    Ah, I love people that try to tell me what OS to use.

    Sure, sure. Linux is superior. I'm egotistical because I decided to install FreeBSD on my desktop rather than Linux. But man, the satisfaction out of so easily being able to piss you off just by using an OS that you don't like. Man, that shit is priceless.

    The major problem I have with Gentoo on a server is that it's too dynamic. I mean, upgrading to new versions of software packages when you don't need new features or security updates is just asking for trouble.

    Look man, I love system administration as much as the next guy, but on a production machine you really don't want to risk anything breaking. Bleeding edge isn't exactly the way to go.

    Devin has never in my experience, been anything than nice.

    Chances are, if you don't understand the technical stuff at Dragonflybsd.org, then it probably isn't for you. This isn't an insult, just a fact.

    Anyhow, I don't understand why so many of you people want to be walked through this. I do think it's hilarious that when a person fails to hold your hand you claim he's an elitest, or hot headed. No, he's neither. He just has more important things to do with his time than tutor/babysit you. heh.

    Any size comparison here isn't going to be fair. Linux kernels are bzipped, FreeBSD kernels are not.

    Therefore the actual end size says nothing about the kernel itself, and everything about the method used to package it.

    I do not believe any company with any REAL assets will want this. Open Source is the work of the people, the people are the revenue source for the corporations. Do not bite the hand that feeds you.

    The only reason SCO is doing it is because their products suck.

    Linux 2.6 does not obliterate FreeBSD.

    The last benchmarks I saw (Linux 2.6 vrs. FreeBSD 5.x) proved them to be simular performance wise.

    Stop mischaracterizing the parent posters argument. Their argument was that Linux isn't a complete OS, not that Mandrake or Slackware isn't.

    Personally, I'm pro FreeBSD, for reasons that are my own. You can cry and whine about it all you want, but if you are to critize my OS choice at least use facts.

    I can think of one good reason.

    On OpenBSD, apache and perl are part of the base system. bzip2 is not.

    On FreeBSD, bzip2 is part of the base system. Apache and perl are not.

    There are probably more examples.

    Ok. So just how far back does one have to have been a Linux user to graduate from n00b in your wierd world? Got my first working install back in 1993 with Yggdrasil's LGX distro, how about you? In the future please be careful when starting these petty dick size contests, eventually you get embarassed. :)


    Your insult bears the requirement that I deemed myself to be anything. I didn't. If I had started a `dick size' contest I would have told you how long I've been using *nix, however it was you that initated that.

    Since you must know, I've been using *nix since 2001, but in relation to you being a n00b that is quite irrelevant.

    Fedora is a continual series of .0 releases, pretty eyecandy not withstanding. That eyecandy is being tested for stable release in RHEL, not to make FC a n00b distro. Everything is bleeding edge releases in Fedora, a receipe for disaster when handed to a n00b. I kinda like it, but I certainly wouldn't install it for a new user and I wouldn't dream of putting it into production use.
    n00b friendly = easy to use. I think it's fairly safe to say that in relation to new users, Linux has always been a receipe for disaster.

    Not that it's a bad thing, but I don't know many people who didn't break something when they first started using *nix.
