringing nothing new to the table, I will give you that with Sony, but im guessing your just being jaded against Microsoft. Live is a pretty amazing service if you have ever actually used it. On top of that Live Arcade has been brilliant and with the slew of new games ( yay Lumines! I can now sell my PSP, POS that it was!!! ) coming to Arcade, its looking even better.

So far as a "normal" non disruptive console goes, the 360 has brought alot to the table. Lose your blind M$ hatred and you will come to see that. Hell even the standard definition/high definition all in one cable is pretty brilliant, as is the media center-esque functionality thats built into it. I frankly never thought I would use it ( I never used my PS2 or XBox as a DVD player after all ), I find myself streaming my MP3 collection to my 360 all the time, either as a game soundtrack or just to interface with my stereo. Also, im seeing a cubic assload of stupidity in these Slashdot posts. People are claiming in one sentence that Wii is a brilliant name because of how much press it is getting. Then in the second sentence they say Nintendo isnt going for the hardcore crowd, but the casual gamer market... anyone else see the stupidity here? The press they are getting is *IN* the hardcore crowd. The mainstream world doesnt know nor care jackshit about Wii sofar. The only non-gamer conversations I have had about the name started by me ( they hadnt heard of Wii ), and the response was either that the name was juvenille or asked me how the hell you say it. Funny thing is, the Xbox 360 is also getting a huge amount of press on slashdot, most of it negative. So, does the "all press is good press" therefore think that the XBox 360's marketing strategy is brilliant too?

Neither is a good reaction. Point blank, on almost every level, Wii is a bad name. Its a shame too as from the clean look of the prototype I thought Nintendo was finally shedding its "toy" image. Then they turn around and give it a name that you would figure was aimed exlcusively at the under 10 crowd, which is exactly what I thought they were trying *NOT* to do.

Frankly though, I was hesitant to even bother posting this to slashdot. Lately anything but glowing praise for Nintendo, gets you labeled as a Sony or MS er... I mean $ony or M$ fanboy.

Point blank they would be overshadowed by the two other consoles. Even video of the next Final Fantasy or Gran Tourismo would have an extremely hard time getting any press coverage.

Frankly, Microsoft doesnt have many cards to play because its already launched. Plus, the show stealers at E3 tend to be either marquis games like Halo, Final Fantasy, Zelda but more often its new titles that really WOW the press. The gaming press spend page after page talking about how wonderful these newly announced games are going to be. Think back to last year and one of the show stealers was the newly announced Gears of War. That game got alot of print space.

So really all Microsoft can do to really get the attention of the media is reveal a boatload of new games nobody has ever heard off. Plus, if the rumoured 100$ HDDVD player ends up being true, that would get alot of attention aswell. The only remaining card I can see them playing is either to announce some amazing new ability to Live ( say VOIP phone calls, but I doubt that ) or to announce that Live is now free. I think if Nintendo keeps putting so much focus on the controller, game devs are going to come at it the wrong way. Do you read what he *actually* said??? He isnt slamming the Revolution in the slightest. He said I don't think a controller should have that much influence on the enjoyment of games.

Bold added by me. His point I actually agree with 100%. A game should NOT be built around the controller. A game should be built around the core game concept and make the best use of resources available. Its sorta like programming. Do you go wow, I just learned how to use objects now what should I build with them?. Of course not, well unless youre a shitty programmer ( its all part of the whole when you have a hammer everything looks like a nail mindset ).
