  2. Not suprising. on Analysis of .NET Use in Longhorn and Vista · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is not surprising. Performance-sensitive applications (just as the shell, explorer or whatever they call it) would suffer from not being built with optimised, native code. Just remember the OS X Finder (pre-10.2). It was not multi-threaded and made using the UI practically impossible.

  3. Now, that's a theory on Is Apple Looking to Buy Disney? · · Score: 1
    Well, it does seem unlikely.

    Apple's business 1: Computers
Apple's business 2: Digital content (music, video)

Buying Disney gets them a lot of other goodies and seems compatible with their second business line. On these lines, they may very well consider buying Comcast, too.

However... would you really risk your business lines by expanding to some other areas for which you have NO experience? Apple's success with the iPod and the whole online content thing was a calculated risk. They had the tools and the talent. Producing "Mickey Mouse's runaway iPod" shorts... unlikely. True, Jobs CEO'd Pixar, but let's not forget Pixar's success is linked to Lasseter's talent, not Jobs'.

Apple is good at what they do, and they succeeded at entering a new, closely-related business line. That doesn't mean they can jump into anything. It seems as unlikely as Apple buying Gap, just because Jobs served on the board.

He was interim CEO for a couple years, and kept the "iCEO" title later just for fun. The $1.00 salary story is true, and he was quoted saying that Apple needed to make better use of its money at the time. What he did get was more stock options.

That was a good point. I know Microsoft is using formal methods as part of their SLAM project to test software, I wonder if Apple is doing something along these lines. Formal methods have proved to be a fantastic resource for producing logically-sound software (e.g., no unescapable while loops). It would be interesting to know if other companies are conducting similar efforts.

And for the record, I'm writing this from my iBook. I'm a happy Mac user and a long-time UNIX user, but that does not keep me from recognising value in Microsoft's efforts towards improving their products.

Does this mean we will be able to run Mac OS X on * any * white box we can come up with, as long as it meets requirements? This, to me, means Apple is on the run to become a software company (which I think is great). I have been a Mac user because of their fantastic environment, not because of the hardware. If I had been given the option of buying an Intel based Mac vs. a PowerPC mac, I would have gone for the cheaper -- assuming they both have the same software.
