The fact that they are lying is really not a relevant point.

Of course it's relevant. There are these things called false advertising laws, which you apparently need to read up on. They exist to protect honest businesses, as well as consumers. None of this works, however, if you immediately sink to the level of your competition.

I'd really love to live in Texas where the PDs have a nice habit of showing up drunk and passing out in the middle of your capital murder case.

Actually, we don't even have public defenders in Texas. The judge just appoints a local attorney to act as the defendant's representative. So you get a tax or divorce specialist defending you against capital murder charges. I'm not sure if they're forced to do it pro bono or if there's some minimal compensation. Either way, you end up with a lawyer that's both unqualified and unmotivated.

OS/2 itself was just barely usable on an 8 MB machine. (My first system was a 33 MHz 486SX with 8 MB which I used with OS/2 2.1.)

But you're ignoring the rest of the software stack I described. All of IBM's networking at the time was SNA, which required Communications Manager/2 (CM/2) on every PC that needed so much as a 3270 emulator. Then there's Win-OS/2, which really means a copy of DOS plus a copy of Windows.

Now you're ready to load your application. Have fun! (My old PS/2 Model 70 literally took 15 minutes to boot every morning. It was actually pretty nice to have an excuse to sit around BSing.)

They did. It was a nightmare.

The hardware of the time was woefully underpowered for the job. A high-end desktop in the early '90s had maybe 8 MB of RAM. Try running OS/2 2.0, CM/2 (the SNA protocol stack), and Win-OS/2 (Windows 3.0 hacked to run in a DOS session). Win-OS/2 was a requirement, because the 16-bit Windows applications of the time were vastly better than their 32-bit OS/2 counterparts when the latter even existed.

  20. Second mortgages on Successful Do-Not-Call Complaints? · · Score: 1

Just a quick note from a former credit union examiner: you're incorrect.

First, second, third, etc. refer to the priority of the liens on the property. So it isn't possible to have a second mortgage without a first mortgage. Nor is is possible to have multiple second mortgages.

Home equity loans are usually second mortgages, and it is, of course, possible to take out a home equity loan on a property that is not otherwise mortgaged. In this case the home equity loan would be the first mortgage, which should be reflected in a lower interest rate.

    Wrong.

Both individuals (natural persons) and corporations (artificial persons) have rights protected by the First Amendment. Commercial speech, however, is protected less than other types of speech. This is why false advertising laws are constitutional and apply equally to corporations, sole proprietorships, and partnerships.
