  5. C# on The Best First Language For a Young Programmer · · Score: 1

C# is a modern, multi-paradigm, feature-rich and evolving language. It can be most intriguing for a young programmer because you can play at various levels of abstraction (from unsafe all the way up to LINQ) and express computation in various ways (you may do a Lambda expression for one thing and a method for another). And you can use it as a scripting language, as well. Young programmers running Windows can always get Visual Studio for free via DreamSpark. Young programmers running anything else can get MonoDevelop. There really is no excuse to skip this incredibly productive language. The plus side? migrating from C# to other paradigms should be simple. And the C# user community is just as friendly as any other free language's (minus the "RTFM, N00b!" replies.)

No more. It is a great quick resource to fish for references, names, etc. From then on, one can go to traditionally refereed/edited sources. In any case, this is not much different from any reference book you may review (you usally keep going to other specialized sources), but with the big caveat that you cannot trust it more than you would an Encyclopaedia.
And yes, I am aware that some study out there claimed Wikipedia is just as accurate. I just won't buy it.

  17. Free software on Tech Jobs For a Student? · · Score: 1

Does it have to be a job? If you don't need the extra cash, you might consider exploring free software projects out there. There are many needs (and some of them require repetitive tasks). You may consider doing internationalization, documentation, and all that stuff first for a project you like. Suppose you are attracted to Wb browsing technology. Get in touch with the Firefox community! See if there are some tasks you may heko with. This will give you project skills, people skills, and what not. You will also get familiar with developing free software, and after a while you may even start playing around with code. It'l take time before you start doing some "big" tasks (there's a lot of learning to do, but then again, you're 17!), but it'll sure be fun and educational. And it'll look good in your CV if you are an active member of a community. Plus, you get the satisfaction of helping make free software even better :-)

  19. Depends on the audience on Downloadable Film Commentaries Becoming Popular? · · Score: 1

Well, I guess it depends on the audience. The "American Beauty" commentary is an excellent insight as far as cinematography is concerned. It really appeals to potential moviemakers -- you pay attention to a lot of detail. It's like a free seminar. The commentary for Ghostbusters is excellent (including shadows). You appreciate the elements of writing and how they are translated into a good movie. I wish I had a commentary track for Eyes Wide Shut with Stanley, for instance.

The argument does not hold outside of the US. Why do we, Apple users in Mexico, love Apple? We pay 50% more for their products than US customers. We get deplorable customer service. We don't have an iTunes Music Store, yet we buy iPods.
Apple SUCKS in México, their products don't. So maybe Apple users don't necessarily think of Customer Service as the main reason to have a mac. Maybe it's the RDF. Maybe we have macs because they just work.

  24. Hint, hint on Theaters Unhappy About Faster DVD Releases · · Score: 1

Release a mediocre "not for kids only" film on both media, you'll get mediocre box office and mediocre DVD sells.
The problem is not content, it's quality. Give me a good reason to spend my money on your entertainment proposal. I'll do it. I'll buy the Holy Trilogy in three different formats... but not the Old Testament Trilogy.
See my point? Focus on quality entertainment. going to the movies used to be magical because of the stories they told... now, it's just an activity for a rainy day.
