I can see many companies might have issues with the security of their documents or data being held by 3rd party companies but once that hurdle has been jumped it seems to me to make sense so long as you ( the company ) can still have the same control you would were you hosting the service yourself.

Really this is just outsourcing particular aspects of your business to specialists which is something a lot of companies now have a lot of experience in.

For example the company I'm currently working for develop software for their own warehouses and distribution network because the success of this directly affects their ability to compete in the market but they also have a team of people managing their mail servers and providing support for office applications which they could certainly benefit in not doing themselves provided the alternative was cheaper and as effective.

  6. Re:Missed it. on DRM Critique Airs On National Public Radio · · Score: 1

copying a Pink Floyd album that you can buy in any Wal Mart or Target. I think the copyright is to ensure that society benefits from artists, musicians and authors work and encourages them to produce material and release it to the public.

In the case of Pink Floyd and other bands I'd say that pretending to be Pink Floyd and playing concerts of Pink Floyd music would certainly harm Pink Floyd and encourage them not to share their music that widely.

The thing is though I think copying only hurts them up to a certain level, if Pink Floyd are making money from their concerts then they're likely to continue making music regardless of whether or not their CD's are being copied and distributed without them earning any money from them. All that is likely to do is increase the number of people at their concerts and earn them more money.

As far as society is concerned the only thing we want is for artists, musicians and authors to continue to share their work with us. Luckily you don't actually need to provide much in the way of protection for people to actually create things like that but unluckily the distribution companies have managed to create an entirely uneccessary environment for their musicians to operate in.

I'm not sure but I suspect most of the energy is created from tidal currents rather than the simple height difference of the water at high and low tide so there are some areas which have much stronger currents than others based on their geography which make it far more economical to site generators where nature has naturally concetrated a lot of power than build a massive generator over a wider area to capture a similar amount of power.

  14. Re:Tides on World's Largest Wind Farm Gets Green Light · · Score: 4, Insightful

The best place to harness tidal power is in river estuaries which tend to support large eco-systems dependant on the tides.

Unfortunately I think most devices capabale of turning tidal energy into electricity tend to need to be built on a pretty large scale to worth while and this tends to totally destroy the eco systems in the immediate vicinity.

At least that is what I learned in Geograpgy lessons 15 years ago so things may have moved on since then !

I hope this really really annoys a lot of the anti nuclear crowd who campaign eternally for "alternative energy" until someone comes and builds a wind farm outside their delightful rural cottage within commuting distance of London.

Personally, at the moment, I quite like Wind Farms because they're unusual and interesting to look at but once every square metre of the countryside is covered in them I suspect this opinion might change.

I really wish our government was brave enough to invest properly in a predominantly nuclear soloution to our energy problems but I fear they will do too little and what they do do will be far too late.

In the UK mini cabs mostly have GPS ( the legal ones at least ) whilst the Black Cabs don't. In my totally unscientific studies the Black Cabs are far more effective at getting you to places than the GPS equipped mini cabs.

For example the road I live on has a name which is repeated a number of times in the City I live in in different areas but with Black Cabs I only have to say "[my road name] by the park just under the bridge" to get there with no further questions asked whereas with the mini cabs it can take them a long time to put my postcode into their machines or determine where exactly the road is to plot a route to it. Normally even having done this you have to tell them the way at every junction anyway.

  19. Re:Good job! on Adult Brains Grow From Specialist Use · · Score: 2, Interesting

In fact Black Cab drivers anywhere in the UK have to take the same test tailored to their own areas. Since London is the largest urban area in the UK the London test includes more locations and streets and is the most complex.

Mini cab drivers do not have to take the Knowledge but if you ask them they are mostly studying to pass it, this can take up to 2 or 3 years of study even whilst operating as a mini cab in that time.

Yeah, Torchwood is definitely wildly variable from one episode to the next which is a shame because it has the potential to be great if they had some kind of over-arching plot linking the episodes together, the problem seems to be that largely they don't except for Captain Jack to keep mentioning everything is about to change and some references to a recent war with the Cybermen in London which appears to have passed the rest of Wales by completely.

At the moment all that happens each week is either a new alien artifact/creature is discovered and extremely simply neutralised in the case of creatures or realised to be too dangerous for human use in the case of artifacts or random people in Cardiff die through some extremely tenuous connection with aliens.

I realise they are probably going for a large audience ( i.e. nothing too complicated or interesting ) but I think they really need some direction with the series which might help you engage with the Torchwood team and put them under some real stress. The episode with the Cyberlady could have been great but in the end was just a bit silly.
